Congratulations Payne & Daly
Both join the Riki Flutey club, of men who've been selected for the Lions after first playing against them.
Honourable mention too to James Hook, who opposed the Lions in 2013 after being a tourist in 2009

There's a whinge on the nz herald that there's an equal number of kiwi born players as Scottish. Granted they meant more kiwi born than Scottish but you can't expect fact checking these days.

So, did the Irishman David Gallagher play against the Lions?

Pretty sure he'd retired by 1908. Nor did he play for them
My point was more that Flutey was pilloried back in the day for being a Lion after playing against them, seems times have improved as no one bats an eyelid now.

Re: Congratulations Payne & Daly
Flutey was pilloried eight years ago because his selection showed fans still living in the past that the Lions had become purely mercenary. It was a shock to many that the success of the Lions had become solely measured in the quantity of banknotes gathered rather than some antiquated sporting notion.
Column inches and hype all help to sell the brand, and Gatland made such a success of controversy the last time out, he bought himself another shot on this tour. However using a previously successful wind-up is no guarantee of it going viral this time as everyone already has the T-shirt. Warren needs to up his controversy rating, and buck his ideas up if he wants to keep those publicists happy. He has already repeated the old - not picking the national captains thing, although picking the understudy George over his mentor this time was a nice touch. The lowest number of reps from a country would have been an even bigger story if he had picked none from Scotland but even Gatland couldn't have carried that one.
Warren's wums will no doubt keep on coming just to keep the interest at fever pitch, so we can't rule out another recall for Shane Williams, or picking a holiday maker who happens to have his boots with him, and it will be interesting to see how inventive he is when humiliating Rory Best.

To be fair to Gatland (I know, I know!) Best humiliated himself on the last tour. Perhaps Gats picked him again just to see if he would do the same drunken darts show. That's pretty cruel though. The Great Aukster wrote:Warren's wums will no doubt keep on coming just to keep the interest at fever pitch, so we can't rule out another recall for Shane Williams, or picking a holiday maker who happens to have his boots with him, and it will be interesting to see how inventive he is when humiliating Rory Best.

That's a new one on me.
I've heard a few good stories on Andrew Mehrtens flooring Robbie Deans back in the day (that's why Mitchell left Mehrts at home for RWC03 - Deans forgave, Mitch didn't.)

Gats slapped Best on his big bald head for not throwing in straight. Best went crying to Keith Wood.

Half of the Scottish squad are not Scottish, so I would not moan about the Lions.

They had an argument in the changing room one time. Best went to throw his boot at Gats' big head, but it wasn't straight...Gwlad wrote:so what happened between Gats and Best, i heard rumors one punched the other but not why?

Would have loved to have seen that one Pete. For me Merts was the biggest reason we didnt play as well as we could have, similarly Nonu in 07. Spencer was a great Super rugby 10 but lost at International level. Way too inconsistent.
