Re: Ireland v Scotland, 15 August
As has already been mentioned Laws are open to interpretation by the referee. Teams cannot self-impose the law because they do not know whether that is the same interpretation as the referee. It is the referee's job to adjudicate and be consistent for both sides.
Owens is considered a good referee because he consistently applies the Laws through the whole game. Barnes is considered a poor referee because he often shows inconsistency in his application of the Laws throughout a game.

Re: Ireland v Scotland, 15 August
i think Barnes gets a bad rep for one game which happened 8 years ago.. and only because kiwi's (lets be fair now) are generally not good with taking surprise losses on the chin (perhaps because it happens so rarely).
I actually think Barnes is a very good ref these days. Not the best but up there. The kiwi ex pro is coming on leaps and bounds though.

It's like watching 'Lost'. You need to commit to the long haul to finally get the answer.
It definitely is like Lost. At the end, you never do get the answer!

If it were lost then Earls would be Walt - built up to be something special then failed to do very much.
Quality!

LordDowlais wrote:Or we could all agree, that if the coaches and players respected the laws and they were not constantly trying to find ways to break them the refs job would be easier and the game itself would be a whole lot better.
I disagree that the game would be better - pushing the laws is how innovation occurs in rugby, and I have no wish for that to disappear.

Re: Ireland v Scotland, 15 August
My first day free since the game so i re-watched the game and i must say that i thought that Payne was ordinary to say the least in attack. Defense he was solid but this not offering anything in attack is a serious worry for me if he stays as starting 13.
Maybe it is all a Schmidt tactic of not giving anything away attacking wise before the RWC but to me, he looks very sluggish for a 13 at international level.

I'm very surprised France haven't written to World Rugby sggesting they don't want Owens refereeing them. But then I guess that would be deemed as churlish.
And if Ireland wrote to World Rugby to complain about getting Wayne Barnes in the recent Six Nations game what would you say about that?
I'd say show me similar evidence to the figures that Nigel Owens reffing Ireland v France throws up.
There is a poster on this forum called GunsGerms. He's your man. You two have the capacity to entertain each other for hours on end
But he didn't say it - you did.
Another interesting Nigel Owens stat, This decade:
Ireland's average points gap v All Blacks WITH Nigel Owens reffing: 12pts (3 games);
Ireland's average points gap v All Black WITHOUT Nigel Owens reffing: 41pts (3 games)
While we're on interesting stats...
Wayne Barnes has been the referee in 5 (50%) of Ireland's last 10 defeats.
Wayne Barnes was the referee in one (10%) of Ireland's last 10 wins.

Re: Ireland v Scotland, 15 August
Now Aukster, that's because Barnes is a great ref. Owens could also be a great ref if only he didn't allow Ireland to cheat .... according to those very reasonable chappies on Gwlad.
Ireland lose = great ref. Ireland win = poor ref. Simples
Ireland lose = great ref. Ireland win = poor ref. Simples

You're on to something there!
Let me join you in a venture to create an...... APP!!!! (oh I love that word).... an APP to help World Rugby analyse and rate their world reffing panel. It would be flawless and expedient, clean, efficient and create inter-creative mechanisms of connective paradigmes using interpersonal digital sensory platforms (that final mumbo jumbo is absolutely essential for making it sound cutting edge )
I'll only take 70% of all profits because after all, it was your idea......
?? Whadiya say????

So who is it, then? Earls or Payne?
Come on, come on - I'm a busy guy although if you need another 13 pages to really bottom this out, then I would understand it.

Is it just Earls and Payne? Have they no other options, then?

Re: Ireland v Scotland, 15 August
What good are 10 alternative 'options' that can't play well enough???
Really, I'm beginning to think some 'options' people here are really people who watch too many BoxSets!!
Who cares if there are a million plotlines trying to run in sequence at the same time. (Billy's wife is pregnant and he doesn't want to tell his lover because he's too busy trying to find the terrorist that he just found yesterday was married to his estranged daughter before she had her sex-change that Barry, her ex, couldn't get his head around and needed to go to therapy for before saving the two guys in the life raft that were smuggling in the drugs that killed his sister ----- f**king good episode by the way!!! Missed it.)
Anyway, they's all options you can use to enjoy the experience of watching 20 hours of drawma in the one go.
I prefer just two. Keeps me sane.
