Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?

Interesting interview with Jonny Gray in The Herald where he talks of family and fans (he says the fans are mental )keeping him at Glasgow. He also does not know where the Bristol rumours came from but he has had no contact with them. France was mentioned -i.e. to follow his big brother but basically family friends and fans meant he had to stay.. A true Weegie is big JG

That is the news we have all been waiting for. I always felt more confident that he would stay than FR. He is still younger mind and has time on his side and still may move on in the future, but he is not in a massive rush. He will be much better looked after in Scotland and that must have been a big factor for him as well as the pay rise he will surely have gotten.
Very good for the club, it would have been devastating to have lost FR and JG in the one season.
Excellent.. I was afraid that he would leave, shows more loyalty than his brother..
If i had the choice to keep one between him and Russell, it's him and it's a no-brainer..
That being said, i don't think he has been in his best form the last couple of month, i have been used to see him play a bit better.
Or he's learned from his brother's mistakes, who made a bad move at a similar age.
Interestingly Jonny says there was no mega money approach from Bristol at all - shows how wrong some of the rugby gossip is!

I think it also needs to be considered that Glasgow are a very different team to the one RG left.
When Ritchie left, Glasgow were an ok team, but were generally around midtable, over his 4 years with the club their average position in the table was 6th. There was nothing really to suggest they would go on to the success they have enjoyed since. Also it was the year after the SRU began to get its house in order, so still early in that process.
If Glasgow were the same club today as they were then, I would imagine Johnny would be off as well, conversely if Glasgow were the club then that they are now, I wonder if Ritchie would have gone.

A good point Spoons.
On Richie I know it is easy to say in hindsight but I don't think him leaving was a bad decision, it was joining Sale that was the mistake. At the time they were probably a club at a similar level to Glasgow and he surely would have had top teams interested in him too. I think everyone was surprised he chose Sale of all places! He was no doubt sold a grand vision for the club's future and that hasn't really materialised for them. he didn't play well for them and it seems both parties made a bade decision for him to sign.
I remember thinking at the time that he would benefit from moving to a team renowned for having a big physical pack so he could develop that side of his game and shake off the show pony tag (which I think was unfair anyway). His move to Toulouse has shown that to be correct - his Scotland performances having moved to Toulouse were some of his best all-round performances so far and he has really added to his physicality.

Sale have very good talent scouts but suffer from poor management it seems. They always manage to snap up high profile signings, only to languish mid table to bottom of the league.
Very strange club. I think they need to stop trying to be Toulon and develop players in their own backyard - there must be a lot of rugby league rejects in the local vicinity!

Another very good bit of business for Glasgow. Fraser Brown a very big part of the team these days. We miss him badly when he is injured.
Nice to see us getting our signings in early this year.

Edinburgh scraping the prop barrell signing a Samoan loosehead from bay of plenty.
They also announced Anton bresler has left the club - he's been a good player for Edinburgh so shame to see him go, but we've got good young locks coming through.
They also announced Anton bresler has left the club - he's been a good player for Edinburgh so shame to see him go, but we've got good young locks coming through.
Edinburgh have signed Samoan international prop Jordan Lay ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated 1872 Cup second leg against Glasgow Warriors (Saturday 30 December, kick-off 3.15pm).
The 25-year-old loose-head arrives from New Zealand-based outfit the Bay of Plenty Steamers, and joins the club until the end of the season.
Lay featured for Samoa against Scotland during last month’s Autumn Tests at BT Murrayfield and has five caps for the South Sea Islanders.
On joining Edinburgh, Lay said: "I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I’m really excited to be a part of this team, representing this beautiful city. I can’t wait to get stuck in, work hard and put my hand up for selection."
Edinburgh Head Coach Richard Cockerill added: “Jordan is a young prop with great potential and I’m delighted that he’s chosen to join the club at an exciting time of the season.
He has impressed for Samoa on the international stage and he will no doubt add another dimension to what we’re building here at Edinburgh.”
Originally from the Samoan capital of Apia, Lay moved to Auckland alongside his younger brother James – who also plays in the front-row for Samoa – when he was just 3-years-old.
A product of Auckland’s renowned King’s College, the prop progressed into the school’s first XV, before making the move south to Tauranga’s Bay of Plenty Steamers, who compete in the Mitre 10 Cup.
Lay was handed his Samoan international debut against Tonga in July of this year, before being selected in the South Sea Islander’s squad for their European tour. The 25-year-old packed down against teammates WP Nel, Stuart McInally and Darryl Marfo in his side’s defeat to Scotland in November.
Meanwhile, lock Anton Bresler has left the club by mutual agreement in order to pursue other opportunities. The 29-year-old made 61 appearances for the club since joining in the summer of 2014. Edinburgh Rugby wishes him all the best in his next career steps.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I expect that means that there will be an announcement soon that Rory Sutherland has damaged his shoulder and will be out for some time. That will be pretty bad luck for him if that is the case, having only just got back from a long lay off. Hopefully we will see him or Dell play again before the end of the season. I think I have given up hope on Dickinson.
Bresler has slipped down the pecking order at Edinburgh a bit this year, largely due to the other locks raising their games. There was one to many to go around and I suspect he knew he was for the chop at the end of the season in any case. Pity he did not stay around to get a proper goodbye though, he has been a decent player for the club, better than many of the other imports.

I'm hopeful this was on the cards anyway, and Sutherland isn't injured, as we weren't exactly basking in huge numbers of fit looseheads.
It would also be pretty quick to sort a loan move out for a lad on the other side of the world if this was just a reaction to Sutherland picking up an injury.
But it could obviously be because of Sutherland getting a knock, but I'm hopeful it's not.

and by other opportunities, Bresler meant a transfer to Worcester Warriors. He clearly could not resist the lure of working with Solly again!
It makes sense I guess for Edinburgh to get him off the payroll if they don't need him and were planning to let him go in any case.
A brutal old business is professional sport!

Shame Bresler didn't get capped before his move. He would have been a useful addition to our second row resources.

Bresler is a decent enough player, but we would have had to have been on our bare bones to have ever capped him. Certainly not a player in the Toonie style mould, he likes athletic ball players, not big bruisers, ideally big bruisers who are also athletic ball players.
Bresler is very much an old school South African second row, from the school of hard knocks. He was a good player for Edinburgh under the Solly style, but even Cockers is trying to move away from that and prefers his locks to be able to carry the ball and off load.
RDW is right though, he will probably do well at Worcester who need a bit of dog in their pack. He will suit well a hard physical game plan.

Berghan banned for 6 weeks. Edinburgh are in a real tighthead crisis now!
Prop Simon Berghan has been banned for six weeks following his red card, shown in the Guinness PRO14 Round 11 fixture against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday 23 December.
The Hearing Committee concluded that the player’s actions merited a red card which carries a 12-week suspension. This was reduced to six weeks however, on account of the player’s good record, his apology to the opposing player, the fact that no serious injury had occurred and the manner in which he and his club met the case.
Berghan will be free to play from Sunday 4 February.

Makes a mockery of the disciplinary process that Kepu got 3 weeks for a shoulder charge to the head and Berghan gets 6 weeks for a scrape to the face!

On face value yes. However the thing about a stamp is that is aimed and to some extent premeditated. The damming thing for Beghan is that he looked down first and then put his foot down on Brown's head.
Kefu clattered into the ruck, but you could not say he was aiming at Watson. One was reckless, the other (in the eyes of the law) premeditated.
The outcome for neither Watson nor Brown was that significant but it is the actions that are being punished and Berghan's is deemed to be the more reckless (stupid, as it was utterly avoidable) of the two.
As a high entry point, he is lucky to have gotten away with 6 weeks!

Your argument make sense if crimes are judged by action and not outcome, but that's inconsistent when considered against tackles in the air as that's based in outcome (landing on their head) not action! If Kepu had broken Watson's neck he would have been banned for significantly longer - it is by luck more than anything that he wasn't injured. So again that is judged by outcome not action.
I get your point though and I'm sure you're not trying to defend the disciplinary process as it is massively inconsistent!

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I actually do think you have to defend the disciplinary process, for all its inconsistencies.
There has to be some guidelines to set some sorts of standards and to some extent there are.
The problem with rugby disciplanaries is this curious mixture of action versus outcome. You cannot have a system based entirely on either and therefore in any event when anyone is actually hurt, when the perpetrator is not hung drawn and quartered, this causes an uproar.
Similarly if there is no actual injury in the case of utterly reckless play (Kefu), then supporters are similarly enraged!
Who would be a judge?
What I am very certain about though is that we do need a judicial system and the one we have, for all its flaws and inconsistencies is better than nothing. For the great majority of offences, it is the players stupidity that is the problem and if they take the risk, then they need to potentially suffer the consequences.
Life would be very dull on a rugby forum if everything was entirely predictable.

No, it's excellent to have Christmas here because none of the locals really celebrate it (Abu Dhabi is 20% local, Dubai only about 4% mind you) which means that all of the shops are open normal hours and that means late. None of your last minute Christmas shopping panic here. You can wander into a major shopping centre on the 25th and buy whatever you like.
In other news (I'm starting to turn into Jim), my missus has started a new job as senior legal with the Ford motor company here in Dubai so she gets to choose any car she wants as a perk. A Canadian friend described her as "a terrifying driver" (which she is) so to maximise the chances of killing everyone around her before she cops her whack herself, she is choosing an F150 Raptor. Google it.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Another one that has potentially got away!
Gary Graham, son of George and latterly of Gala RFC, now playing for Newcastle has been called into the England training squad for next week.
He has done very well since moving to Newcastle from Jersey and has forced himself into the first team squad and now seems a nailed on starter. I had no idea that he was potentially international class though, especially in the English back row which is not exactly short of talent.
If he does not get capped in the 6N, which seems likely, I wonder would Scotland still have a look at him or has he burnt his bridges?
It just goes to show though, that the traffic of players form England to Scotland is not just one way!

George, when are you starting your Chrimbo shopping then?
When we were last in Universal Studios (Orlando) Mrs Pip was very taken with the Raptor animatronics, or animatronic Raptors, especially the cheeky one that kept trying to eat her hair. If she knew that Ford have put a seat on the back and you can nip down to Tescos on it she'd deffo want one. Mind you the carnage would be awesome to behold.
As for the rest of you wastrels: I'm up at Luvvietoon for the Calcutta Cup with Baz the ex-Nippy scrum half and as we arrive on Friday we could get along to Direside to see the Under 20's. Where exactly is the stadium? Are there any decent boozers nearby? Can any of you recommend somewhere to grab some post match grub?
All suggestions will be gratefully received, as long as they are not physically impossible.

Where - difficult to get to
Boozers - nope
Food - nope
You're probably best getting something in town then trying to find a bus that goes our there!

RDW, thank you for your informative and enlightening reply. It was as warm and welcoming as one would expect from a native of the Athens Of The North.
And yes, I've had my tea.

Joking aside I've only been to myreside to play rugby not to watch Edinburgh so I'm sure someone else will be able to give a more useful response!
I'm only slightly exaggerating in my responses though - it isn't an easy place to get to and is mainly a residential area with no real amenities nearby. Indeed those points are the main grievances from Edinburgh fans about the move (all 12 of them).

Ah well, I suppose we'll just have to spend the evening drifting aimlessly from pub to pub in search of a decent Rich Tea and a cup of Lapsang Souchang. And I was hoping for a change of pace.
Any tips on pre-match drinks for the Saturday?
And "Yes, have some" does not count as an acceptable answer.

Our usual pre match haunt is the Hampton which is next to The Murrayfield hotel across from the stadium north entrance. It is less busy than The Murrayfield which is always mayhem and you can get a good pint. It will still be busy though - everywhere will be.
Closer to town and the west end there's Bert's bar and Teuchters which are good rugby pubs with proper pints. Both will similarly be rammed though!
To be fair the outlets around the stadium are a lot better than they used to be - there's even a gin bar if any of your party are into that kind of thing...!

Well it certainly improved today while we toyed with the Luvvies. Seriously an awful game in awful conditions. We were bad they were atrocious. Benetton breathing down your necks Luvvies. We smashed their scrum all over the place - even pushing them off their own a couple of times. Hence Zander MoM. We were too mistake prone in the first 40 but kept trying stuff ,which is good. Finn is just class. deserves to be a rugby millionaire - light years better than anyone out there. Watson best Luvvie by a mile. Their defensive line held (till the end) despite being allowed to be offside all game by idiot Adamson and his shocking TJs. Most heart warming bit was at the fisticuffs after Wee Lee's try when all 4 stands on their feet with a resounding 'We Are Warriors' chant. And the East Stand's "Your gonna win feck all"
at the Luvvie replacements.
BTW I counted a 100% increase in Luvvie fans present. Yes up 2 to 4 Really well done chaps and chapess ! Me and Wee Mental Tam did shout out Cambo or C*nto or whatever that stalking cockroach is on here and if anyone even blinked they were to get their head flushed down the chemy toilet a few times to give it a nice blue hue. Unfortunately should have realised he is most likely a Strictly fan so does not get out much. Shame !

You had a good day then?
Fagerson, both, Smith and Bhatti all put in big shifts.
Watson was immense: here's hoping he carries this form into the 6Nations.

Yes well apart from developing hypothermia during the overheated Warriors pie evacuation scenario. It was as cold an evening as I can ever remember. Just wonder about Adamson's application of the offside rule is ? Apparently the TMO said to him on number of occasions that Edinburgh players were offside. We did get away with coming in from the side a couple of times tbf.

Well conversely there's plenty Edinburgh fans (and Cockerill) complaining about the penalty count and the ref's interpretation of the breakdown - Edinburgh gave away twice as many penalties as Glasgow. Sounded like he had a particular aversion to anything Hamish Watson did too.
Adamson really isn't a good ref - he should go back to 7s!

Think the game should have finished 0-0 by the sounds of things

A pretty poor game, but some impressive individual displays.
It looks like Mata is going to become some player for Edinburgh, something you would not have imagined having seen him last year. I thought he was going to be off at the end of the season, I bet you Edinburgh boys are glad he is hanging around now.
The Glasgow youngsters in the back row, Smith and Fagerson both played well as well, as did Ritchie. All of them could be internationals in the years to come. We are blessed with a lot of talent in that area just now. Maybe explains why Gregor has not really been paying much attention to Gary Graham's progress at Newcastle!
Gilchrist was very impressive and probably the best second row on the pitch yesterday. I could easily see him and Johnny being the Scotland second row for the 6N, with Ritchie and Ben Toolis battling it out for the bench spot. He played a full 80 mins for Toulouse on sat, so is back fit and should be battle hardened by February.
How tough is Nick Grigg and what do you have to hit him with to put him down. Plenty of Edinburgh players tried and none succeeded! He certainly is a different option at 13!

Got the Ulster Munster game on. After a convincing first half Munster seem to have had an implosion worthy of Scottish rugby. A yellow and a red card later and Ulster are clawing their way back.

Yes, Edinburgh could use the favour a little more than Glasgow. Surely that's Glasgow secured a playoff already.
In saying that Ulster have just gone ahead.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
So yesterday I randomly bumped into Greig Tonks in Richmond and it got me thinking - I wonder if he'd fancy coming back to the non-Solomons Edinburgh?
LI are near certainties to be relegated which can't get great for long-term job security. Edinburgh also have very little depth at fullback, and if we're losing Tovey and Weir his ability to slot in at 10 would be useful. He has also developed into a competent goal kicker which is a good asset.
He's not exactly a world beater - he's not a first choice starter at LI if everyone is fit - but IMO he'd be a good addition to the squad.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
I think we’re actually not too bad at FB, off the top of my head we have:
1. Kinghorn
2. Graham
3. Brown
4. Bryce
5. VDW
I think Graham might get more gametime at 15 than on the wing, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was his long term position in the team. Brown (when he gets back from injury) is predominantly a FB and is a decent player. Bryce is bang average but is capable of playing FB and whilst Van Der Walt will primarily be needed at 10, he can cover 15 (as I believe he played a fair bit there for his old club) once Hickey joins up with the team.
Sadly I think Tonks would be nothing more than filler/sentimental signing and isn’t probably needed anymore.
Arguably Glasgow are probably more in need of FB cover, with Hogg injured, it leaves only Jackson who is capable of playing FB for them, but I can’t see them signing Tonks either.
