AP Salary Cap changes
(Stolen from Old 606)
Changes to the AP salary cap have been announced:
http://www.espnscrum.com/premiership-2010-11/rugby/story/140449.html?CMP=OTC-RSS
Essentially, after the next season, one salary will be "free", allowing a marquee signing or retention of a top player.
This coming season there will be a £30k boost to the cap for each player on RWC duty (regardless of nationality).
The following season, there will be a small increase in the cap, still maintaining the current boost for up to 8 ex-academy players.

What's the bets the 'free' salary all goes on marquees and none on retention?

I hope you're wrong. Given where most of the marquees are likely to hail from ...
But I fear you're right.

Re: AP Salary Cap changes
Think there's some sensible movement in these changes:
* £30k per senior squad player that's come thru your academy system up to a max of 8 (or £240k) - should encourage the development of academies;
* £250k increase in the salary cap for 12-13 and also 13/14 up to £4.5m - moving towards what is available in France and to the top Irish and Welsh teams
* one player to be excluded from the salary cap - I share Glas' fears that this will be used for overseas marquee signings, and would expect to see this provision added to over the coming years

As, there was a suggestion in the NRL a few years back that 1 player who'd played for the club for 5 years plus could be excluded from the cap, in order to encourage clubs to reward loyal stars. They didn't bring it in though. The player-go-round in the modern NRL is phenomenal (most clubs pay up to their salary cap, so players virtually have to move to get a payrise)
