Wales vs Uruguay
First topic message reminder :
WALES vs URUGUAY
Millennium Stadium
Sunday September 20th @ 14:30
Live coverage on ITV and S4C
Referee: Romain Poite (France)
Assistant referees: Pascal Gauzère (France), Mathieu Raynal (France)
Television match official: Ben Skeen (New Zealand)
And so it starts.
RWC 2015, first up for Wales are Uruguay. A team of amateur players that are the lowest ranked team in the competition. They qualified by beating Russia, this is their third RWC. They have won two games previously against Spain and Georgia.
Wales are huge favourites for the game but as the Uruguayans are the weakest team in the group Wales actually have a massive pressure on them to perform at the top of their game and set a bench mark score, that should this pool go down to points, will beat the others in contention.
On the back of a disastrous game in Cardiff against Italy, Wales will have had to re-focus themselves for this game.
Wales have never played Uruguay before. Our A team played them once back in 2001 where a young Shane Williams scored two tries and Gavin Henson excelled at fullback for Wales to win 66 points to 22.
We have no idea what damage teams like England and Australia could do to a tired Uruguay team towards the end of the pool stages. Wales will need to put a cricket score on Uruguay to prove a point before going into our first major game at Twickenham.
Wales Team
Liam Williams (Scarlets); Alex Cuthbert (Cardiff Blues), Cory Allen (Cardiff Blues), Scott Williams (Scarlets), Hallam Amos (Newport Gwent Dragons); Rhys Priestland (Bath Rugby), Gareth Davies (Scarlets); Paul James (Ospreys), Scott Baldwin (Ospreys), Samson Lee (Scarlets), Jake Ball (Scarlets), Luke Charteris (Racing 92), Sam Warburton (Captain, Cardiff Blues), Justin Tipuric (Ospreys), James King (Ospreys).
Replacements: Ken Owens (Scarlets), Aaron Jarvis (Ospreys), Tomas Francis (Exeter Chiefs), Dominic Day (Bath Rugby), Dan Lydiate (Ospreys), Ross Moriarty (Gloucester Rugby), Lloyd Williams (Cardiff Blues), Matthew Morgan (Bristol Rugby)
Uruguay Team
15 Gaston Mieres, 14 Santiago Gibernau, 13 Joaquin Prada, 12 Andres Vilaseca, 11 Rodrigo Silva, 10 Felipe Berchesi, 9 Agustin Ormaechea, 8 Alejandro Nieto, 7 Matias Beer, 6 Juan Manuel Gaminara, 5 Jorge Zerbino, 4 Santiago Vilaseca, 3 Mario Sagario, 2 Carlos Arboleya, 1 Alejo Corral.
Replacements: 16 German Kessler, 17 Oscar Duran, 18 Mateo Sanguinetti, 19 Franco Lamanna, 20 Agustin Alonso, 21 Juan De Freitas, 22 Alejo Duran, 23 Francisco Bulanti.

Amos would've had more game time in his favoured position, I think. Cuthbert is going to start next week.

Am sure this has all been mentioned but the bench seems strange with 2 t/heads there. Who is the loose head cover.
Am not a King fan but will be good to see how he goes at No8 given we have no other specialist in the squad.

Same here. Never mind the three full games against decent opposition where he offered nothing in attack (bar a 10-metre run-in) and was a liabilty in defence.

Doesn't Moriarty play number eight as well?bedfordwelsh wrote:Am sure this has all been mentioned but the bench seems strange with 2 t/heads there. Who is the loose head cover.

Sam warburton was converted from eight to seven...

Re: Wales vs Uruguay
I think Warburton grew up playing all across the back-row, but at international level 7 is his best position.
Moriarty is a 6 and an 8. Not so sure King is an 8 but I think he did alright there in his last start for Wales.

King has played at eight for the Ospreys... I think many would agree but I would have taken Navidi over King..

I know many will think I have been on the juice but I think based on potential and form this back row is your best option
6 Warburton
7 Tips
8 Moriarty
I think the Warbs/Tips combo works really well and Lydiate hasnt had a great season, also Moriarty tackles low like Lydiate and is much more dynamic than Faletau.

After watching Japan beat SA. Will Wales go fro the Bonus point/s and just how vital will the Bonus point/s become is the Rugby World Cup?

Are they in our group too? I don't see the relevance.
Hopefully Wales v Fiji will result in a ref like Peyper who allows a truck and trailer, a player going outside the 15 from a lineout and a knock on by our left wing before our fourth try.

Re: Wales vs Uruguay
After the upsets so far there are definitely a few more butterflies in my stomach than there was before the RWC started with regards to the opener.
All but a massive underestimation of Uruguay's hidden abilities and a collosal improvement in their ability since Japan put forty points on them a few weeks back, does calm the jitters.

Re: Wales vs Uruguay
Wales won't have to go for bonus points against Uruguay.
Even if Wales tried to play well beneath themselves (to keep their enemies guessing) and played in reverse gear and a few of them wore blindfolds, they still wouldn't be able to stop themselves stumbling across the line four times in this game.

Re: Wales vs Uruguay
I'm not hopeful for Uruguay in this game, that's a pretty fast attacking Welsh team. If you watched Uruguay against Japan you'll off seen Uruguay can't handle quick ruck ball at all, they can't defend against pacey players who hit them on the outside shoulder, and have no idea how to defend a 5 meter line out. If you run at Uruguay looking for contact then they will handle it fine, but recycle quickly and their hopeless.
Secondly they concede so many stupid penalties for no reason. They had a player yellow carded for shirt pulling off the ball when the supporting player was never going to be relevant. The first test against Japan even got stopped for racism, when the white Japanease players almost kicked off on the Uruguay tight head prop because he was racially abusing one of the Japanease flankers of asian looks.
Uruguay are not ready for this tournament, Australia and England will smash them off the park.

I find it incredible and beggars belief that an experienced international coach to make such a public statement!. There are a number of players who could be (to varying degrees) playing better for you Cuthbert, Faletau, Lydiate and Gethin and the likes of Amos, Tips, King, Moriarty and James must be secretly gutted.
Hes just said it was a throw away comment to a stupid question.

Why are the Welsh posters being so negative? The key here is to move Uruguay around the field. The points will come in the last 30 minutes.

It's only me who is not in Cardiff - I think the backs are playing rubbish. No brains in attack, keep dropping ball or getting turned over.

Their going wide early to tire them out quickly, by 30 minutes their players will be walking to set pieces at this rate.

Wales look rusty.
And we could have lost another FB, hope it isn't serious and he can get up to speed in training, but even if he does make the England game he better be up to speed.

Good to get the score before HT.
Hopefully Uruguay will tire and we can rack up some points in the second half.
Paul James off injured though :L, not good with only 2 LHPs in the squad.

There we go we got the 4 tries now, hopefully we can shake the rust off and go to town in the second half a bit. If you'd offered us the 4 tries before half time I think most of us would of taken it, they should tire badly soon.
