I think displaying trophies is rather vulgar. surely its the taking part that counts and being jolly good sports. that and looking well groomed

Re: 1872 Cup 2016: Edinburgh (holders) vs Glasgow - Boxing Day
I've just taught the last lesson of the term. The pupils came in looking for the end of term fun lesson. I told them we had a session on how ever since Shakespeare first started it nouns have been transforming into verbs and that we would be examining the process in detail, with special attention to how brand names affect the noun/verb/proper noun status.
Then I showed them the Two Ronnies "My Blackberry Isn't Working" Oh how I laughed.
Looking forward to Boxing day and watching the posh Turkeys getting stuffed.

Re: 1872 Cup 2016: Edinburgh (holders) vs Glasgow - Boxing Day
Booked my tickets last night and looks like it will be a good crowd again - upper 20,000s at a guess.
The entire East stand is basically full and the areas round the corner into the north and south stand are filling up too. I'm assuming the standing ticket are sold out.
I'm taking the in-laws to their first ever rugby game - I hope Edinburgh put in a decent performance so they aren't exposed to the angry/sweary side of me!
The chances of this happening will be significantly increased if Duncan Weir starts.

If Glasgow are losing though they'll be exposed to far more sweary angry shouting from the unwashed supporters!

Do you mean the chances of a decent performance from the nail varnish wearers? Or your, already bitterly disappointed, in-laws seeing the angry/sweary side of you? There's ambiguity and there's just plain opacity. Please, up your game, or are you foreshadowing the generally clueless, but almost there, performance we can expect from the Kath Kidtson fan club?
p.s. is there any truth in the rumour that Myreside will be illuminated for the rest of the season not by floodlights but by an alternative energy source provided by the club's new sponsor: Yankee Candles?

I accept I could have been clearer but I think it is easy enough to tell from the context that Duncan Weir starting wouldn't be a good thing!

The first part of the sentence is the main thrust of it: if I may use such Schlongian language. The part in italics qualifies what has gone before. It would be more logical to assume that your closing sentence refers to the main point of the sentence which precedes it. GC can explain this at great length if you have any money left after buying industrial amounts of mansize tissues to dry the tsunami of tears you will doubtless shed on Boxing Day.
Also, it is interesting that all the insults aimed at the Luvvies were not commented upon but a very large hook baited with a minor grammatical quibble was swallowed hook, line and sinker.

You obsess with your 'fishing' and people's supposed biting - are you one of those sad old men that glues 50ps to the pavement and sits in the dark in his house watching people trying to pick it up while giggling away to yourself?
I merely accepted my bad grammar and hinted that you were being a pedantic barsteward as it is obvious that Duncan Weir starting is not a good thing.
I appreciate that I am probably giving you your 'fishing' cheapies by even responding to this but I class this as care in the community - whatever makes you happy!

Re: 1872 Cup 2016: Edinburgh (holders) vs Glasgow - Boxing Day
An Edinburgh supporter and a Glasgow supporter walked into a bar.
The Edinburgh supporter ordered a white wine spritzer, the Glasgow supporter was told to get out as he was barred! He wasn't worried though as he didn't want to drink somewhere that didn't sell out of date Tenants lager for less than £3 a pint. besides, he'd managed to pick pocket the Edinburgh fan's wallet on the way out and so he was able to go hunting about for an offy that sold buckfast!

RDW, I shall consider your slightly huffy response an early Chrimbo prezzie. You must be really keeching your kangaroo skin jodpurs at the prospect of this year's Slaughter Of The Effeminates. I'll bet the Luvvies team talks are just as terse and fraught this week.
Waste 50p on prank. You Luvvies must be wealthy beyond our imaginings.
Tiger Not funny, but then your city's main contribution to stand up comedy was Bill Barclay.

Re: 1872 Cup 2016: Edinburgh (holders) vs Glasgow - Boxing Day
Glasgow teachers are known to use the following translations for the remarks they make on pupils' report cards:
"A born leader" - Runs a protection racket
"Easy-going" - Bone idle
"Good progress" - You should have seen him a year ago
"Friendly" - Never shuts up
"Helpful" - A creep
"Reliable" - Informs on his friends
"Expresses himself confidently" - Impertinent
"Enjoys physical education" - A bully
"Does not accept authority easily" - Dad is in prison
"Often appears tired" - Stays up all night watching television
"A rather solitary child" - He smells
"Popular in the playground" - Sells pornography

My boss asked me when I was heading home to Glasgow for Christmas.
It took a lot of restraint not to react in a way that would have got me fired!
Apparently Southerners don't appreciate the difference.

Ah, but they have learnt the Edinburgh Rugby lessons. let Edinburgh have a go, fail miserably to instill any skills or rugby ability.
Glasgow step in, take over and show them how it is done.
Fully expect the Glasgow tram to be 'World Class' 1 season after it is finished

I actually thought of that joke myself (which is probably obvious). I toyed with the idea of revolving the joke around a Lush store but thought that would raise more counter jokes about being posh!
