Re: Fantasy Aviva Premiership Season 1 - Homepage
Just a general question to raise some opinions guys. What do people generally think of Dan Lydiate? Hes a fantastic man for the tackle count and leading the defence but offers nothing on attack really. For me he is this generations Joe Worsley! He works in the Welsh backrow because Warburton and Falateu are so well rounded but would he look as good in the English backrow currently. Im not so sure.
I ask this as I was reading a thread on here last night where a Welsh poster stated Ferris would not currently get into the Welsh backrow over Dan Lydiate. On current form Ferris is probably the best BS in the world and is better at all facets of the game then Lydiate. I just can't see the attraction to Lydiate. If I were picking a Lions side Ferris/Croft/SOB would all get in before him for me anyways
What do you guys think?

Think he is a very good player with the best years ahead of him and i agree with you that the wales back row is much greater than the sum of its parts because it has such great balance. Ferris is a beast, wouldn't have many 6s ahead of him in the world to be honest. Dusatoir and Burger are a strong shout, but more like 6.5s and Kaino now injured of course.
Back row all about balance, think England have some real talent in Morgan Wood Robshaw Croft Haskell, but all very similar and therefore, not a great unit as such.

Re: Fantasy Aviva Premiership Season 1 - Homepage
Im just of the opinion if you take Warburton out of that Welsh back row then it falls apart. He is such a well rounded player. When it comes to out and out poaching McCaw/Brussow/Pocock all ahead but as an allround 7 only McCaw betters him. He allows Lydiate to get away with just tackling and tackling and more tackling. If you put Joe Worsley into that Welsh backrow would it perform any different? Was Worsely ever seen as this great world beater? Not by the welsh anyway who gave him an awful slagging just find it quite funny to be honest now

Re: Fantasy Aviva Premiership Season 1 - Homepage
I read the same thread SJE and I could see both sides of the argument.
Ferris is a better player than Lydiate and is definitely 100% a better ball carrier. I do however think that Lydiate is underated by some, his workrate is phenomenal. Individually, Warburton is the only Welsh back row forward that would walk into the English, Irish, French or even Italian back row.
However, the Welsh back row as a unit have just clicked for whatever reason. Would Ferris work as well in the unit? Or would his different game take away from what Warburton and Faletau do? There is unlikely to ever be a conclusive answer to that question unless the Lions back row is Ferris, Warburton, Faletau, and then we will see.
I can see why Welsh posters would say they would not take Ferris over Lydiate right now, as like I said the Welsh back row as a unit, works as well if not better than any other back row in the world right now.

All interesting chats, I'm potentially thinking about back row for my next foreign. Not sure to go for a big 6 to play alongside Louw or a beast of an 8 to control things and play Fearns at 6

SOB?
I'm undecided who I need next. Might go for Pienaar, helpful to have someone who can play 9 and 10.

It's just about balance.
It's an issue I see with some teams on other AP game sometimes. 3 big carrying back rowers although world class isn't always the answer.
Funny how managers from other AP game sign the same players

Re: Fantasy Aviva Premiership Season 1 - Homepage
I agree with what Pete said, Ferris overall is a better 6. However I think if you put him into the Welsh backrow he'd struggle a little because he'd be quite similar in the job that Faletau offers for Wales. But maybe Ferris offers a little more ball carrying out wide.
I've always looked at combinations in the backrow, I like teams that put out a good balance with the archetypal plays in particular positions. But if the backrow was collection of players in the mould of the so called 6.5's where they could all do the jobs of a backrow unit, I wouldn't mark it down as such, so along as they've trained together and well implemented in the tactics.

Gorgodze, forgotten about him again! Not sure if he would be rated highly enough on here though to be honest. Gutted about Schalk Burger's injury, I would have been tempted with him, so consistent and physical. More gametime for Willem Alberts though I guess, especially with Smith always injured.
Last foreign of the season, got to make sure I get it right. Also bit concerned that during 3Ns I might lose 3 key players each week!

the 3N now makes it less tempting to go for SH players. wont they miss the first 2/3 months of the season?

Starts mid August till the 1st week of October Nick (I think). Then there's the autumn internationals. Overall they miss about the same time as 6 nations players so its all about squad balance really

Just watching Brumbies/Cheetahs, great running rugby from both. Brussow is in awsome form at the minute. Just causes so much damage at breakdown, seems to have adapted to the rules better than Pocock

I'll still rate Kaino very highly, only been overtaken by Ferris. Think Kaino will still hold ratings for the rest of this season for me, but after that it will drop off I reckon

Shame it's got a gash football team occupying it.
They want to move down our neck of the woods because besides Blaydon and Tynedale were the hot bed of Rugby Union in the North east.
1.Graham Rowntree
2.?????
3.Micky Ward
4.Tom Palmer
5.Geoff Parling
6.Tom Croft
7.Phil Dowsen
8.????
9.Micky Young
10.Toby Flood
11.Rory Underwood
12.Jamie Noone

Just a colston college team would be pretty useful to be honest!
"Colston's went on a 14-year undefeated home run against English teams, from 1994 until Hartpury College won in 2008."

On current form I'd have Ferris best in the world right now! Hence I signed him!! Him and Kaino are a class above everyone else at BS at the moment. Would have Juan Smith up there too but lack of game time is a killer
Kaino will be fine the rest of the season Flux mate. Will still get a world class rating from me. Could struggle for form come the autumn internationals next season though unless he makes it back for them

These "best in world" tags come and go with whoever is having Int comps (6n/4n).
Kaino was excellent in WC & Ive seen nothing to suggest Ferris is better than that so unable to put him up there. I rate Ferris highly but until he proves himself against the SH sides I don't think he deserves the "best" tag tbh.
On a side note, what's happened to Heaslip over the years?? Seems to have really dropped off.
