European cup matches with no thread - Round 2
Watching Munster v Glos and really hoping England don’t lose another number 8!

Poor YC imo for Savage. Thought it was a good clear out on a player killing the ball.
Exeter going well in France.

Re: European cup matches with no thread - Round 2
Who needs a number 8.
Harsh yellow card. Play only stopped because the Munster centre complains about Glaws going off their feet and assistant thinks it's about the clear out. Panics and reports it to the ref.
If that's a yellow card there is going to be several more in this game.

Yes, I thought yellow was harsh too. Let’s hope the ref is consistent.

I guess as Leinster man BOD is biased, but he has few times now suggested decisions by the ref have been unfair on Glaws.

I’ve been watching it on channel 4 - think I’ll switch over for a bit more balance.

And yet nothing for the 'charge down' of the conversion last week - Munster really do get some calls ...

It was a forearm to the head, it happens every game and it was far from clear from the replays and the ref had to do some guesswork but in the modern game it's not allowed

In which case there will be two dozen yellow cards today. It's a weak call. Should have pinged the Munster boy for lying over the ruck and trying to kill the ball.
Stone cold red card under the new rules. No discussions there.

Im not disagreeing but if you do it you run the risk, Ulster had it in South Africa last month, Alan O'Connor was carded early on and Ulster didn't go near rucks for about 40 mins then O'Connor did exactly the same thing and then a few hits like it followed and went unpunished
I'll say this, the ref is awful at the breakdown, he also penalised POM for not releasing for Banahan not being able to clear him out and there's been a few similar to it

Yep - so still struggling with how the arm in the face from the 'charge down' last week was deemed nothing as it was 'accidental' - didn't think intent counted, just outcome?

And therein lies the problem - how can a ref see a player get an arm in the mush from another player's reckless play (I don't doubt it wasn't deliberate) and decide it's fine?

I also wonder if the same incident had happened today at Thomond Park with the teams reversed whether the same ref would have made the same decision ...

what is Cips supposed to? To be honest this type of situation has been coming for a while now in rugby. At least now World rugby will be forced to act, this can't continue

Castres have had one carded too for the same thing - although it looked more aggressive.

Cips should have attempted to dip into the contact. Standing up and dropping a shoulder in as the supporting player was lazy and as soon as he made contact with the head he was in trouble. It's good for him to because his tackle technique was awful and resulted in him taking a clout to the head as well.
Twelvetrees perhaps lucky the ref missed his tackle though the player was ducking at the time which he clearly wasn't anticipating. Will Spencer will tell him that can't be used as an excuse.

Re: European cup matches with no thread - Round 2
It's easy sitting here and saying what they should and shouldn't do. Scanell is going into contact at a million miles per hour there, there isn't much time to react. There was no force in Cips tackle, if anything he was backing up.formerly known as Sam wrote:LeinsterFan4life wrote:what is Cips supposed to? Exeter always seem a bit more fragile in Europe, Kvesic was it slipped off the tackle on Mafi a little too easy for his try

There was some force but not a great deal. It's a lazy dip of the shoulder by a supporting tackler. It is easy sitting here and watching but it's also where I used to like defending when I play. As a midfield defender you have to dip ideally so your shoulder is hitting the mid point of the ball when the opposition are carrying hard and up right.
I watched the last 15 of the Castres Vs Chiefs game and there was a plethora of very obvious seat belt tackles that were completely ignored. I was baffled until I recognised the ref as John Lacey.

Chiefs had plenty of chances to make officials decisions irrelevant. They blew that big time.
In the later game, Wasps are managing to make Bath look good!

Re: European cup matches with no thread - Round 2
If Exeter want to be one of the big boys they win those matches. Playing against 14 men for a half should have been enough.
Bath if they win today will just make the defeat last week worse.
It's nice to see more good close games this week. One of the best first two rounds in a while where it's hard to say who is going to finish where in the group. Apart from Leinster & Sarries, ruining it for the rest of us.

Think Bath will also be cheesed off that two Toulouse players that should have had red cards against them will be banned when playing other teams in the group but will be back for their return match.
Something wrong with a system when the team offended against get no benefit but their competitors in the group do - not sure how to fix that one.

They are missing something. Whether that is the explosive Sam Simmonds off the base or the combative Johnny Hill I don't know. Second week in a row where I've wondered whether their halfbacks are really controlling the game to the same level as some of their contemporaries.
