The best three films by.... Empty The best three films by....

Post by Adam D Tue 28 Apr 2015, 8:48 am

Whilst going over the Carpenter vs Argento thread, it got me thinking about directors best three films. I suggested that Carpenter had the strongest trilogy within the horror genre and possibly overall with the Thing, Halloween and the Fog.

So who else would you nominate for the best 3 film box set?

Spielberg - ET, Close Encounters, Jaws

Tarrantino - Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Django Unchained

Hitchcock - Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest

Nolan - The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Inception

Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, The Outlaw Josey Wales

Tony Scott - True Romance, Top Gun, Man on Fire

Ridley Scott - Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner

Obviously there are other films from these directors but  who do you think has the strongest trilogy and with which films?

Spielberg would be Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List and Jaws.

What about Kubrick with The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange?

Saving Private Ryan is one of the worst films I have ever paid to see.

The opening 20 minutes were good but after that, I have seen better episodes of Call of Duty

He also lists his favourite film as Moulin Rouge, criticism from Adam is the greatest compliment a film can receive.

The Coen Brothers would have a pretty strong list and its really difficult to just choose 3 (despite the fact that I haven't liked any of their recent(ish) releases):

Raising Arizona
Miller's Crossing
The Big Lebowski

Would it be cheating to choose Krzysztof Kieślowski for:

Three Colours Blue
Three Colours White
Three Colours Red

ET's perfectly fine, but nostalgia means it's rated higher than it should be and I'm not convinced it's aged all that well.

I watched Earth to Echo recently that the kids loved - its basically a remake of ET.

I think its aged quite well - most of Spielbergs films have (despite the fashions). I dont think Nostalgia has anything to do with it.

To paraphrase ADmiral Akbar, its a trap. You really dont want to know what he gets up to in libraries.

AS for the Prestige Crimey, you need to give it a go - Nolans best film.

I did not rate the Prestige, the twist was remarkably obvious and I am normally terrible at spotting such things. Insomnia is one of Nolan's better films that rarely gets a mention.

The Hurt Locker is an extremely average film, almost certainly amongst the worst to win best picture Oscar, was almost completely devoid of any narrative. Point Break is just nonsensical, macho drivel. Zero Dark Thirty on the other hand is a perfectly good film.
