Which ‘horrific tales’ where mentioned in my post?Good Golly I'm Olly wrote:Nathaniel just continually pounding those horrific tales across the board
Has Guardiola won the Champions League without Messi? No. Heck he’s never even reached the final without the Argentine...
Did Mourinho win the Champions League with Porto? Yes.
So my post was factually correct.

City were never the "favourites" to win the Champs League in my eyes. I put the continual lauding of them as such down to the English press overrating them simply because they are a club from England.

We’ve all feared Liverpool winning the league, but we’ve let it slip and they’re actually gonna win the champions league and the league.
I’m looking forward to Nathaniel continuing to claim both Klopp and Pep are frauds though.

Probably also being unfair to Poch and Spurs. Plenty of teams would've crumbled last night, they're in a CL semi final without spending, without their best player and playing in a temporary home for most of the season.

I’ve been a fan of Poch, against my hatred of Spurs, think he’s done wonders and they’d crumble without him.
Wanyama was a rock yesterday and all the talk about him being on the way out could be premature.
Pep does have his moments. Think he overdid the central midfield in the first leg and I don’t think Kompany was a good choice

Re: Champions League/Europa League Knockout Stages 2018/19
Spurs achievement in reaching the semis is immense, considering they were minutes away from not even getting thru to the knock-out stages.
But really City lost this quarter final due to their rather insipid display in the first leg. They chose the wrong team, missed a penalty and were, for most of the match ,comfortably held by Spurs.
Few gave Spurs much chance in this tie. But City seem to have a mental struggle with the Champs Lge. They have won much domestically but the main prize eludes them.

Agreed. Was heartbreaking for Raheem, for his hat trick injury time Champions League tie winner to be ruled out after it had happened, and after he had celebrated. He's fast becoming proof Pep isn't a fraud when you see the transformation in him.

I think Llorentes goal was probably hand ball but equally it would've been pretty harsh to overrule it on the replays we saw. Even if it did, I don't think it would have changed the outcome

I also think on Poch (and probably Wenger for a while) the importance of winning a domestic cup vs getting into the top 4 is probably overstated.

Llorente's goal glanced off his arm, but I don't think that makes it handball, it hit him.

I think the arm makes sure it goes in, so I’d give the handball.

I somewhat agree, but I also think that football is about winning things at some point, and least an FA Cup would be a real achievement and something their fans can remember. Even winning the playoffs is one of those days you never forget, winning a final is kinda unmatched

Doubtful to be much sympathy heading City’s way. This stings for Pep, especially as it’s back-to-back exits at the hands of domestic rivals. Spurs are nothing special either, and Kane was absent. Still a world class manager, but without doubt a significant dent in his legacy, having gone six years at Bayern & City, having spent massively, and coming up short.
Still a treble on the cards, but the CL is the holy grail for the owners.

He's still on for a domestic treble which, whilst not as good, is also something no (male) side has ever done in this country, I believe.

As for Pep, 7 times he’s entered the CL since his last victory. Not even reached a final.

I said 'watered down treble'. The PL and FA cup are worthy honors. The League cup is not.

It’s still a cracking achievement to win all three of those.
I genuinely find any manager who can make that many major finals to be someone beyond a bottler.

Dont think, if it happens, winning one of the most competitive PL title races in memory, 2 cups and going out of the CL on away goals in an instant classic will be regarded as watered down by very many

Re: Champions League/Europa League Knockout Stages 2018/19
I took "watered down treble" to mean that the League Cup, Prem and FA Cup is not the true treble of Champs League, Prem and FA Cup. As far as I know, when they talk about the treble in other European leagues they are talking about the Champs League, the countries league title and their national cup. The League cup is the weak link in this conversation.

So is it a bad thing to win it? Does it make your season worse to have it?
Klopp is criticised for losing finals and Pep for not winning the right ones?
There are a very short list of legitimately good managers around then...

No, it's not a bad thing to win it, but it's just not the same. The Double in England is the League and the FA Cup, not the League and the League Cup. Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League one season. It was great to do, but it's not the treble. Man City winning the League Cup, Prem and the FA Cup is "a" treble or you might call it the domestic treble but it's not the treble like what Man United accomplished.

Ajax dominating a sluggish Tottenham side. 0-1 to the Dutch side, could easily be 2.

And 0-1 it remained. Ajax's brilliant start subsided after about 30 minutes, but Tottenham struggled to create anything. The Dutch club strong favourites to reach the final, but maybe Tottenham can provide yet another unlikely recovery?

Tactically, Liverpool were very good, they handled Barca well, but they didn't take their chances. The ball kept falling to Milner in the second half. And Barcelona were lethal against an average Liverpool defensive effort, Messi and Suarez stupendous.
This tie is over, only question is who Barcelona's opposition will be.

To an extent just one of those days for Liverpool. Not sure they could've played too much better, though I dont think the Wijnaldum gamble worked or Gomez at RB. And when you have one of those days, the best player ever tends to punish you

Barcelona could of had five or six themselves, especially after Dembele's miss. It's not a great Liverpool side, it's rolling over weak PL opposition, but as many English sides have found out, against the elite of Europe, especially from Spain, we are still short. Liverpool could seriously end up trophy-less again this season.

I was going to say, Barca missed as many good chances as Liverpool did - can think of at least two where Rakitic/Vidal passed from obvious shooting positions when 1 on 1, and obviously the Dembele miss at the end.
I could see Liverpool scoring 4/5 at Anfield, but no idea how they keep a clean sheet whilst going for it. And to be fair, Barca have shown a lot more defensive resolve this season, and Ter Stegen is class

Firmino and Salah both ruled out of semi-final second leg, so highly doubtful now. All eggs in one basket for Liverpool now in the league, and even that’s out of their hands.

Even with Salah and Firmino, Liverpool had zero chance of overturning the tie.
