Decent performance from Novak (and, indeed, Niemenen).

He was on the ropes for a bit in the 2nd set but that was more a reflection of Niemenen's level than Novak's.

I'm encouraged by a few sights of the BHDTL which he was hitting quite well.

The drop shots however, were dire.

Grigor is still 1 of the favourites for Wimbledon, losing in 1st round at RG means nothing in the long run. Jack can be tough on any given day too, future top 10 player.

Disagree JM, Dimi continues to disappoint. Didn't even win a set on his way out of R1? I've more faith in Krygios.

On the face of it, that is truly dire. Admittedly Sock is one of the hardest possible R1 draws with his current form, but you'd still expect the #10 seed to go out on his sword. Nope...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cilic follow him out shortly either, leaving the top 8 + a few dangerous floaters. That 9 - 16 region in the rankings is a tad sparse lately.

Away from the showcourts, good wins for Isner, Gasquet, Almagro and Carreno-Busta.

I had mentioned it a few weeks ago already, but yet again - I am starting to give up on Dimi.  I had had high hopes for him.  I knew he was no Federer but I was hoping he could one day take over #1 spot.  However, he is currently going nowhere.

Which is a nuisance because I just cannot warm up to DHBHs the same as I can with SHBHs.  I kind of like the way Kyrgios plays but I will never be a true fan.

Anyway, we have a few good youngsters coming up at least - who knows, they may overtake Dimi and co sooner rather than later.

In all seriousness, he is the guy I am now hoping can improve enough to challenge for the very top - though I am not convinced he will.

Also, I have to say that I do not really like Thiem's FH too much.  But beggars cannot be choosers, so I root for him.

Some commentators said while Dimi is the younger version of Fed, Thiem is the younger version of Stan. Both played too far behind the baseline for my liking. Not everyone can be like Nadal, who could play from way behind the baseline and still wins most of the time(though I prefer the Nadal who played closer to the baseline the way he did when he first started out).

No preference for SHBH, more interested in a powerful forehand with varieties, or a special or unique forehand ( Gulbis forehand being the exception). Delpo's laser like easy power forehand impressed me too, Gonzo's and Verdasco's too.

I like Thiem the most among the youngsters. Hes quick, and fights hard. I like his attitude. Dimi is too inconsistent; Tomic too though I like him when he plays his best tennis, hes a bit like Murray. Coric is like the young Novak but he too plays well behind the baseline, more like a clay courter. Kygrios has speed and power, varieties too but I dont like his go for broke style, hes more like a showman too, hes a combination of Tsonga and Monfils.

Kygrios is most likely to make it to the top I think. Seems to be the strongest mentally.

I like Thiem, but suspect he may be top ten/twenty but never a superstar.
