The Crucible is alive again to the sound of cues smashing into the cueball for the 2019 Snooker World Championship.

On Day One the champion Mark Williams got off to a steady start to lead Martin Gould 6-3. Ding Junhui also leads 6-3 against Anthony McGill and Neil Robertson is home and hosed leading debutant Cypriot Georgiou 9-0.

Another game full of tension. Bit of an odd one as it appears the far-less experienced man is more at ease.

On the other table Higgins beginning to play with a little more assurance now and looks good to level it at 4-4. The way he has played this afternoon he will be delighted with that.

Higgins makes it 4-4. The final frame decider between Cahill and Maguire gets underway.

As JV said it is more that Cahill's misses he was shrugging off and forgetting much better than Maguire.

Gritty last frame from Maguire and he wins it comfortably in the end to win 13-12.

No sooner has the dust settled on the Maguire /Cahill match than the evening session gets underway. Mark Williams trails David Gilbert 9-7 - an upward battle for the reigning champion. On the other table a potential classic starts between Judd Trump and Ding Junhui.

Williams wins the first frame of the evening and now trails 9-8. Trump leads Ding 1-0.

David Gilbert staying strong and goes back 10-8 up.

Ding levels it up at 1-1.

Trump goes back into the lead at 2-1.

Lovely clearance from David Gilbert and he now is developing a stranglehold on this match at 11-8. Is the reigning champion Mark Williams on his way out?

Trump wins a frame that Ding looked like he had got in with a good chance in. Trump leads 3-1 at their interval. On the other table David Gilbert is moving closer to the winning line. He looks odds on to go 12-8 up. Williams at the point of no return.

And 12-8 it is to David Gilbert. Looking very calm.

Mark Williams 41 points down but at the table and at the last chance saloon. Miss and he is heading home.

A break of 61 gets him back in the frame but presents Gilbert with a tricky red down the side cushion. But he misses.

Williams takes the frame to stay afloat but still trails 12-9.

Trump takes a scrappy frame to go 4-1 up. To be honest it has been a disappointing match so far.

David Gilbert in with another chance to close out the match here.

That is a great win for David Gilbert. He has beaten the reigning champion Mark Williams 13-9 to reach the QF's for the first time.

Trump running away with this. He looks set to go 5-1 up and Ding is all at sea.

This morning sees two second round matches get underway. Kyren Wilson V Barry Hawkins and Ali Carter V Zhou Yuelong are on the agenda.

I can see Zhou beating Carter and maybe Hawkins beating Wilson.

Zhou off to a good start. He leads Carter 1-0.

Barry Hawkins on a maximum.

He misses the 14th black but he leads 2-0.

Barry Hawkins looking good and leads 3-0. A long-drawn out frame on the other table looks like going to Ali Carter to level at 1-1.

As the London Marathon goes on the second frame on the other table was a marathon in itself. After almost an hour Carter takes the frame to level at 1-1.

Zhou takes the third frame and leads Carter 2-1.

Hawkins hammering in another century break his third of the morning. He leads Kyren Wilson 5-1.

Amazing this from Barry Hawkins. His fourth century of the morning and he goes 6-1 up. Five centuries in total this morning in this match.

Hawkins is producing one of the greatest sessions of all time here. Four centuries (including back-to-back total clearances of 136 and 137 just now, and a maximum attempt which failed on 104) as well as an 80-odd break enroute to his 6-1 lead. And he's been forging these chances himself with quality long potting, too.

Incredible stuff. As good as anything you'll ever see.

Another tactical frame and long which is won by Zhou. They head to their mid-session interval with Zhou leading 3-1 whilst the match on the other table have begun their final match of their session. Zhou and Carter may only get six of their eight frames in.

A scrappy last frame of the session in comparison and Kyren Wilson is getting chances and takes the last frame but trails Barry Hawkins 6-2 in what has been an incredible session.

Zhou now 4-1 up on Carter and in amongst the balls in the next frame.

Top stuff from Hawkins, in a Championship that's so far been high on drama but low on overall quality. Only him and Robertson have played consistently well. Trump's shown flashes, but that's all (now 5-5 with Ding after being 5-1).

In this afternoon's matches John Higgins and Stuart Bingham remain locked together at 6-6. On the other table it is the same score between Trump and Ding though Trump did lead 5-1.

Higgins edges back ahead 7-6 of Bingham. Ding leads Trump by the same score.

Bingham bounces back to level it up at 7-7 with a great century break. Much improved session this on their first which had very scrappy and bitty frames.

Trump levels it up at 7-7. Odd thing that both matches this afternoon are following similar patterns. Trump led 5-1, Bingham led 4-1. Now both matches all square at 7-7.

Higgins wins a very scrappy, tactical frame to go 8-7 up with one frame to play in the session.

Ding takes the next frame and leads 8-7 with a clearance of 60.

Ding looking all set to end his session 9-7 up. Bingham with a golden chance to level it up at 8-8.

Bingham passes up that golden chance. This could be a big steal for Higgins.

But Higgins can't take it. Bingham has the big upper hand in a safety bout.
