fav Brit/Irish Fighter ever
Wayne McCullough is mine. Tough as old boots and rarely ever going to be in a dull fight.
Honorable mentions, Lennox Lewis,Nigel Benn and Carl Froch.
Froch is hated by some, but I enjoy watching the man box. Great entertaining fighter.

Conteh was a hell of a boxer.
Funny I used to hate prince but he could fight. Exciting as can be.
Eubank was a good fighter for sure but always preferred Benn

I was a nipper when Honeyghan had that fine run vs Curry, Bumphus and Blocker and the rematch TKO over Vaca but remember how excited my Dad and Grandad were watching him. So Honey, Benn, Eubank, Watson... A little later Lewis & Naz of course. Calzaghe definitely goes down as more talented than Froch and Hatton but both those guys have their place.

Conteh, McGuigan, Bomber Graham, and Sibbo and Lewis wouldn't have been far behind.
Conteh is our best British boxer over the last 50 years IMO.
Favourite British fighters of late Hatton, and Froch.

Conteh and minter in the 70's. Laing and honey in the 80's. Eubank and lewis in the 90's.
I always looked forward to benn and naz fights although I didn't particularly like either of them.

Naz was my first love, and they do say you never get over your first love. After that lot of time for Froch who is normally a good watch. Will also give a couple of honourable mentions for Jamie Moore and Wayne Alexander, only domestic, euro level guys but almost never in a bad fight.

I was never fussed on Benn or Naz, but they were never in a boring fight, just didn't like them.

Unlucky really to cop for Johnston who was a very decent fighter when he finally got his chance.

For a man who likes his technicians, you've picked a few rough diamonds there fingers. You'd have liked castro smith v wharton. Nico was there if I remember correctly?

One of the worst and most disgraceful decisions I have ever witnessed, even Wharton's fans thought he'd lost, at least Dick Turpin wore a mask.milkyboy wrote:For a man who likes his technicians, you've picked a few rough diamonds there fingers. Thought it was you nico... Absolute shocker. Smith could really fight, but had no fan base, fought on the road and got shafted a few times. Bit of a British glen Johnson.

McCullough was hard not to like, very dedicated and a hard trainer.
Benn was the most exciting for me. I enjoyed watching Bruno and the banter with Harry, I was young and impressionable.
Like most I initially liked Hatton until he became a caricature of himself.

Giving a shout to the provinces, Mcguigan fights were always an event, Macaulay was good value... Well the bassa fights were. Buchanan was a bit before my time but Jim watt was worth a watch. Colin jones was value too, even if he did flatten laing twice.

One of the first fights I saw over here was McKenzie - MacAulay..........
McKenzie was useless that night..........
Didn't see the Bassa - MacCauley fights but I saw Bassa win the title off Zapata.........The best action was after the fight when the place got completely trashed.......
Made Minter-Hagler look like a tea party !!!

All those you've mentioned were in some great fights, Jones could hit, remember Watt's Glasgow kiss on Sean OGrady, Watt was definitely losing that fight, blatant nut.milkyboy wrote:Giving a shout to the provinces, Mcguigan fights were always an event, Macaulay was good value... Never understood how Davis lost to the ordinary Jim Watt.............
Out of all his fights Davis never wants to talk about that one................Say's he's too embarrassed about it !!

Grew up hearing "know what I mean 'arry?Uhuhuhuhuh" so Bruno is iconic. That said, I believed Lewis was the best and could beat anyone and rooted for him against Frank.
Naz was the guy everyone loved when I was at school. I'm not so fond now as I was though.
Loved Calzaghe but wish he'd tested his ability more.

Yeh, we were all surprised too truss... Jim was limited at the top level but tough. Made the best of what he had that's for sure.
Nico, always makes me laugh when he talks about fighters being careless with the head in commentary after the way he planted o'grady

True enough fella. Was always pleased for steve Robinson out of that lot. Nice story and seemed a good bloke. Had mixed feelings when naz flattened him. On a personal level I wanted robinson to win, from a British boxing perspective you knew naz could be special. Felt the same when honeyghan beat mittee a decade earlier. Mittee was a top guy and honeyghan a jerk by all accounts.

Benn, Hatton (up until Tzyzu) and Calzaghe.
In regards to Hatton he seemed to barely scrape passed the gatekeepers when he shipped out to the US. Callazo was unlucky imo. Then beating a faded Castillo set him up for his demise

Mason was a genuinely nice guy whereas Bruno had an entirely manufactured image, had he not run into a Lennox Lewis in destruction mode he could well have been the better heavyweight of the two.

Hatton was rubbish and we all know it. Most overachieving boxer ever, no skills just maul foul, push elbow.

From these shores that makes him a legend. I think we know he was very good and very game but had a few obvious flaws that would always see him come unstuck against the elite.

Re: fav Brit/Irish Fighter ever
Bruno and Naz were the ones I loved when I was a nipper just becoming aware of boxing and getting in to it. I can remember being on holiday when I was 7 / 8 and taking my lilo out on to the balcony of our hotel room, propping it against the wall and pretending to be Naz as I danced around it throwing a load of punches at it. The lilo admittedly did counter me a few times but I think I did just about enough to pull out the decision.
Jason Booth has always been a favourite over the years. Out of today's lot I enjoy the Dickinson brothers as well as Ovil McKenzie. Never liked Gavin Rees back in the day but he's turned my opinion on him in the last few years. A bit higher up the ladder it's been Froch who I've shelled out the most to watch in action by a mile.

Is Lilo a euphemism Chris? I had mates who would do that regularly on lads hols.

When people moan about some of the arrogant personalities around today and how people can support them.............I always remember lovable Frank who was really a bit of an a**ehole................
Remember him saying in a KO magazine interview he told Honeyghan he should stop being so arrogant and outrageous because he could make more money..

Re: fav Brit/Irish Fighter ever
Was always a Benn fan and despite him losing to all three of his rivals, he's my favourite. Me and my dad used to catch his fights on TV when he was just starting out. Remember the uproar at the Anthony Logan fight not being televised and the papers reporting about it the next day (first time Benn got dropped). Gutted when he lost to Watson but made me appreciate Michael all the more especially the two epic scraps with Eubank. Could never really warm to Eubank until the three fights series with Calzaghe and Carl Thompson who always gave value for money, win, lose or draw. Always wanted Calzaghe to do more than he did but I'm still in awe of his performance against Lacy. Thompson's fights with Eubank, Sellars and Rothman stand out as does the fight with Haye when he shipped an almost inhuman amount of punishment before prevailing. Was always a fan of Haye even before the Thompson fight despite him being in the decidedly unglamourous CW division and despite my better judgment I think I'd still be interested to see him fight again (without shelling out for the privilege). Took me a while to warm to Lewis and even then wished he'd had more devil about him in more of his fights.
Obviously a fan of Hatton, never got the hype about Froch when he was being pushed by the BBC but gave him props for the fights with Pascal, Taylor and Abraham. Did himself no favours whining about the first Kessler fight or the loss to Ward (it's not what warriors do) and then somewhere along the line he got a massive head on his shoulders and I went off him. Even his lovely lady isn't enough to make me warm to him. Always preferred Groves to Degale. Loved watching Clinton Woods finally get his World title especially when he was a massive underdog at the time.
