Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?

All and all I don't think we can complain about someone of Barclay's calibre and experience joining - he may even come straight in as captain. From a personal perspective he may see it as a chance to lay down long term routes in the city for his family, with his kids no doubt going to one of the many private schools to choose from. The SRU will also look after him better than anyone to prolong his career.
As has been said previously Mata and Hardie are probably leaving so there should still be enough opportunities for our young players coming through, particularly going into a World Cup year.

I think that's possibly key, with a world cup coming up, I reckon the SRU will want to look after barcs to see him through to that.
Also I think you're probably right about him coming in as captain, would seem mad having him as Scotland captain and not club captain.

I'm not sure about that - there's plenty of examples of national team captains not being the club captain (Rory Best for one). It may be seen that it is a lot of responsibility to do both.
Given that he doesn't have much competition for leadership at Edinburgh it may well be him though!

Aye sorry, I wasn't clear, the lack of competition was what I meant. Given he's deemed good enough to be Scotland captain, it would be mad for him not to be given the Edinburgh gig, due to the lack of leaders. Also he's coming from a team that won the league last season, so he's got a winning mentality that is possibly lacking at the club.
I also wonder if the move up north was partly driven by his desire to continue tormenting Hogg . He's building a decent following on twitter from that.

Good move. Further mea culpa from the SRU. Bringing back someone they 'pushed away' not so long ago.

I would probably argue that Barclay would not be the player he is now had he not left Glasgow. It got him out of his comfort zone and challenged him to improve as a player. He was cruising in his last year at Glasgow and I can absolutely see why Toonie offloaded him. He has matured as a person and a player since then and will be a great addition to Edinburgh now, both on and off the pitch.

Edinburgh's pack continues to look fantastic for next year.
Dell, McInally, Nel, Toolis, Gilchrist, Barclay, Watson, Bradbury
Sutherland, Turner, Berghan, Bresler, McKenzie, CDP, Ritchie, Miller

Hard to disagree with that Gee. Although I'm not sure he was a 'coaster', the other side of the coin could be that he questioned authority and was told to pack his bags.

Entirely SQ too (if a little tenuous for CDP and Bresler!)
I wouldn't be surprised if Turner stays at Glasgow - he suits their style of play and he may prefer it there now he's had a run of games.

Turner is out of contract with Edinburgh this season (I believe) so I would imagine he'll be looking for a move regardless.
I also think Crosbie is probably likely to be a starter ahead of Miller. But yeah our pack is looking decent. However along with Turner a fair few of them are apparently out of contract this year, so Edinburgh need to get their finger out.

Absolutely. I'm pleased with us signing Barclay. Ritchie has come on leaps and bounds but Barclay is a seasoned pro and a leader. We've not had much of that at Edinburgh and he'll have plenty to pass on to Ritchie and Bradbury. Mata will probably go but I'm hopeful we can hang onto John Hardie and get him back to his best. Watson is a great player, but all things being equal and both being on top form, I'd still opt for Hardie and his rib cracking approach to the game.
Still, Cockerill's priority really should be finding cover for Tovey. The experiment of treating Weir as a professional rugby player must surely be coming to an end.

So, Cocker's masterplan to transform the Luvvies from the Morningside Sewing Circle into a rugby club is....sign fifteen Glasgow players.
It might work.

So Turner will probably end up at Glasgow and Fenton becomes the new guy on the block? As for Hardie, I assume he is leaving and his salary is going to be paid to Barclay.
Completely forgot about Crosbie who looks good. I hope Miller is kept after the reviews at LS. If Bradbury is still in the Scotland squad for the SA trip, he should be given a chance.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Edinburgh Rugby have signed South African playmaker Jaco van der Walt, two days before the squad departs for the southern hemisphere for the first time on Guinness PRO14 duties.
The 23-year-old former Lions star will join the squad before they set-off for Bloemfontein and will be available for selection immediately having signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.
As a highly regarded youth prospect, van der Walt progressed through the Golden Lions academy, representing the Ellis Park outfit at every possible age-grade. The playmaker was subsequently selected in the South African Schools squad following impressive form for the Johannesburg-based side.
Van der Walt made his first-team debut for the Golden Lions during the opening match of the 2014 season and has since gone on to make 33 appearances for the 2015 Currie Cup winners, scoring 147 points in the process.
Van der Walt made his Super Rugby debut for the Emirates Lions in 2015. The playmaker has made 22 appearances for the Ellis Park outfit and played a major role in helping the side reach this year’s Super Rugby final.
Edinburgh Head Coach, Richard Cockerill, said: “Jaco is a skilful young player who is equally adept at stand-off or fullback. He’s an excellent goal kicker and will provide cover in key areas for us.
"We’re delighted that he’s chosen to be part of what we’re building here at Edinburgh.”
22 Super Rugby appearances and 33 in the Currie Cup - he's got a decent level of experience.
Good that he's joining us straight away!

I'm just relieved that we've an option other than Weir if Tovey gets injured.

The very fact that they call this guy a "playmaker" makes him an upgrade on Weir. Still, I'll curb by enthusiasm until I see him play! We've had too many false dawns with foreign 10s coming in.

He's 31, he's taken a few knocks of late and is rumoured to be signing for 3 years for a union who will look after him and not play him for 80 mins every week.
I think he's being pretty sensible. Sure it's not a glamorous move for him, but it's a sensible pragmatic one.

Yes, given his recent concussion issues joining a club where tackling is optional at best, and often frowned upon, is a very sensible move for him. Just as long as he doesn't go out socialising with young Bradbury he should be fine.

Indeed - what's an extra £100k in your back pocket if you spend the next 2-3 years in England or France getting absolutely flogged so that when retire you can't pick your kids up and take 10 minutes to get out of bed.
As Scotland captain he'll probably be on the biggest salary at Edinburgh (probably around 350k) which can't exactly be sniffed at for 3 years, and he's a clever chap so I'm sure he'll get a decent job in the real world afterwards.

Edinburgh definitely leading the way in squad announcements this year. Another signing coming this morning.
JB confirmation is expected next week, so this could be someone else, maybe that centre from Bristol that was touted a while back?

2 years not three. Sound like he will be happy to hang up the boots the season after the WC then.
That would probably be a smart decision for his longer term health.

He talks about the move in his latest BBC column. Sounds like he would like it to be longer than 2 years
JB wrote:On Saturday, Scotland play New Zealand for the 30th time in 112 years.
Twenty-eight wins and two draws; not a fantastic record to say the least. You might say that we owe them one. What I do know is that I have played in three of the 30 and I have yet to know what it feels like to score a try against them. To say they're a magnificent side is like saying Edinburgh is a beautiful city. Some things are just so obvious that they don't need saying.
Speaking of Edinburgh, the news is out. I've spent the last few weeks playing a straight bat to the story about me joining Richard Cockerill and the boys from next season. I've been in press conferences and it's all been a bit of a game. I couldn't say anything until the time was right.
Scots captain Barclay joins Edinburgh
The time is now right. I'll be very sad to leave the Scarlets but I'm very excited to be joining Edinburgh. It's a two-year deal although I hope the relationship extends beyond that. I certainly don't see retirement on the horizon any time soon. I've chatted at length with Richard about what he needs from me and where he sees the club going. I firmly believe he's turning things around there now. For me, it's one more adventure at a new club. For my family, it's a chance to return home.
I need to talk about the Scarlets because they do, and always will, mean an awful lot to me. I joined them not fully knowing if it would work out or not. No player knows for sure. Some people thought it was an odd move to make, but it came at a time when Glasgow didn't want me anymore, a time when I needed a fresh start.
I wasn't at a crossroads, but I needed a new challenge. Scarlets had a great history and a great reputation for playing an exciting brand of rugby. I thought the move would help my career. I was right.
The locals made it easy for me. They welcomed me in and supported me. Captaining the club on occasion was a huge honour. It wasn't lost on me that here I was, an outsider, leading this very traditional Welsh club. To be captain on the day we won the Pro12 last season isn't just the proudest day of my time with them, it's without doubt one of the highlights of my 14-year rugby career.
Those were amazing weeks. The way we played in the run-in? I still get goosebumps even thinking about it. Some guys go through their whole career without ever winning anything and I was quite aware of that going into the final. To win playing the way we did will live forever in my memory.
What will I miss? The boys, the community. Wales and Llanelli will always hold a special place in our family. We have two boys and one of them was born in Wales. Our third child, due in six weeks, will be born in Wales too, so two of our three children will have been born in Wales. Finn is four-and-a-half and attends Welsh speaking school. The link will always be there.
What we did with the Scarlets, I'd love to do with Edinburgh. This is an exciting time for the club. There's a sense that things are on the move after the disappointment in recent years. That's something that I'm looking forward to immensely.
Of course, that's way down the line. It was reassuring to get my contract sorted early, as it's allowed me to focus all my energy on the autumn series. Since the final whistle against Samoa, facing the All Blacks has constantly been on my mind. It's been 10 years since I played them first, a game that happened to be my debut.
It was the day before my 21st birthday, a World Cup match with Richie McCaw wearing the seven jersey opposite me. He was one of my rugby heroes. Fast and ferocious, smart and incredibly tough; in my opinion, he's the best player who ever played the game.
We lost 40-0. I remember sitting on a bean-bag back at the hotel and thinking, 'this isn't how I imagined my first cap going!'. I've had two more cracks at them since and haven't got near them. The rugby calendar, injuries, and non-selection means you don't know when you'll next get the chance to play against New Zealand. When you get the chance, you have to make it count, something I believe I don't think we did last time we faced them. We've beaten some very good sides this year and I'd like to think that we're in good shape going into this game on Saturday.
We've worked incredibly hard on the training ground and in our analysis but the important thing is that we go out with an intent to play and have a go at New Zealand. The win over Australia in Sydney in the summer highlighted that - the ferocity and accuracy, the creativity and execution - is what's needed again. We need to lay it all out there and see what happens. We'll have another capacity crowd at BT Murrayfield. It'll be a monumental occasion. Challenges like this are what you dream of as a rugby player.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Bit of a mixed bag of news on the Glasgow injury front.
Tim Swinson out for 4 months following his finger injury. God knows what he did to it, but it has needed surgery. That seems a hell of a long time for a finger to heal, so it must have been quite serious.
Better news on Matt Fagerson, who does not need any surgery and will be back in a couple of months.
Even better for Rob Harley, who will be out for 4 weeks or so. Back in time for the Derbies you would hope.
Paddy Kelly is now fit and will be playing club rugby this weekend. Hopefully he will get a proper run out at some stage and we can see what he has to offer.
Big Brian seems to be coming back to fitness now and Peterson will have to be earning his pay from here on in it would seem.

If you liked it...you should have put a ring on it.
As Susan Calman said to Leslie Crowther.
So Tim Swinson will most likely miss the 6N's. Means tomorrow is GG's chance to put himself in contention, as opposed to Toonie setting him up to fail which is the only reason I can see for him being in the squad.

FFS I was just sorting out (another) trip to Italy in March and Timbo is fecked along with BBB. Huge influence they have in the big hits in midfield to the sheer effort of the GWs. Big Brian is good and Greg Peterson can be good if we give them a chance. Paddy Kelly is a rising star and can learn from Alex Dunbar and Huw Jones in the big hard running/tackling centre positions. Nothing on Oli Kebble , Vunisa or our other new giant prop ? All needed asap.

Vellacott has come on and has brought Gloucester back into the game. He looks like a guy who will be of interest in the 6 nations as a third choice if Laidlaw is not ready.

No - Barclay's comments in the post-NZ press conference were excellent - particularly the line that to call New Zealand off-colour (or whatever condescending bollox is offered by the Kiwi press these days when their side was outplayed for a lot of the match) does a huge disservice to the levels of skill it takes to play the game at speed in the way that Scotland does.EWT Spoons wrote:RDW_Scotland wrote:He really does write fantastically well - better than any other rugby column I've seen. He's exactly the kind of guy Edinburgh needs.
Isn’t it technically Tom English writing who is just chatting with Barclay.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
In amongst all the drama yesterday, Edinburgh flew off to SA for their two games down there.
I would be interested to see who they took with them. I would be surprised if they were to have released anyone from the Scotland squad that far ahead of the last game as we were always going to take some casualties in the NZ game. You might imagine we will see a few fringe players (Miller, Galbraith??) get their chance.
A guess a few more re-enforcements may fly down at the end of the week and could feature in the second game.
By my reckoning, the only hooker left will be Fenton. Who is going to back him up?

Thistle podcast reporting that Finn Russell has signed for Racing. Disappointing but largely inevitable if true. Hopes this means we might be able to break the bank to hold onto JG.
It was always going to be nearly impossible to keep both.
