Amazing is a bit far - they're pretty good, nothing special.
Number one D in the NFL without their best player.
They're one of about 8 teams to hold that tag - and lets face it it's measured in yards...in points the #1 D was the Pats.
No great defences out there this year, just a lot of pretty good ones. If they had Watt, maybe they'd be great...but they don't

And hopefully the notion of an 18 game regular season too. Imagine another two weeks of regular season play to get banged up in...we've already had enough Connor Cook/Matt Moore...

Giants had their foot on the Packers throat and only came away with 6 points.
Now they're down a score at the half and kicking to GB.

3 score game with 9 minutes to go for an anemic offense. Eli becomes an awkward question, he's been terrible this year

Gonna enjoy boatgate this off-season.
Odell didn't have a great game but some of those drops were just crap passes from Eli. The receivers sucked early but Eli was just terrible in the 2nd half.
Also they invested a lot of money in DEs to play contain against Aaron Rodgers. Can't sit in coverage all day and expect to slow him.

Can't see Boatgate being anything more than a whisper struggling hacks use to prop up specious arguments. Aside from going out playing hoops or committing a crime, nothing a player does on his day off should affect anyone other than the player. And heading off for a break in the sun should have a positive effect on his play. OBJ simply had a bad day, at the same time as the Packers scheming for him pretty well. The Giants weaknesses are the same they were earlier in the season - a QB heading for the down slope, no running game and a defence one or 2 injuries from a performance cliff (note the impact once DRC was out of the game).
I'd also point out at least 2 bonehead plays by Giants players - the KR that went OOB at his own 4 (it may not have gone OOB if he'd left it, but it would have at least gone into the EZ where he could shepherd it out for a TB), and the Eli fumble where the RB (Perkins?) let the ball roll around instead of picking it up. If you are winning you are forced to overcome those, but if you are losing they are back breakers.
On top of that, once he got in rhythm you saw a masterclass of QB creativity from Rodgers. At least 3 plays he avoided multiple defenders to create an opening, including 2 TD's. He's the prime reason the Packers came into the playoffs hot, and the prime reason they are a threat next week. I'm just not sure they can handle the Cowboys running game - the Giants didn't have one and the Cowboys have arguably the best.

I'm am pretty surprised with last night.
Decided to call it quits and pick up the remainder of the match today when 0-6 down and Rodgers threw an intentional grounding penalty... this was on the assumption that we were as lucky as anything not to be down 14 or so and that my watching obviously wasn't helping.
Great performance second half

Doug Marrone to be Jags HC.
Did a decent enough job in Buffalo when he had Schwartz coaching a great D I guess. EJ Manuel was his guy also though.

I actually dont think Marrone is a bad HC. Being a HC is far more than coordinating 1 side of the ball as his successor in Buffalo proved

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
At his best I think McCarthy is as good a game day coach as Belichick, just not as consistent and lacks the knack the latter has for talent. His adjustments in game were spot on, i.e.changing up his RB to Michael (to give them a more direct pounding type runner) and running more crossing routes. That led to the Giants running less blitzes and giving Rodgers more time. I'm just not sure the Cowboys will afford them the same opportunities. Could be a shootout next week.

Actually the weird part is then Making Coughlin Exec VP. Talk about a potential power struggle. This is either genius or madness. Roll on next season!

Meanwhile in Giants player and transportation news, the Giants plane home from GB was delayed 3 hours after so they could clean up after them.

Especially when that market has literally said they do not want another team, and in the process you've alienated a great historical football city in San Diego
The NFL really is successful in spite of itself most of the time

The whole thing is pathetically cheap. Spanos is paying a 650m fee to move yet will only commit 350m towards a new stadium.
Glad a city finally told a team to piss off and spend some of their own vast reserves.

Sucks to see the Chargers leave San Diego. Something wrong with a league that lets teams just abandon the fans who have supported it and invested money, time and emotion in it for over half a centruy.
Nauseating to read the cliches and platitudes about how hard the decision was etc. If San Diego and its fans meant that much to Spanos and the NFL they'd have found a way to make it work. They were hellbent on two teams in LA no matter what. Hopefully LA has two stinky teams for many, many years to come.

The Redskins offense is well designed despite Cousins limitations. The Rams badly need a coach that can save Goff, he looked completely unready.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
Our offense looks ok on the stat sheet. It moves the ball generally well. Scratch the surface this surface this season and you find an offense that was historically inefficient- only one other team in NFL history has compiled as many total yards as we did and scored less points. The main reason for that was McVay's inability to solve our redzone problems... which in part stemmed from his inability to solve our problems running the ball. Then on top of all that, our offense repeatedly showed up looking unprepared and flat in the biggest of games.
I may be wrong but I don’t think McVay is HC material yet.

It's official...
Sean McVay is confirmed as the Rams' new HC.
Redskins now looking for a new OC as well as a new DC.
For all I think McVay had to up his game as an OC I would have preferred to see him stay. It's not ideal for our efforts to take the next step to have such significant upheaval on both sides of the ball.

Wade Phillips to the Rams as DC
That should help McVay. Can just let Phillips get on with running that side of the ball.
It's another poke in the eye for the Redskins though who seemingly had an interview scheduled with him today.
What's happened to us?? We used to be the Kings of the offseason

Would imagine Phillips as DC was a big part of the reason McVay was hired by LA - will be interesting to see if he can work with Goff to get the best out of him like he did Cousins. Needs to be a huge talent infusion on that offensive side of the ball though
Cannot wait for the games this weekend - divisional round is always the best NFL weekend, and we have 3 properly heavyweight matchups

Looks like the Las Vegas Raiders is happening.
Can't help thinking that with the lack of cities willing to stump up new stadia, are they waking up to the realisation that an NFL franchise mostly benefits the owners not the local economy? I know there's a lot of money sloshing around Vegas, but can it really sustain a franchise the way an area like Oakland or LA can? It's not like they can attract a lot of fans from outside the city!

4 times this season he has thrown 40+ pass attempts and failed to get 200 passing yards.
No player has done it more than twice since 1950.

Legit think the Texans might be a better team without JJ Watt tho. As good as he is, you build your defence around him doing what he likes.
