Wimbledon Mens Final - Where it ends all
First topic message reminder :
Awesome match and a fitting climax for a tournament full of upsets, its Wimbledon Final come Sunday and it will be contested by 7 time Champion Roger Federer and the No.1 Seed Novak Djokovic.
Federer
Key Strengths - Experience , Grass court movements, Serve and finally anticipation.
A-Game - Serve, volley, aggression, grass court movements, big forehands [all], backhand slices, topspins and flatout shots DTL and experience in handling points and holding nerves.
Weakness - Lack of Stamina to play a longer 5 set game [compared to his prime], Mid match focus lapse, Loops balls on backhands, slow 2nd servers [off late a big problem].
Crowd Support - Big time on, will be undoubtedly the crowd favorite , 80-20 should be expected.
Historical Achievement - First ever Men's Champion of all time [Yes all time] to win 8 Wimbledon titles. 18 Grand Slams.
Djokovic
Key Strengths - Return, movement, stamina, Backhand [all], Big points play.
A-Game - Backhand [all], Forehand [all], Super Serbian Serves, Rebound Aces [Returns], Pace Variance [Slow and Fast Mix], passing shots, lobs, slices, top spins, volleys, drop shots.
Weakness - Grass court movements, lack of confidence, mid match focus lapse pressure to perform and Lack of Crowd Support
Crowd Support - Generally loves to play against the crowd, it won't be different tomorrow, 20% plus support should be expected.
Historical Achievement - Multiple Wimbledon Winner, World No. Status
H2H
In General - Federer 16-14
@Wimbledon - Federer 1-0
@GS Finals - Federer 1-0
@GS - Federer 6-5
@All Finals Djoko 5-4
Wimbledon 2014 Stats
Djoko vs Fed
Aces - 73 vs 69
DF - 9 vs 5
1st Serve in 68 vs 66
Server Broken 8 vs 1
Service Held - 93% vs 98%
Forehand Winners 53 vs 56
Backhand Winner 55 vs 31
Time on Court 15:09 vs 10:16
Prediction: Djoko is more or less determined and I guess destined to win his 2nd Wimbledon given his age , stamina and experienced coach Becker.

I think Federer needed this first set mentally than Novak. Remember the AO final of 2013. Novak lost it on a t/b but won the final and never got broken so the guy is superhuman and a fantastic match player and even better coming from behind.
Well Djokovic's reaction supports what you're saying but my thinking is that Djokovic has had alot of disappointment since then that has to play on his mind particularly if he doesn't get something to show for his efforts

He hasn't seen much yet. Djokovic is serving very well to be fair and I don't think he'll keep it up. Just as in the semi

Djokovic has to stem the tide of all these big losses at the business end of the grandslams. It's chipping away at the legacy of a super consistent monster that should be winning more grandslams. I'd like him to finally break his bad run here.

How tough is Djokovic now mentally? Time was that even going two sets to love down wouldn't result in you counting him out. But now?

No, he certainly is not out of this match. I would give him this set because Federer's level has dropped now and he is down a break and to recover that break is not going to happen as Novak is just too consistent.

Federer always had weapons but it was never what he was about. What made him devastate was how he would string them all together. He's all about his weapons now. It can be effective but it's also predictable

Re: Wimbledon Mens Final - Where it ends all
Fabulous comeback by Novak so far, but Fed is letting him get away with it.
Federer should start chipping an approach to the Djokovic backhand - Novak usually puts it up rather than attempt a pass off a slice, and Fed is excellent under the high ball. Just one tactic he could try to mix it up, but he needs to do something.

It doesn't look like either Federer's backhand or forehand is quite good enough. At least one surely has to be at best level to win. Neither looks clean and powerful enough at the moment.

Re: Wimbledon Mens Final - Where it ends all
From a Federer perspective he needs to improve his first serves in and not get into these backhand exchanges which he is losing.
Novak doesn't have to do anything here. Just hanging around is all he needs to do because Federer is more prone to let downs than Novak.

On one hand, Fed can be happy it is 1-1 even though Nole has looked the better player so far. On the other hand, he will need to find a way to get into Nole's service games. Maybe return a bit more aggressively.

I wonder if Fed needs to throw in some attacking flat DTL backhands occassionally and also try to be more agressive with flat forehands when he gets the chance/

Yes. Federer allows himself to go walkabout mentally after a set sometimes. Too many errors from Federer and he cant afford that as he isnt getting much play on Novaks serves as Novak is either throwing in an ace or an unreturnable serve

If it's close though, Novak has found a myriad of ways to lose GS finals in the last 18 months

Re: Wimbledon Mens Final - Where it ends all
I agree. Getting into long baseline rallies cannot be good for him in more ways then one. I think he should try to be more aggressive (not too much more, mind you), accepting that he will miss some.Henman Bill wrote:I wonder if Fed needs to throw in some attacking flat DTL backhands occassionally and also try to be more agressive with flat forehands when he gets the chance/

Apart from the odd couple of okay serves Roger isnt making things happen whereas Novak is. At 40-0 up Roger relaxes and before u know it its 40-30. Novak is going for everything unlike Fed

I just want a Roger win. It would really bookend the Fedal era for them each to hold a slam record outright.

Federer needs to start making it happen on the Djokovic serve. The Djokovic service games are whizzing by.

Re: Wimbledon Mens Final - Where it ends all
If it goes to a TB I think it would only be fair for Djokovic to win it. Unless Federer wins it 7-1 or something, in which case fair enough, it would be harsh for Djokovic to go 2-1 down after losing two tight tiebreaks having been arguably the better player in the match (seems to have won more points).

Why is it in the crucial stages Fed's serve goes to pieces? Is it pressure?
