You could try jinxing Alsop - 50 up and still going.
Good start to the season by Hants - your boys look on the way to a win in this one.

Understood, JimBob.
Hants now need 73 more with 16 overs left and 6 wickets in hand. Alsop still there on 70. Hants still in the box seats but lose a couple more wickets soon and it'll have a very different look. Best we both keep quiet!

Parnell goes for 14 in the 40th over - that should see Hants to a fairly comfortable win. Just 39 needed now, 10 overs left and still 6 wickets in hand. Tommy Alsop close to a ton as well. Jimbo - feel free to ask the Corporal for the keys to the bar if you want a celebratory drink later!

Nice little 100 from my man Alsop - fairly comfortable win in the end. A good start to the season for us!

Chasing 305 for victory against Essex, Hants need exactly 100 more from the last 13 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Could be a close one but I suspect Hants haven't got enough wickets left to pull it off. Sorry, Jimbo!

GCS, it went in your favour today....
Essex just beat Surrey in a very close game. A good fightback by Surrey's bowlers to make a game of it as you would think 210 was way short considering Batty won the toss and chose to bat first. Dernbach with good figures again. From an outsiders point of view, i am surprised Burns and Sibley make your one day side. Good championship players but not really suited to the white ball comps?
Somerset chased down Kent's mammoth total of 352 with more than 2 overs to spare!

Without Roy and with the loss of Davies in the winter, Surrey's one day batting is even more heavily reliant on Sanga (and Stoneman). Simply isn't the batting depth in the one day side that there is in the championship stuff, and as we've discussed on the Surrey threads, the one day sides really truly lack some "power", especially someone to come in and play an innings ala Alex Blake today. The one day side reminds me a lot of England's with Cook/Bell/Trott etc - look to make 250-280 and defend it with a very good bowling attack.

Re: Royal London One Day Cup
I was at the Oval today. A thrilling and absorbing game - you don't need a lot of runs for excitement. Ultimately, deflating for the home supporters but probably (just) a fair result.
Essex bowled well and fielded tigerishly. Don't think I've seen Quinn before - I was impressed. He was the pick of an effective bowling unit, being quick and accurate. He certainly deserved his wickets.
Essex's man of the match though was Harmer. On the spot with the ball to get Sibley and Burns (both equally disappointing), some good stops in the field and a cool head at the end to see them over the line.
The concerns posted above about Surrey's batting is totally valid. Roy is desperately missed. The wicket was unusual for the Oval and whilst not easy for batting, it shouldn't have been a 210 all out track. It was pale in colour with no grass, smooth on top and with even bounce but seemed to come onto the bat a little slowly. The only Surrey batsman who got to grips with it was Foakes. What was unforgivable imo is that we didn't bat all our overs. We effectively gave back 14 balls - 10 runs from them could have made a massive difference.
The other problem Surrey have is that they don't really have a 6th bowler. Borthwick's too inconsistent and so can't be trusted with the ball. It helped Essex that captain Tendo bowled 3 or 4 fairly tidy overs himself as that provided some flexibility later on with the bowling choices. Surrey had no such luxury.
The pick of Surrey's bowlers by a long way was Dernbach. He's been excellent so far this season. Never say never.

Re: Royal London One Day Cup
Middlesex 295 all out after their 50 overs. Ton for Gubbins but a good comeback by Hants considering Middlesex were 172/1 off 30. Four wickets for Topley and another impressive showing from young Crane; 3/57 off a full 10 (thought he might not get his full allocation as Irvine bowled 1 earlier) in horrible conditions for a leg spinner.

Wheels coming off for Hants in their reply. 32/3 in the 9th. Rain in surrounding area but just 10 overs needed for a positive result.

Very disappointing performance from us. Sloppy in the field and complacent with the batting. Some ridiculous dismissals.

I'll be surprised if Gloucs top that. From what I saw on Tuesday, Essex seem well suited to this format. Bat deep, more than 5 bowlers available and tigerish in the field.

Fairly comfortable in the end for Essex as they win by 29 runs. They'll face tougher opponents than Gloucs (Koema-Barnett wouldn't make Olly's Saturday team!) but nonetheless are looking a decent 50 over side.

Steven Davies' nightmare start to one day cricket at Somerset continues.
Another duck today. That's 4 ducks in 5 games, with a score of 4 in the other one.
In 5 games, he has faced only 22 deliveries, with 10 of those coming in the game he scored 4.

Just realised its Ryan Davies playing in Steven Davies' place today. The curse of Davies is strong!!

Re: Royal London One Day Cup
Hi Afro - it's a different Davies who's playing and opened for Somerset today; Ryan, not Steven. Don't know if S Davies was dropped or is injured.
You're completely right though that S Davies is having a nightmare with the bat in this year's tournament. He gave up the gloves at Surrey to concentrate on his batting before deciding he wanted to keep again and then left for Somerset when he couldn't replace Foakes at the Oval.
Perhaps he'll give up the gloves once more to try and improve his batting. Anyway, good luck to Somerset in getting the best out of someone who comes across to me as talented but unreliable and flakey.
PS Afro - your last post crossed with mine.

Re: Royal London One Day Cup
Just came on here to post about Davies' latest duck - but Guildford and Afro have saved me the task of making the same mistake over identity. When he's on song there are few better players to watch batting than Steve Davies - but clearly it's again not going right for him at the moment.
PS - I see from Somerset CCC Twitter that Steve Davies had slight neck injury.

Re: Royal London One Day Cup
Essex win by 10 runs as Sussex are bowled out at the start of the 49th.
Great effort by Sussex to get up with the run rate but they lost too many wickets in the process. Although Archer swung well, Sussex look to me that they have a long tail and would benefit from an all rounder at 6.
Not for the first time this season, Essex seem a strong team in this format. I like Tendo's captaincy and particularly the way he uses himself as a 6th bowler to give himself options later on.

Morning all.
Brilliant knock by Paul Collingwood last night against a quality bowling attack. They never looked in the game until Collys knock. Also bowled his 10 overs for just 40.

Hes averaging 190 in this years cup, and not been shabby with the ball either.
Could be seen as a sign of his continued brilliance at 40, or further example that County stats dont really mean much.
Regardless hes shown loyalty through a difficult period at Durham and clearly still has something to offer the game he loves. Could have moved on to coaching or media work for an easy pay day. Top bloke.
