I'm going to go higher still for the number of sixes and say 680.
Far greater emphasis on six hitting now than ever before plus some smaller boundaries. Incredible to remember that the wooden fence between spectators and the outfield sometimes used to be the boundary marker - I recall John Snow damaging his hand on the fence when going for a catch in a Test in Australia in the '70/71 Ashes.

I've cleverly looked at all the recent ODI's in the tri-series and the NZ vs SL/Pak matches, calculated the number of sixes hit, worked out the average number of sixes per game and then plucked a number out of thin air.

Wow - 680! Presumably based on assumption that Jason Roy will get a late call up for England?

Not to late to enter Corporal (or anyone else). Cut off date is the day before the tournament starts. Will update the OP tomorrow and have a roll call of those who need to add a tiebreaker prediction

Ok, all updated. Bit of a roll call for Duty, Liverb and Mad for Chelsea to add their sixes prediction.
I am quite busy today and over the weekend, but will pick up and update early next week. There is still a week to get entries in for anyone else who fancies playing!

I heard Jason Roy speak at a members' forum at the Oval circa 2011 when Surrey were playing Leics in a CC match. Jimmy Taylor was playing for the visitors then and was starting to be spoken of as the great hope of English cricket. Roy voiced his own admiration of Taylor and expressed the hope that he might bat with him for England one day. We can dream, eh JD?

Totally agree, but first you have to engage your brain before enthusiasm gets the better of you. Calm down and think "Where did I see this before" and then as the gears in your skull mash and grind, the answer comes "Ah, there has been previous world cups" and then your brain engages once more, you consider how cricket has changed in the last four years and the answer comes "Ha, maybe I'll add 10-15 % onto the last one"liverbnz wrote:Haha! That 10 minutes could be the difference!
Then you brain disengages, the gears come to a halt, you sit back, wait for the blank stare to return and wait for the Six Nations to begin.

Well the range of six predictions is very interesting. We have from 284 to 680, so the difference between those two predictions is about 10 per match!
Just Duty to add his prediction. I am imagining he is calculating a very high number as we speak factoring in that it will be raining sixes every time England step out to bat

Thanks, everyone is up to date. Some very interesting picks so far. The consensus seems to be around the strong seam bowling nations to do well as you might expect. But there is quite a lot of variation in the order of them, and some predictions of surprise packages which could be a good call as these things hardly ever go to form.

Suppose I should have a go at this though I have zero confidence in predicting all those matches. So as a special favour to kingraf who has enough pressure I will go for SA to keep their perfect record of failure in knockout games
...which considering India seem to be in Australia on holiday and Pakistan and West Indies are both in disarray means that Group A will provide all the semi finalists (Yes I know...don't really believe it either but just for fun)
Australia to beat England in the final after NZ and Sri Lanka fall in the semis.
468 sixes.

Cheers Alfie. I honestly think if we win a knockout match here, we'd have made such progress in banishing these demons. We should really have won in 1999, but we went wrong because we tried to crawl to the line. Klusener made a rather fateful error in judgement (that said, if Donald had gone for the run, with Waugh off balance, and under massive pressure, he might have had a chance), but having Klusener down to bat at eight was nearly criminal.

Geek news.
There were 24 sixes in the Ireland v West Indies game.
If that were to be the average in each of the 49 games, by my back of the envelope calculations that would see 1,176 maximums being struck. Makes the highest prediction from me of 680 seem very conservative!

I was wondering how that was going. I think there have been 55 so far in 5 games. All teams batting first have scored over 300, so it is looking like a tournament where a hell of a lot of sixes will be hit!

Re: World Cup Predictions Competition - Charity Donation for Winner - Entries by Fri 13th Feb
A few stats on this:
There have been 19 entries with everyone backing Aus to make at least the semi-finals. 15 have them in the final with 9 having them as the winner
NZ come next with all but one entry backing them to get to the semi-finals, though only 3 have them as the winner.
Eng and SL have only one pick each to win the whole thing, with everyone else going for either Aus, SA or NZ
Pak only have one vote to reach at least the semis. All the other "Big 8" have at least 4 votes each though no-one has backed India to reach the final.
The average number of sixes chosen is 459

so we have had 11 6's per game on average and there is 42 games?
going by the small sample we are looking at around 460 plus. which is very similar to our average of 459.
