Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I have had a Mesmeric brain fart.
Off the top of my head, I made an Aviva Premiership team of 23 made up entirely of Scots. Not a dreadful team, although for some bench positions I had to really scrape the bottom of the barrel. Let me know if I missed anyone.
1. G.Reid - London Irish
2. J.Kerr - Leicester Tigers
3. J.Welsh - Newcastle Falcons
4. O.Atkins - Exeter Chiefs
5. A.Davidson - Newcastle Falcons
6. J.Strauss - Sale Sharks
7. B.Cowan - London Irish
8. M.Eadie - Northampton Saints
9. S.Steele - London Irish
10. T. Heathcote - Worcester Warriors
11. T.Visser - Harlequins
12. D.Taylor - Saracens
13. M.Scott - Gloucester
14. S.Maitland - Saracens
15. G.Tonks - London Irish
16. S.Lawson - Newcastle Falcons
17. K.Traynor - Leicester Tigers
18. M.Low - Exeter Chiefs
19. G.Young - Newcastle Falcons
20. D.Denton - Worcester Warriors
21. B.Vellacott - Gloucester
22. R.Hutchison - Northampton Saints
23. B.McGuigan - Sale Sharks
Waterboys:
Ally Hogg (No.8) - Newcastle Falcons
Cameron Redpath (Fly-Half) - Sale Sharks
Head Coach: Carl Hogg
Frankly, this team would be thumped most matches, and goes to show that if a 3rd Scots pro team sprouted from the earth, we'd really struggle to initially fill it with top Scottish talent. It's almost exactly 50/50 with half the group home grown and half coming through the exiles system (#ScottishGrannies).
Also, Cameron Redpath, son of Bryan, swapped Scotland u18s for England u18s, and subsequently England u20s. He's currently with Sale Sharks' Academy and looks like a hot prospect.

Well, the back row and the outside backs are not too bad at all. But the tight five wouldn't last long at the set piece. Not sure about the halves - journeymen is the best I could say.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Scotland 7s have named a fourteen-man core squad for the upcoming season.
Head Coach John Dalziel has selected a blend of youth and experience for his first Scotland 7s squad, with three XV-a-side internationalists and three uncapped 7s players included.
The squad are looking to build on their best ever overall finish of seventh last season and, on top of the ten World Series tournaments, will compete in the Commonwealth Games and Rugby 7s World Cup next year.
Once again Scott Riddell will captain the squad. He is one of seven players involved in last season’s Cup final victory at Twickenham named for the season ahead.
Hugh Blake scored a try in the final against England back in May, while Jack Cuthbert, Jamie Farndale, Dougie Fife, James Fleming and Jo Nayacavou can also boast Cup winners’ medals going into the new season.
Having spent a large majority of last season injured, James Johnstone, Gavin Lowe and Nick McLennan all retain their place in the core squad.
Former Glasgow Warriors and London Scottish centre Robbie Fergusson is included in a core Scotland 7s squad for the first time. The 24-year old has previously played 13 times for Scotland U20.
Harvey Elms, Nyle Godsmark and Sam Pecqueur are all named on a part-time basis.
Godsmark has 12 World Series appearances to his name and plays for Melrose in the BT Premiership. Elms plays in the back three for Currie while Pecqueur has played ten times for the national U20 side.
Scotland 7s Head Coach John Dalziel said: “I’ve really enjoyed the first few months working with the players and staff. They are a really driven and experienced group.
“We have a great mix of experience and youthful exuberance, which is very healthy, as we look at ways to evolve and improve as we move forward.
“Scott Riddell is an excellent professional and a very good leader. He has been a great support to myself in the early stages of my role and is a good person.
“Scott will be vital to the squad’s development as both a player and with the experience he can bring to our young players.
“Jamie Farndale, Dougie Fife and James Johnstone have all be training with Edinburgh Rugby recently. It’s clear these players have developed greatly and have really impressed during their time.
“Their time at Myerside has been in full collaboration with ourselves given our time out from competition and further enhances Scotland 7s as a key development pathway for developing future pro and international 15s players.”

Good to see a few new faces coming into the sevens setup.
Does not look like Cockers is going to be poaching Any of Farndale, Fife or Johnson though.

SRU have just announced the 7s squad for this year new names are:
Robbie fergusson
Sam pecquer
Harvey Elms
Same pecquer has a fair bit of pace and is good club player, Robbie fergusson has done very well at LS and is a good playmaker.
However I'm personally delighted for Harvey elms, himself and Lewis Carmichael were in the same team throughout school and neither were stars of the team with others in that side making scotland age groups, but both have worked really hard since leaving school and in the last year have both been given SRU contracts. Normally a wing/Fb Harvey has been playing in the centre this year but is a very good sevens player so hopefully he gets a good chance

Harvey Elms has been talked up for a while as a potential Pro player, but supposedly wanted to get his degree out of the way first. It will be interesting to see what he can do at sevens and where it might lead for him.
Robbie Fergusson as well, has been very unlucky not to pick up a pro contract in Scotland and this might put him back in the shop window.

A good squad but you wonder if any of those will ever go on to play for Scotland - I suspect not.

Sevens Player Draft
Ayr
Robbie Fergusson
Boroughmuir
Nick McLennan
Currie
Harvey Elms
Hawick
Hugh Blake
Jo Nayacavou
Heriot's
James Fleming
Marr
Gavin Lowe
Melrose
Scott Riddell (Captain)
James Johnstone
Nyle Godsmark
Sam Pecqueur
Watsonians
Jack Cuthbert
Dougie Fife
Jamie Farndale
Can't help feeling the proposed Super Six would be beneficial to the Sevens program. Did Hugh Blake he'd think he be assigned to Hawick after playing for NZ u20s and Bay of Plenty?

With the centre injuries at Glasgow and the general malaise at Edinburgh, how did Fergusson not pick up a contract? Hopefully this is nothing more than a 1 year sojourn.

Some good and bad news on the injury front for Glasgow.
Fraser Brown is virtually back and ready to play, may be in the squad for the Benetton game next week. Johnny Gray apparently making better than anticipated progress as well and should be back before the AIs.
Not so good on Oli Keeble though, as Ryan Grant is now back training with Glasgow again, suggesting he is going to be out for a while.
Nothing on Hoggy yet though.

Ryan Grant is just a full time trainer and journeyman just now filling in gaps as they appear - can't be good for his long term security and you wonder how long he will stick it out.

That may be part if the interview process for "the tight five" over in Luvviedom but we don't do that sort of thing at the home of The Once And Future Champions.

He must think he still has something to offer if he gets his chance. It does seem a long shot though!

Grant is fair getting around, wonder if he will actually get a contract somewhere. Both pro teams could have done with Jack Cosgrove now, shame he moved to Bristol.

Gee, you're a medical man...what is the state of play with Eck Dunbar's knee? (Either one).

Cosgrove is turning into a big loss. A young loosehead who could be SQ'd. Glasgow should have made the bid.
If Grant can get healthy and any sense of form, he can be a good mentor for the young looseheads (oldest is 25 after all). He is not worth anything more than a squad/back-up contract. Is he interested in coaching?

Is that some kind of virus? Because so's my back. And Craigs's neck. And the Luvvies' hopes of winning anything. And Schiz's career in the Diplomatic Sevice.

The Finn Russell to France starting to do the rounds again, this time Racing being the mentioned club.
The rumours are no surprise, but the wages are, 450,000 Euro PA being mentioned. The article also saying that he was considered cheap compared to other international FHs.
It would not surprise me if FR does go, but surely he is worth more than that. That kind of figure is in the ball park of what the SRU are paying Hoggy and surely he must be worth more than that now.
As usual you would imagine that leaked info like this, especially this early in the season, is probably more about his agent fishing around and putting down a marker. It will be interesting how this one pans out.

Injury update from Glasgow
http://www.glasgowwarriors.org/news/17/09/25/injury-update
Knee operation for Dunbar, out for 6 weeks.
Conservative management for Oli Keeble for his foot injury, 10-12 weeks out.
Hoggy, Johnny Gray and Hastings making good progress.
Frazer Brown, back in full training.
All in all, that is a pretty promising update, even if a bit cryptic concerning the three making good progress. Others suggestions were saying that Johnny was nearly back.

George Ford is getting £450,000 a year with Tigers, Nick Evans was apparently on £320,000 with Quins, Rhys Priestland is reported to be on £290,000 a year with Bath and Sexton got £500,000 a year to come back to Leinster.
However, there now seem to be outliers emerging. Owen Farrell's new 5 year deal with Sarries apparently gets him £750,000 per year. Aaron Cruden is getting €800,000 a year for 3 years at Montpellier and Dan Carter is allegedly on €1.67 million per season at Racing.
A Scottish player? Underrated and undervalued? Yes, I can just about struggle to believe that.

If you read the article it suggests he'd be behind the pecking order to a geriatric Dan Carter who may sign a new deal!
I'm not convinced Racing are the style of play to suit Russell.

I am not sure any French sides are, except maybe Clermont but a move like this is going to be about substance not style. Life changing amounts of money may well be available. On the basis of what they are paying some of the others, Finn has to be worth more than what Racing are offering.

The only other French team than Clermont that I can think of that would suit FR's game would be Bordeaux who lost Madigan, AAC and Beauxis from last season. They would have the money and a starting berth.

Big Vern at Montpellier may be making an offer ! We should burst the bank to keep him (Finn R). He has won us more games than Hogg (i know their positions are different) but that is all he wants = parity with Hogg.

Mark Palmer, who is usually very on the ball with these things, tweeting again that he thinks Finn is out of the SRU price range now and will be gone next season.
All a bit of a worry really, but there seems to be a bit of inevitability about it now.

You cannot come on a highly-crafted, technologically advanced, all singing all dancing powerpointy thread such as this and boast about your "basic thread". No wonder you're stuck at Admin Boy. You'll never be a Mod at this rate.
After all the IT based guidance I've given you.

Ryan Grant and Bobby Beattie, have signed for Glasgow. Grant on a short term deal, Beattie till the end of the season.
For those who are not familiar with Beattie's work (me) he can play wing or centre. Is 24 years old, played a bit with scotland 7s and been playing for Glasgow hawks.

Will Edinburgh regret not taking Grant when they had the chance at the beginning of the season?

On the other hand is it a sign of how far his stock has plummeted given Cockers didn't want to sign him even though he was so short of LHs?

Admin Boy, this thread is still awaiting the images I requested. What sort of office lackey are you? Do your job first then criticise the comedy.
p.s. Baz the Nippy Scrum Half just phoned: he got an e-mail from Ryan Air this morning telling him that our flight up for the Calcutta Cup match had been cancelled.
God bless EasyJet says I.
Still looking for two match tickets though.

Dave Rennie in BBC interview not going to give up on FR without a contest.
Johnny Gray back next week and Hoggy in the middle of Oct, so looks like he will be fit for the AIs.
Glasgow Warriors will do all they can to retain stand-off Finn Russell when his contract expires next May, according to head coach Dave Rennie.
The 25-year-old Scotland international is reportedly attracting interest from wealthy French club Racing 92, having been linked with Toulon, Montpellier, Bath and Gloucester in January.
"I've really enjoyed working with him so far. I think he could be something really special," said Rennie.
"We'll do our best to keep him."
While French magazine Midi Olympique reports an annual salary for Russell of 450,000 euros should he move to Paris next summer, Rennie said that if the player remains in Scotland "it certainly won't be for the sort of money you're talking about over in France".
"He just needs to consistently perform like he did last week," said the New Zealander, referring to Russell's man-of-the match display against Munster at Scotstoun in the Pro14.
"But in the end it's a professional sport and you do what's best for you and your family.
"Hopefully, Scotland can rally round him and keep him here."
Russell broke his nose in the 37-10 victory over the Irish and is being rested for Friday's home match against Benetton.
"He's fine," was Rennie's assessment.
"He could have played this week but we've got to rest him over the next week or so and we're pretty keen to put a strong side on the field against Cheetahs [away, Pro14, 6 October], based on the fact we have Exeter the following week [away, European Champions Cup, 14 October], so we decided to rest him this week."
Rennie, meanwhile, intimated that he expects lock Jonny Gray to be fit for the trip to Africa to play Cheetahs and that full-back Stuart Hogg is a few weeks away from a return, most likely against Leinster at Scotstoun in the European Champions Cup on 21 October.

Thought about creating a new thread on this but I know where it will end up (i.e. me locking it!)

Hamilton wasn't in the Lions squad so doesn't have first hand experience, but he was out in NZ and speaking to the players a lot. There's no real revelations here but more is starting to come out in the wash.

It's not really surprising TBH, it was clear from the way the 6 were treated that they were only called up to be injury cover for the midweek side. For a player like Russell, who IMO really should have been in the original squad, it must have been quite hard to take.
