Vote for your TWO favourite choices for On-Screen Romance - ROUND ONE CC-V.3
Culture Cup v3 - Round One - Voting open until Thursday
Welcome to Round One - Best On-Screen Romance!
There was some consternation surrounding our first round - Shah felt too emotionally charged to even pick with "fresh wounds that cannot heal" - but we have got ourselves quite the set of selections. Left-field, right-field, running wildly through a wheat field: the gladiators of our latest arena have not disappointed.
You get two picks, use them wisely.

Re: Culture Cup v3 - Round One - Voting open until Thursday
Some reasoning behind decisions:
Johnny and June Carter Cash
The only real life couple I've picked. Married for over 35 years the duo left a huge impression on country music - which might not have been possible had June not been such a positive light in Johnnys life and took him off the road of debauchery he was going down. They toured together, the wrote music together, and they almost died together - with Johnny passing away less than 4 months after June, with many attributing his rapid decline in health to a broken heart.
John L. Sullivan and a girl
This film called Sullivan's Travels (1941 - Preston Sturges) is about a wealthy film director (Joel McCrea) who has tired of making lightweight comedies and wants to instead delve into social injustice and poverty. So he dresses like a tramp and goes on a journey of discovery.
Along the way he meets the girl (Veronica Lake). Veronica Lake is thought to be the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Anyway, as romances go, these two are not a conventional doe eyed twosome. The girl is full of cynicism and irreverence. But the journey of this man and this woman is a wonderful study of a developing romance with buckets of sharp and funny wordplay.
Wesley and Buttercup - The Princess Bride
a classic romantic movie not afraid to blend romance with wit and adventure. Initially it seems that the characters’ love is superficial, though in reality it is built organically from years of honest interaction, respect for each other, wry irony playing on their positions emphasising that respect and unspoken devotion. After they fear, for different reasons, that they have lost each other for good their different but determined shows of this devotion shows that their love can’t be broken. Also, it’s the bedrock of one of the greatest films ever.
Jim and Pam - The Office (US)
A better relationship, with deeper investment, in a better sitcom.

Went for my first choice (which I didn't get) - Rick & Ilsa. Casablanca has stood the test of time in a way that I suspect Gone Girl, for example, won't.
The joke entries, presumably from Galted, are amusing, but we're voting for the romance, not the gag.
Some of the others I haven't seen.
Also voted for Sam & Diane, some way ahead of Ross & Rachel, IMHO.

I voted for Walk the Line and The Simpsons.
Did consider Casablanca and Cheers, even if the latter was borderline sexual harassment.
Is there any means of citing other players? I'm quite shocked at the underhanded tactics JuliusHMarx is using to deny me votes. By shocked I mean outraged on a Daily Mail scale.

Yep I agree with Galted. I think it's sickening slander from Mr Julius there

Yes, yes you are correct in that technicality. However, the message and morals at the same. Your actions make me sick to the pit of my stomach. No love lost here

That's true. All I said was that the choices were amusing, but not anything worth voting for. There was nothing in there about Galted's gargantuan ego, or his crack cocaine habit.

What? He's allowed to get away with that now. I suppose if he reveals how I steal from children's charities he will escape censure?

Would have voted for Perry Saturn and Moppy but sadly it wasn't an option. Also, Ricky Gervais and his love for himself, but again, not on the list.
Anyway, not fist bitches (are you still doing that, been a long time)

No, snuck one of those tiny phones up my bum but with all the violent rogering from the welcoming committee I would easily fit an iPad up there and still have room for the charger.

What did you do with Jeff, Tino and michaels? Presumably they're buried on the moors somewhere?

The Moorish Moors? Only signed back up today so have no idea where anyone is. Last I heard, Tina was Duty or vice versa. I can't recall. Michaels is probably eating chips off the back off a barmaid he's giving a seeing to whilst crying over his ex and Rowley is probably being sanctimonious somewhere.

Culture Cup and Dave return on the same day. It's like a massive massacre on Christmas Day.

What? Theoretically it sounds horrible but in actuality, you'd probably be grateful if it happened?superflyweight wrote:Culture Cup and Dave return on the same day. It's like a massive massacre on Christmas Day.
