Re: Eng v Aus - Limited Overs Thread
Stokes isn't doing enough to keep his place in any of the international sides, being an ok batsmen and bowler shouldn't be enough to stay in the side, I genuinely don't see what he offers aside from the odd catch.

You could play Woakes, instead of Stokes? Plenty of options.

He's doing ok enough in tests for me, but not the one day stuff at all. And much like Chris Jordan you can't keep a dude in the side cos he fields well...

Re: Eng v Aus - Limited Overs Thread
Any team with Stokes, Woakes, Willey, Rashid, Ali and Plunkett seems like too many chefs to me, specialist bowlers still have a place in one day cricket.

Like Wood but one specialist frontline bowler isn't enough for me, a long batting line up is all well and good if you're bowlers can impact on the game.

Stokes is an X factor player. Having 11 solid players makes you too predictable

I agree, but who? btw, my comment about Wood was more about how badly our specialist bowler has done.

Re: Eng v Aus - Limited Overs Thread
Stokes get by being thought of as an X factor player but he very very rarely produces to make his inclusion worthwhile. I would go with Wood, Finn and Broad once the latter is available, the specialist bowler is always going to suffer when the rest also leak runs, batsmen can play themselves in against Woakes or Stokes.

Root
Morgan

Re: Eng v Aus - Limited Overs Thread
I'd keep bring Bairstow in for Stokes myself but aside from that I fully agree with Ali opening, he's wasted batting at 7 or lower but I don't want Anderson anywhere near the team at his age. This was the first one day game i've enjoyed in a long time to be honest.

Yes Stella. I would go for your team.
Hammersmith harrier Anderson isn't an old man. He is an extremely fit just turned 33. He could play until the Champions Trophy. He was at number 4 in the ODI rankings in Jan. Didn't see any other England bowlers there.

But ... do we really need these overblown WWF-esque monikers? Get a grip, fellers.
Grumpy old Pom rant over. Thank you.

Longggggggggggggggg way behind the leading nations in ODIs.
2-2 with one to play - including yesterday's successful chase where they probably could have chased down a few more than 300 had it been necessary - suggests otherwise. Maybe the way behind the leading nations is actually getting shorterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?

If they were playing a World Cup or Champions final on Sunday , instead of just the deciding match in a one off series , and all were available ; then that would be my side too. (Though I'd consider opening with Root and leaving Moeen where he is.)
But as we are currently between major championships it makes sense to be experimenting with various players/combinations with a view to the future. Expecting a good deal more of such rotation over the next year or two : who knows who will be fit and in form come the next major event ? One thing Australia usually have (not so much right now) is a lot of players with a fair bit of ODI experience they can call on when the big events come around. England should aim for the same.

He may well be but i'd rather he was saved for the test match arena.

So, one over, 3 decisions from the umpire - all wrong.
How the hell did Roy and Hales not review that second LBW call? Hales trying to get rid of a competitor

We can certainly hope so.
Although the series looks lost after England's poor start today.

Vince
Hales
Ali
Taylor
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Woakes
Willey
Broad
Finn
Roy, Plunkett, Rashid as back up.
Think Ali can do the job as spinner. Roy has done ok but not convinced. Would have him lower down the order if anywhere. Hales deserves a long spell in the team IMO, got to stick with him.

Been watching on Delay tv and just caught up. Yeah, terrible umpiring and an even worse non review. Hales doing his partner and his team no favours whatsoever.

Re: Eng v Aus - Limited Overs Thread
In the longer form of the game, I'm nearly always for ''bat first'' on winning the toss. However, the opposite pretty much applies in my book for limited overs stuff in mid September with a 10:30 start - surprised decisions have been made to bat first in the last two ODIs.
Australia lost last time out after winning the call and not looking at all good for England now as Bairstow goes ....

I cant see England lasting the full 50 overs now. Hopefully they will get a score over 200 though and place some pressure on the Aussies.

Billy - fully agreed. Btw, imo Botham is a very poor commentator and analyst. He questioned whether the ball was too high. That seemed entirely superficial and inappropriate. It had no bearing on the particular delivery. It was as if Botham felt he had to say something to justify his presence. His comment didn't and just made doubts over his Sky role increase further.
Great players don't necessarily make great pundits.

Agreed guildford, i think Botham's fellow commentator was right on in it as well and told him it was a full delivery. Pretty poor from Botham.

Oh dear... Missed that England innings ( have seen some highlights) : what the devil happened ?
Rather bad luck Morgan getting injured , when they were already in a lot of trouble ; do hope he isn't too bad ? Though he didn't come back , so that ain't good.
About zero chance of getting Australia out for less than that : so this decider may be a bit of a fizzer , alas. Unfortunate for the crowd. But I guess it gets me an early night

such a shame to battle back in the series and then just capitulate like that.

W5 L5 against the two best ODI sides around this summer. Not bad overall, with a young side playing a less archaic brand of cricket
