The best three films by....
First topic message reminder :
Whilst going over the Carpenter vs Argento thread, it got me thinking about directors best three films. I suggested that Carpenter had the strongest trilogy within the horror genre and possibly overall with the Thing, Halloween and the Fog.
So who else would you nominate for the best 3 film box set?
Spielberg - ET, Close Encounters, Jaws
Tarrantino - Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Django Unchained
Hitchcock - Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest
Nolan - The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Inception
Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, The Outlaw Josey Wales
Tony Scott - True Romance, Top Gun, Man on Fire
Ridley Scott - Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner
Obviously there are other films from these directors but who do you think has the strongest trilogy and with which films?

Not a fan, albeit haven't watched it for years so it might hold up better on a rewatch. I certainly don't think it has aged well as a film.
Philistine, Jaws is as great today as it was the day it was released, which is absolutely fantastic. Spielberg's finest hour bar none.

I view it in this way:
Jaws did things that no other movies had done, or at least had not done successfully. This is what made it good. Unfortunately, as is often the case, so many films have then taken those things and done them Jaws no longer has the same impact as it would have done had I not seen all the things that made it special done in many films.

Wish I hadn't bothered trying to be non-sexist and including films by a woman now....won't bother with Sofia Coppola's efforts if you're all going to be a bunch of w*nkers about it.
Never said any of them were great but figured they were her three best films

Do a Nora Ephron top three Dave, you can pick any at random, nobody will admit to having seen any of her films on here so nobody can pick your choices to bits.

I think you did a great job SerialDAVE.
You also gave Jeff a chance to talk pompously about 'narrative' and undeserving Oscar winners so I'm sure he is pleased. Sneering old movie snob that he is.

I have no idea who Nora Ephron is...if she's the singer Nora Jones who married Zach Efron from "High School Musical" then A/ I didn't know they got married, B/ She's got sh!tty taste in men and C/ I still couldn't name a film of hers

You cant argue with that reasoning, even though he's listed a surname that is in fact different to Ephron. I find that logical impeccable and i'm fully impressed.

Good thread. I'll give a shout to John Sturges. Several cracking well paced films but with sufficient characterisation and plot to lift them well above being simply ''boys own adventure''.
My top three would be The Great Escape, Bad Day at Black Rock and The Magnificent Seven. Honourable mentions as well to The Eagle has Landed and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Some splendid performances in all these films from a wide range of actors.

Ahhh of course! My bad, lack of sleep due to baby Womble being up since 4 has made my brain fry! I'll put Jackie Brown in instead.

Hmmmm............. should I say? Oh I'm not that old.... I think... (late 40s???) But I started watching movies as a very young child sitting beside my father. And although I hope I keep young at heart, my soul truly is back in the Golden age of Hollywood (3Os,40s, 50s, 60s)

Re: The best three films by....
SecretFly - I also like films from those eras very much. I'm a decade older than you and when I was a kid they used to be regularly shown on tv at weekends.
A favourite actor from those times is Paul Muni, a largely forgotten and overlooked figure these days.

Beat me to it but exactly what I would have had as well. I will mention that I find Kurosawa almost impossible to rank film wise but I will give it a try, I have no doubt I'll have changed my mind by tomorrow.

Ikiru
Stray Dog
Rashomon
Ingmar Bergman:
Persona
Seventh Seal
Wild Strawberries

Bullet in the Head
A Better Tomorrow

Wong Kar-wai:

It Happened One Night
It's a Wonderful Life
Sidney Lumet:
12 Angry Men

Dog Day Afternoon
Walter Hill:
