Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
Although they will work the same muscles, upright rows will do extra on back of the shoulders and back.
Personally I do shrugs, upright rows aggravate an old injury of mine.

You're right lumbering although they hit the spot (pardon the pun)..they feel more awkward...
Use to do them both but now do heavy shrugs instead..
Maybe it's an age thing with me....seem to wear so much strapping I feel like an egyptian mummy..

I also go for shrugs, find that they work for me and are testing on the back.

Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
I used to do both Scotty.....but finging upright rows hard on the joints..and awkward these days..
Only prob with shrugs is the grip......so I use the smith machine so I can stop and replace my grip as I go heavy with the shrugs...
Around 400 pounds anyway.

Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
The gym I go to has a couple of different specialised shrug machines which I find very useful. Much easier for gripping, therefore allowing you to go much heavier than you could otherwise.
Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
Never seen one Mate.....sound good though as the grip is always a problem for me..

Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
The place I'm at is the only place I've ever seen one too, seems strange, but they're incredibly useful and allow you to work the traps better than ever before.
Re: Shrugs or upright rows???
Used to do powercleans Fisty which worked the traps a treat...However I have back problems these days so have to go around the compound stuff like deads and cleans and stick with rows, chins etc....so I do more shrugs now than I've ever done as I do them with back instead of shoulders.
