It is strange how these fixtures have fallen - Liverpool and Manchester City have to play each other twice in six days and in the middle of that we have the Merseyside Derby and the Manchester Derby. There is no let up in the intensity.

Re: 2017/18 Champions League and Europa League thread
Both derbies are being hyped, when in reality, City already have the title, and Liverpool pretty much guaranteed a top 4, given Chelsea’s position. Not sure Pep is bothered about when the league is confirmed, after last night.
As for last night, extremely surprised at Pep’s tactics, given that he knew what was to be expected, having experienced it first hand. Laporte at left back was a woeful decision. Pep’s setup should of had a more disciplined approach for a first leg in a testing environment, but it pointed to a stubbornness, a failure to recognise an achilles heel in his approach to the game, that was exposed at Anfield only a few months ago, and was evident at Bayern. Have to question whether there are enough winners, or experienced heads in that squad to deal with the pressure at that level, in that type of cauldron. Something to address this summer?
On a side note, Walker playing at CB for England, it’s going to end in tears.

Man City spend a small country's GDP on full backs. Liverpool play Trent Alexander Arnold who cost zilch and made Sane his bitch for 90 mins.

They spent £75m on a centre back though. Whole game changes if Sane takes that chance where no one put any pressure on him as he walked into the box from his own half.
Laporte was clearly a plan, tried last week beforehand, that didn’t work. I felt he should have put Laporte in a back there and had Danilo or whoever as a left wing back to give him extra in defence as the only problem they have with Liverpool really is the front three.
A game where Jesus shows he also isn’t a finished article; Aguero was a miss.

Salah with the away goal. Tie over
City achieve the league & minor cup double that Pellegrini achieved.

The ref has had their back a bit today but it was always gonna be a game where one goal led Salah to victory

They will be heavy favourites but are vulnerable at the back and have been all season - Liverpool could be a real challenge for them.

Currently 2-0 down and hanging on against Juventus.
Half-time was sweet relief for Madrid.

Real Madrid bribe got to Michael Oliver just in time. With such a weak ref no wonder they didn't select any Englishmen for the World Cup

Brilliant penalty by Ronaldo, the greatest player of his generation. Great game, overall, and an utterly bizarre set of quarter-finals.

They didn’t select any English refs because the ref in line for that role left to ref in Moneyland and did so too late for them to be able to use another ref.

Imagine the salt from the above turd should Liverpool go on and win the greatest club competition in world football.

Re: 2017/18 Champions League and Europa League thread
Juventus were caught out defensively and the defender ran up from behind jumped up and swung his leg around catching the attacker around the side/shoulder/chest area. Not sure how much of a push it was from the back as the defender jumped in the air - but there seemed enough contact with the leg to make the award of a penalty a reasonable decision. It's maybe a disappointing conclusion to the match but that's the way it goes sometimes.
I think the referee was too harsh and hasty in giving the goalkeeper a straight red card (it should have been a yellow) given the situation. Ronaldo kept his cool and concentration to deliver a top class and perhaps unstoppable penalty.

Offensive/abusive language and/or gestures is a straight red all day. Laying hands on the referee also. Doesn't matter if it's an 11-0 thumping down at the park on a drizzly Sunday morning, or a Champions League QF in the Bernabeu.
Only mistake Oliver (a fantastic referee, by the way, should be at the World Cup this summer) made was not sending more Juventus players off.

I don't care about Roma's aberration in the last round, Liverpool should take care of an ordinary Serie A side. The draw they woulda wanted.
