Week 7 Tactics
Sunderland vs Watford
Bournemouth vs WBA
- Sunderland:
- .................Pickford
Montoya Keane Alonso Van Aanholt
..............Gueye Romeu
....................Arter
......Lingard.................Khazri
....................Defoe
Bench
Mannone
McQueen
Cyprien
Januzaj
Redmond
Dzeko
Anichebe
Tactics
Needing a first win so attempted to pick a team to match the tactics. Three centre backs out so Alonso comes in at centre back, where I think him and Keane can deal with Ighalo who is less physical than Immobile. The team has been picked to play a passing game, I want us to play patiently and look to hold onto the ball, looking to probe and look for the right opportunity. It is essential that we dominate the middle of the park today, and get physical where necessary. Lingard and Khazri both looking to stretch the game by getting wide and Defoe being clinical as ever in front of goal. Van aanholt to provide overlapping runs.
Substitutions - if losing Dzeko and Redmond for Romeu and Khazri - 442 and play more direct
If winning - Cyprien for Arter - fresh legs
- Watford:
- Injuries: Tolisso, Watson, Amrabat, Immobile.
--------------Pantilimon-----
Janmaat--Rudiger--Kaboul--Holebas
------------Capoue--Motta------------
Robben--------Pereyra--------Moses
-----------------Ighalo----------------
Subs:Gomes, Catchcart, Prodl, Behrami, Success, Okaka, Sinclair.
Defend as a unit, we have the power to deal with Dzeko if he plays, don't let him get on the end of anything and pressure him in the air.
Janmaat to watch the overlap from Alonso.
Robben to push onto the space left by Alonso, cut inside and have a go or feed Ighalo the ball
Moses to do a job down the left tracking back as well as pushing onto Montoya
Ighalo to get in behind Bartra and Keane
Pereyra to roam the number 10 area and look to put Ighalo through on goal.
Motta and Capoue to sit in front as a screen and protect, isolating the midfield from feeding Dzeko
Be patient and play a careful game, posession is key today
80th Minute: Okaka on for Ighalo
85th Minute: Success on for Moses to keep the pace up out wide.
90th Minute: Behrami on for Motta
Bournemouth vs WBA
- Bournemouth:
- --------------Boruc
Smith -- Naldo -- Denayer -- Daniels
--------Castro -- Valbuena
Iwobi -------------------Oyarzabal
------Modeste -- Ibrahimovic
Bench - Federici, Francis, Cook, Ake,Surman,King,Afobe
Defense
I want the back 4 to sit deep and negate there pace.
Naldo to pick up the forward
Denayer to cover with pace
Full backs to show them down the line
Castro to marshall infront of defense
Attack
Castro to play balls out wide and keep play ticking over
Valbuena to get forward and create chances and shoot from distance
Wingers to get down the line and cross
Ibra & Modeste get in the box and use physical presence to win headers and poach in the 18 yard box
Subs - Ake for Valbuena - get a DM on if winning
- WBA:
- -------------------------------------------------Myhill-------------------------------
De Marcos-------------------Tah----------------------Sule--------------------Dawson
----------------------------------Yacob------------------Evans-------------------------
Vazquez---------------------------------Asensio------------------------------------Coman
----------------------------------------------Aduriz-----------------------------------------------------
Subs - Phillips
GAMEPLAN
I want EVERYONE to defend. When Bournemouth are in our half close them down asap.
DEFENCE
Reliable keeper in goal. Defence to play high up as Ibrahimovic is not the quickest player out there. Fullbacks to make overlapping runs and get crosses into the box.
DefenceMidfield
Yacob and Evans main role defend and cut passing lanes and close down attackers.
Wingers
Vazquez and Coman bring pace to team. Get to byline and whip in crosses for striker to finish.
AttackMid
Asensio to play quick passes with teammates and make runs into box.
Strikers
Aduriz is a classic old school striker. Very good at heading and real goal poacher. Want him use his attacking prowess to get on end of crosses and power headers in.

Sunderland v Watford

- Sunderland v Watford
Interesting set of tactics from both managers desperate for a win.
Watford – Interesting that they’re expecting Dzeko but ended up with Defoe, for me Rudiger is a great centre back and tall but for me is susceptible to aerial duels so Dkezo may have been the better option. Not keen at all on Moses taking the LW role, he’s shone this season due to being the WB in a 3 man Chelsea set up, don’t think this set up benefits him. On the other flank though there’s a Dutch synergy going on but I could see Janmaat being isolated at times. Like the spine of the Watford team, Motta’s like a fine wine in the centre and Capoue is playing well at present.
Sunderland – Big loss to their CB roles and to ask Alonso to step in, Ighalo looking to get behind will certainly pay off against offside traps. Sunderland’s forward four imho is just not good enough at this point in the league. Both sides are set out to play a patient passing game but I’d give the nod to Watford’s midfield being better equipped to do so although Romeu is playing exceptionally well for Southampton in RL. Not quite sure on Trebs transfer policy, seems to buying a number of players that then end up on the bench, Cyprien, Redmond & Dzeko is £25m worth of players.
Overall Watford edge it in a low scoring game.

Both teams playing a patient passing game, which resulted in a bit of a bore fest. I felt Sunderland would have won comfortably with direct pacey game instead, but with the tactics largely cancelling each other out, it comes down to which XI I think is better - and for me that is Watford
Watford WIN

- Sunderland v Watford
I found this really difficult to call. Both teams are very solid in the middle and have a very good finisher up top. Both have weaknesses in creative players, Moses has done well as a wing back but I don’t think he’s good enough to have an impact against Montoya going forwards, while Lingard/Khazri are pretty average. I think this will come down to Alonso being slightly out of position with a very attacking Van Aanholt next to him, and Robben being able to take advantage to nick a winner
Watford win
Bournemouth v WBA
- Voter 1:
- Bournemouth – Team wise it’s the strongest in the league going forward but it’s certainly suspect at the back, Naldo aside there’s no-one that overly impresses me and the battle between him and Aduriz should be a good one. I also worry for the decision to let the wingers see the line, this plays into the hand of WBA who are looking to do exactly that and fire in crosses. On a similar note Bournemouth will look to do the same back and the tag battle of Modeste & Ibra v Sule & Tah should be a slugfest.
West Brom – Think it was the right call to play a high line v Ibra & co, though Iwobi v Dawson I can see causing you trouble. Whilst there was a mix up with your keeper it’s clear Myhill needs upgrading on and I think Ibra & Modeste will look to capitalise on him at set pieces.
Another close game but overall I think West Brom edge it on the tactics in a high scoring game.
- Voter 2:
- Another game where it is patient play and similar tactics. Not a week for watching MotD! And both teams attacks are better than the opposition defence. A really tricky one to call and once again it comes down to quality in the two sides, which makes it a Bournemouth win
Bournemouth WIN
- Voter 3:
- WBA are going to get toasted at left back with Dawson up against Iwobi. Both midfields look a bit weak with Valbuena not the best at CM and Evans in a completely unfamiliar position. Can see WBA giving the Cherries defence a hard time, but I’d expect Bournemouth to win this in a high scoring game
