North Weald Open Alternative budget
North Weald Open alternate
Ok... So the 36 holer at North Weald has now been cancelled (which is a bit of a pain but such is life).
There have been suggestions that perhaps we should get together around the northern M25 area for a game anyway as most of us have already taken the day off and for those travelling accomodation will already have been booked.
So. First up a budget. For those of you coming along select the most appropriate budget for the day. We'll work to the majority I think. In addition drop a comment on the thread to let us know who is intending to be around. Then once we have a rough idea of people and the amount being spent we can look at appropriate tracks.
I've allowed 7 days for voting as we only have three weeks to get this arranged. So lets do this rapidly guys. Also... The funds I am suggesting is for 18 holes rather than a day.

I will be on my own (billy no mates) time of day is unimportant, but food would be good as well.

I'm still on for this. I'm booked into Green Man at Harlow (which I can cancel as long as I can arrange alternative room soonest). I've opted for the 40-50 bracket, but if we're only doing one round then so be it I would lend strength to the bracket below (30 - 40, if votes are ties). I've got a 2for1 voucher at home which is still okay to use if that helps bring the cost down. Most courses that do 2for1s will allow them mid-week it's sunday which is the @rseache. I've got a comprehensive guide at home so if someone can tell me which courses are in the frame I will let you know whether they take vouchers and if so, on which days

Yep, seems so! Pity, it's been really good on here up to now, most threads have been well debated with lots of good, interesting chat.
There is always someone that tries to ruin things for the majority.

Agreed D4S
The weird thing is no one thinks it's funny aside from the WUM themselves. There must be something in it as it seems a fairly popular pastime but you've got to have a pretty boring life....

Guys - if you think we have a WUM problem here on the golf section, go spend a couple of hours in tennis or boxing.
I think you'll soon realize we are very well off here

Davie, it wasn't a criticism!
In fact it's a compliment to the mods and the golfing posters that this guy is the first noticeable WUM.
That said he is definitely one!

I've gone for 30-40, but will pay more if the venue merits it. Does that make any sense? Had a few!

I'm not sure if I have time off work (can someone remind me of the date please?) - I'd love to join you all at this or anohter meet in the near future. I've done internet meetups before in a life before 606v2 and know how good these days can be. If you guys can put up with a higher handicapper (though NOT a slow play or someone who will hold you up - I know when to pick up) then I'm sure it will happen soon that I join you guys for a day out.
Somewhere WEST of London rather than East would suit me better though!

It's looking like 40 quid or so is a good mark to aim for... I'll start looking at tracks for that sort of amount somewhere around the north - northwestern M25.

Re: North Weald Open alternate
Ok.
With a rough budget of around 40 quid (and numbers still to be confirmed) I have located the following around that price.
Verulam golf club
West Herts golf club
Potters Bar golf club
North Middlesex golf club
Gerrards cross golf club
Mill Hill Golf Club
Aldenham Golf Club
Currently I am very tempted by Aldenham. Looks very tree lined. It's in an area which has excellent golfing soil. And it's well within the 40 quid budget.

Aldenham does look nice. Do we know how many of us there'll be? If we can get 12, why not look at a society package? For just over £50 they'll do 36 holes, coffee & biscuits on arrival and lunch.

Re: North Weald Open alternate
I would say no to a society myself as they will likely want a deposit. And with us all being so disparate in location getting that sorted will be a nightmare. Add in a few no shows and someone is going to be out of pocket fairly substantially.... Although I looked at the same thing and was tempted by it. Particularly since I could probably encourage THE RINGER into this....

Re: North Weald Open alternate
Aldenham is ok, it's not great though. Verulam is a very strange course - there's a point where two holes cross, complete with shared fairway and rough and everything. There should be traffic lights!
For a limited budget like that, try Little Hay at Hemel Hempstead. Municipal, quite well maintained, and a reasonable challenge for all abilities.

I've never played any of the above, so I am quite happy to go to any. Strange you would plump for a tree lined course LJ, You really must have sorted your wide drives! :run2:
Actually Aldenham not only is tree lined, but a number of fairways appear to have trees in the middle as well. Looks like fun.

Not really tempted by that. Any club website which has a notice stating that the members have to pay their green fees and that the club isn't responsible sounds a bit dodgy to me. Nothing wrong with a members club at a pay and play but that makes the membership sound a bit dodgy.

They are certainly on the way back Shanker. Played yesterday and even though my iron play was terrible I hit a lot of very very good drivers. There were two very dodgy ones just to keep things in balance however.

Guys
I know we are looking at North side of the M25 but I spotted an advert for Chart Hills at the weekend, they are doing some deals at the moment around the £50 mark. It's southe east side of the M25, about 4o'clock on the clockface.
Just thought I'd mention it as an alternative..........

Sorry to state the obvious but why not play at North Weald still? Presumably they have loads of tee times available now (sorry!) and would welcome the income. And with LJ's no doubt high profile member status a reasonable package could be thrashed out!!

We could do that... but I was thinking of higher quality tracks to be honest.
I can look into it if people are interested in that. Only thing I would say is that I don't like the food there at all. I have the occassional cheese sandwich but that's about it.

Arrghhh - I've just cancelled my accommodation in Harlow based on the fact we weren't going to be playing there. Can we at least decide whether we are doing 18 or 36; if 18 holes then if we tee off at lunchtime those poor bleeders wot gotta travel 2 - 3 hours won't have to stay overnight, we can just rack up in the morning for a reasonable tee-off. If it's 36 holes we're playing then some of us will have to book into accommodation and we'll need to sort it rapido or there will be nothing left; esp with school hols coming up

Re: North Weald Open alternate
The track is perfectly OK as far as I can see - the food I cannot comment on, but sure there must be a nice little Essex boozer reasonably close.
Mind you that will take away the pleasure of a tree lined course and seeing an LJ 'wild one' off the tee, still rising and curling as it crosses the trees and on over adjacent fairway.

that had crossed my mind when the guys came up with the north weald suggestion.
As for the number of holes. I prefer 18. I'm moving house a week later and the rest of the day could be gainfully used with packing.

18 suits me but as NST says, we need to decide fairly pronto! From the votes it looks like 7 plus the ringer, correct?

So how many are there of us?
LJ
OS
NST
El Ringo
D4S
SJ (plus 1 isn't it?)
One more and we would have a couple of nice fourballs there.
And I've told you before LJ - stop bringing religion into every conversation!
You'll be knocking on doors next.

If the ringer were not to play my uncle would probably be interested. He was entered into the day at North Weald anyway so 18 holes would suit him I would imagine.
As for knocking on doors... that's never worked. Boot them down with a size 10 jackboot and a copy of the good book I say.

OK.
If we were to go to North Weald I can suggest this as a potential for something to eat.
The full menu is pretty good... and the Fixed price doesn't look too shabby either.

Re: North Weald Open alternate
Either look fine to me. Got to think of timing if the long travellers are not staying overnight now. D4S said he was staying in Town so that should be OK, but NST is coming and going back to Cheltenham (I think). Maybe a meet up over coffee and a bacon roll and then tee off about 11.30 should finish by about 4.00 then off to the Kings Head, as the Theydon Oak is not open for food after lunchtime until 6.45 and that might mean a rather tiresome trek back.
If we do this, are we going to make a small competition of it?
the management would like to point out that the above is merely a suggestion only and not a pre-requisite

I will refrain from making the obvious remark and say that maybe a fiver a head to cover best stableford, with the proviso that the winner buys the first round.
With your negotiation skills, we should be able to get that back and more on the reduced green fees.
I know that piffling little amount will insult the sensibilities of 'El Ringo', but remember I don't gamble any more....................mind you I don't gamble any less either
