Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?

As if by coincidence an email has come round my company this morning asking if anyone wants to move to the Dubai office!

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
This is a big incentive for Edinburgh, who are unlikely to finish in the automatic qualification spots
PRO14 Rugby will introduce an exciting change to its Champions Cup qualification process that will see the 7th ranked team decided by a Play-Off match that will form part of the Guinness PRO14 Final Series.
This fresh addition to the Championship has been warmly welcomed by the Guinness PRO14 clubs and will see the two fourth-placed teams from each Conference face off in a winner-takes-all clash to qualify for the Champions Cup.
The fixture will take place on the first weekend of May and home advantage will be awarded to the team who has finished the regular season with the highest match-points total. This move is designed to ensure competitive balance between both Conferences in order to award the final Champions Cup qualification place.
The first six places from the Guinness PRO14 will automatically be claimed by the teams who finish in the top three of each Conference. The South African teams remain ineligible to qualify for EPCR tournaments, so should a South African team finish in either the top three or in fourth place they will be replaced by the team that finished below them in that Conference.
"The new Championship format is off to a fantastic start and it's so important to us that no matter which Conference a club is in, eligible teams have an equal opportunity to qualify for the Champions Cup. By pitting the two fourth-placed teams against each other we're creating a fair fight and giving fans a Cup final style occasion that they can relish."
The new development has been met with excitement by Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill, who said: “The Guinness PRO14 has already shown in a short space of time that it’s a really ambitious and competitive Championship and I think the addition of a play-off for the final Champions Cup spot only adds to the excitement of the tournament.”
“The addition of the play-off allows every club to maintain hopes of a run at qualification for the Champions Cup, which is only a good thing.”
Martin Anayi, CEO of the PRO14 Rugby, said: "By the time May rolls around our fans are going to be the big winners thanks to the enlarged Guinness PRO14 Final Series which will see six teams battle for the Championship title and another two going at it to qualify for the Champions Cup. That's double the number of teams who now have something to play for after the regular season ends which is a great result for the clubs, their fans and the tournament.
"We are committed to raising the standards of our Championship and the introduction of the Champions Cup Play-Off brings a dynamic element to European qualification. After careful consultation with our clubs we strongly believe that this is best solution for the Guinness PRO14.

So on current form we'll probably be fighting with Treviso for 4th spot and will likely play Blues or Connacht in the playoff. That's not a bad chance of qualifying and much better odds than what it would have been if we'd stayed with the Pro 12. We're also helped by Italy no longer getting an automatic spot.
That home defeat to Treviso may cost us dearly though...

Do you really think we stand a chance of finishing above Leinster, Scarlets or Ulster??
I'm being realistic!
I'd like to think we could definitely fight off the challenge of Treviso but it depends on how long they can keep up their current form, particularly during international breaks.

Excellent. It was obvious right from the first announcement that the original arrangement would favour sides in a weaker conference, and I really did wonder why they didn't go for this at the start.

As an aside, I wonder how long it will be before the SA teams try and get involved - that's where all the money is after all.
Can't see the 'Pro 12' teams being overly keen though, and that may cause tensions when it comes to agreeing how the league should be run.

Lots of good news on the Edinburgh injury front. Not so good that there's no mention of Dickinson though.
Mark Bennett
Following knee surgery, the 24-year-old is scheduled to return to full training in early December and is predicted to make a return to competitive rugby in mid-to-late December.
Duhan van der Merwe
The South African born winger has reacted well to hip surgery and is on course to make a return to competitive rugby in early November.
Darcy Graham
The 20-year-old winger has made great progress in his rehabilitation from a knee injury and is scheduled to return to training in mid-November.
Sean Kennedy
The 26-year-old scrum-half is scheduled to make a return to full training in mid-November following ankle surgery.
Rory Sutherland
The loose-head prop is on target to return to full training by late October following groin surgery.

Sure I mentioned it before, but the rumours are he's done. Massive shame, but (and again I think I've mentioned this before) he's been talking of retiring for a while and I don't think he'll be that upset if his rugby career is over. Dicko and his wife have a side business which I believe is going quite well, so I'm sure he'll be fine to focus on that.
Plus with Dell and Sutherland at the club, we should be ok for LHs for now.

I think they might still have hope, but from what I heard that hope is diminishing. Probably not going to announce anything until they are 100%. Fingers crossed he's fine and gets over it, but it doesn't sound promising.
Don't they also run some sort of fitness/personal training thing as well?

Dubai is famous for second rate anybodys who go there to get a pay rise, or because they were sacked elsewhere. No one actually heads there if they are any good .
Place is an expensive toilet catering to overpaid, and under qualified expats hired by locals who have more money than sense.
There is a wonderful bbc program on this, whereby a project manager for the largest tower in the world was asked how many high rise buildings he has project managed.
And guess what it was his first

Was about to say - everything OK alive? That was a completely needless and unprovoked attack on an individual (the blue badge is nothing to do with it) and you're keeping on going now...!
No one takes themselves overly seriously on this thread, which makes this outburst even more random...

So in a bid to boost Edinburgh's morale Richard Cockerill has said if they were playing in the AP they'd probably be near the bottom.
I know it is true, but he's got a funny way to motivate his players!

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I have a theory, unproven and halfbacked, that capital cities and rugby teams don't go together well...
see Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leinster up until they got their act together.... (I'd state that Lenisters best players come from farming country outwith Dublin). i'd also add Aukland to the list, although I know that's not the capital of NZ.
I'm tempted to attribute it to a sense of self-importance (ha!) that comes from representing the capital, which is often cruelly stripped away against hard pipe-hittin muthas from Munster, Glasgow, Dunedin, King County etc etc.
Full disclosure - I live in London

I kind of get what you mean - to paraphrase, the rich city boys are a bunch of softies and the tough poor folk from the suburbs and more rough cities (i.e. Glasgow) are much more suited to rugby.
There is probably some truth in it but it is also a gross generalisation - you could make a long list of legendary rugby players from Edinburgh, London, Paris, Dublin and Cardiff etc!

Yeah, it is a massive generalisation. What I was getting at is that the culture and atmosphere in capitals seems harder to grow or maintain

Might actually be the sort of game that Edinburgh do quite well in. No real pressure and they have a history of doing well in cup games.
London Irish will hardly be making this competition their priority. They are into a relegation dogfight already and their only priority will be staying up this year.
It will be interesting to see what sort of teams both sides put out. I guess Edinburgh can go strong, then rest all the front line players next week. There will be a lot of squad players heading out to Russia for the next game no doubt.

it's the classic dilemma for a team facing relegation - they probably don't give a crap about this competition but they really could do with a morale boosting win. Edinburgh at home are their best bet for the foreseeable future!

"We are committed to raising the standards of our Championship and the introduction of the Champions Cup Play-Off brings a dynamic element to European qualification. After careful consultation with our clubs we strongly believe that this is best solution for the Guinness PRO14.
On this one, I noticed comments on the Facegram, Twitbook and the like of people complaining that the new structure confuses them and that this change adds to the confusion.
Is there anyone that really doesn’t get how this works? It’s all fairly simple stuff really. If so, do they also struggle to tie their shoes and boil the kettle?

This is a world where Donald Trump is president, the UK voted to leave the EU and a reality TV show called 'Bromans' exists (Bros + Romans = Bromans) - anything is possible!

On that scale of things that are possible, what are the chances of the luvvies making it out their group?

I'd say better odds than Glasgow making it out of theirs!

The first working title for "Bromans" was "Ladiators", apparently. Went for the classy title there...

Risky
Firstly, the words don't happen by accident. Each one is chosen with the meticulous care and consideration that Frodo exercises before kicking possession away.
Secondly, how could Fes and his posse be disappointed by the Luvvies being trounced on a weekly basis?
Thirdly, every new kit launch is the antithesis of disappointment: chain mail anyone?

RDW_Scotland wrote:it's the classic dilemma for a team facing relegation - they probably don't give a crap about this competition but they really could do with a morale boosting win. Edinburgh at home are their best bet for the foreseeable future!
I'd be shocked if it wasn't pretty much all change for us. We've got injuries to first choice players already and could do without any more. Also plenty of squad players and youngsters who'll be keen for some game time.
We had a morale boosting win against Edinburgh at home last time out in the Challenge Cup the year we got relegated. Fat lot of good it did us!

Bru - have you been figuring our what private practice life is all about (i.e. it involves you bending over a desk and thinking of Natalie Portman)?
I think I did 2,400 billable a year as standard, because my life is awesome.

I can only hope and pray that Bru's jokes are funnier this weekend.
1. Allan Bhatti
2. Brown Turner, WeePee if Brown fails HIA
3. Zander Rae
4. Swinson
5. Wee Jonny Cummings, it'll be pace in the last 20 that's needed not bulk; sorry Brian
6. Batman
7. Half-Man Half-Mullett
8. Ashe Fagerson.2 again upping the pace.
9. Aldi Price Henners to close the game out. The Chiefs employ the umbrella/banana defence and creep up with no regard for the offside line, a nippy wee 9 sniping can keep them honest
10. Dancer: there is only one. Horne, either to bench or start at 12, as back up
11. Sarto MadMentalNiko
12. Horne/Johnson one benching one starting
13. Grigg Is he the only fit 13? I think he is.
14. Tennessee Tam
15. Hogg Jackson has played all six so far: if Hoggy is to play against the Ladyboys next week he needs some game-time this weekend.
This gives us a 5-3 bench with Henners, Niko Horne/Johnson. Niko can cover all of the back 3, if Horne starts and Dancer needs to come off then Johnson goes 12. My main concern is if anything happens to Grigg. We could end up with Hogg or Niko defending the 13 channel against Henry Slade, who is rather good.
Mind you Jackson may bench and cover 10/15.
