QF2 - Match Thread - New Zealand v Ireland - 19/10/19 - K/O 11:15 BST
First topic message reminder :
Thought I'd get these made nice and early for a few reasons - but one being that we're already now looking ahead to the QFs with several teams having finished their group stage, so it's all heating up for the proper knockout stuff...barring any more disruption.
NZ
Team: B Barrett; Reece, Goodhue, Lienert-Brown, Bridge; Mo'unga, Smith; Moody, Taylor, Laulala, Retallick, Whitelock; Savea, Cane, Reid.
Replacements: Coles, Tuungafasi, Ta'avao, S Barrett, Todd, Perenara, Williams, J Barrett.
Ireland
Team: Kearney; Earls, Ringrose, Henshaw, Stockdale; Sexton, Murray; Healy, Best, Furlong, Henderson, James Ryan, O'Mahony; Van der Flier, Stander.
Replacements: Scannell, Kilcoyne, Porter, Beirne, Ruddock, McGrath, Carbery, Larmour.
Venue: Tokyo
Referee: Nigel Owens
AR1: Pascal Gauzere
AR2: Angus Gardiner
TMO: Graham Hughes

This could be a blackout. Ireland are capable of a comeback but probably in the second half.

NZ scarey...as always. Love to think England could beat them next week but not putting money on that
Reckon whoever wins that semi will take the cup.

Has a team ever made up 22 points on the Abs?

Biggest winning margin in a World Cup Quarter-Final was the 49 points that NZ beat the French by four years ago.
Fancy that to be beaten now.

Just see out this half now without conceding another point and then hopefully come out in the second half with more composure.
The All Blacks have been decent but not setting the world alight, Ireland just look disjointed.

Ireland need to stop asking Owens for penalties at every breakdown and focus on the game. Owens will get annoyed and give Ireland nothing.

Penalty reversed....lucky it wasn’t a yellow as well. IMO, nought in it, but with WR clamping down, POM was lucky.

Not really thought about it before but why do two infringements mean the team with the more recent offence loses out? Surely Ire should still get the pen

Think that one was for technical offence (tackle off the ball) being less bad than foul play (POM)MightyQuin wrote:Not really thought about it before but why do two infringements mean the team with the more recent offence loses out? Surely Ire should still get the pen

There was nothing in it. If anything the AB who was cynically lying all over the ball should have been carded. But as you say WR have given their edict and everything else will be ignored.
This has been too easy for NZ. They can pretty much sleep walk into the semi.

Good performance so far from NZ, Ireland just not at the races. Too many unforced errors and the pack sadly just hasnt performed.
Congrats New Zealand and a huge congrats to Schmidt on a really good career for Ireland. Respect Joe.

That first half was men against boys. NZ every time they get the ball they spread it wide, and every player make's ground.
Ireland get the ball they are so close they cannot get the ball out wide at all. Ireland resort to normal Ireland play, pass. pass, wrap around and the kick the ball away.

If Ireland are going to kick from hand I would not mind but it has to be accurate and frankly, its been appalling.
I would bring McGrath on for the start of the second half to at least try and speed up the distribution...

Ireland just need to concentrate on not getting seriously embarrassed now. If they start to chuck it about willy nilly, which is not there game, they will just get picked off and it will become an avalanche.
They just need to try playing the game they are good at without the mistakes and hope NZ ease off.
The game is won now, how much blood do they want?

Only way Ireland are making a comeback here is if three or more Kiwis get red-carded in the opening ten minutes of the second half.
