Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
Yes Billy,
Western Suburbs Magpies - the club was in Enmore (near Canterbury - part of 'inner city') and they played at Lidcombe Oval which is further out west along Parramatta Rd (in between Balmain & Parra). The NSW Cup side still plays their games there. Similarly, the Newtown Jets or Bluebags play their home games at Henson Park which is also nearby.
Balmain Tigers - The Club is in Balmain, played at Leichhardt Oval. NSW Cup side is still identical to the old Balmain Tigers. Wests also have their own Western Suburbs Magpies team in the NSW Cup. Both these sides then feed into the Wests-Tigers now.
When they combined to form the Wests-Tigers they built the new clubhouse at Campbelltown (50km from CBD) and play most home games there - miles away from both original clubs on the road towards Canberra.
So effectively their catchment is huge. In between Cronulla, Saints, Canterbury, Souths - and all areas in between and out towards Parramatta and Penrith...which is 60km west from the centre of Sydney and Canberra (to the south-west).
Illawarra / Wollongong area was always a traditionally strong RL nursery for players. Produced many legends of the game. Saints used to draw heavily on those players.
Then in about '82/'83 the Illawarra Steelers became an ARL club in their own right.
Lastly, the club struggled financially and the joint venture was formed with St-George. Home games are played at either Kogarah Oval which is now called WIN Jubilee Oval (near where you stayed in Sans Souci) or down (the escarpment) in Wollongong at WIN Stadium.

Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
The Oaks and Camden area is where the earliest Irish settlers became wealthy land owners... after they had served their sentence of course.
...and were then given free land.
Little did they know they were sitting on some fairly decent pasture land. The original land holdings they were given would be worth a very tidy sum indeed today!
However, it's been constantly subdivided and split up into smaller and smaller land portions.
Like you say though, there's some really nice country in that area and probably some of our oldest history.

OK.
So now we know where the term "off the sheep's back" originated.
Tony Robinson did some research on his ancestors and discovered something similar. His ancestors had choice bits of land right in the centre of the Camden. He was flabbergasted to say the least.

You just had to get a sheep shagging pun in didnt you
I have descendants at Camden, The Oaks, Bringelly and loads in Tamworth.
I have only met one family in The Oaks though as they were close decendants. They all dropped the O' before the name though which is strange.

Final scores so far.
It remained 12-4 to St George, strangely disallowed try for Newcastle
Brisbane thrashed Canberra 30-6

Storm 12 Bulldogs 6. It was a very tight game with some tough defence from both sides.
There was a controversial penalty to the Storm when the Dogs had a scrum feed 10m out from the posts in the dying staqes of the game.

At half time:
Gold Coast 12 Manly 8
Cowboys 28 Roosters 0
I didn't realise they are playing the Chooks-Cowboys match up in Darwin.
I thought "TIO" was just another new name for the SFS, Aussie Home Loans, Allianz Stadium, etc. Good to see the game played in NT though.
Darwin must be a tough place to play even though it's now officially in the dry season. It's 29 deg with 80% humidity currently.
Max 34 today. They have a special cool room for the players.

Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
Full time:
Gold Coast 26 Manly 14 *
Nth Qld 50 Roosters 12
* it must have been the Country RL socks they wore in honour Kingy's 200th game.
No seriously, Manly were simply out-enthused and out-played.
It was Cherry-Evan's first loss at Brookvale Oval.

Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
I think Darwin suited the boys from Townsville a lot more than the boys from Bondi junction.
I know all teams suffer and have to put up with injuries, but the loss of Campese is going to be a big problem for the Raiders.

Now you know how us poor 'roaches feel, laurie. It's scary isn't it?
You're right about Darwin. It would have suited the Cowboys. NT is also the 'backyard' of Qld in terms of RL followers.

This is a cockroach set up,you guys just want us to soften then up and then you guys will come along in a couple of weeks and ambush them while theyre beaten up.
OR the more likely scenario,The Queenslanders will use the test as a training run.

Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
ha, NZ should be a decent hit out.
The first SOO is at Etihad so it's like a home game for Qld.
I expect NSW to lose their 7th series in a row.

2004... when they beat the Roosters.
They had that horror season in 2002 when they were docked 37 points for salary cap breaches despite winning 20 games.

Cheers breaker, i was there when Jiffy signed for them. That was a huge signing, i never got to see if he did any good though as i had left just after he signed.
When i was back in 97/98 they were also a very good team.

Cronulla look better than ever (for them; apart from the late 90s with the Super League split and they made the GF... only to be thumped by Brisbane)
They're probably my 2nd favourite NRL side. I hope they do well this year.

Re: 2012 NRL Premiership: Results and Table
The Anzac Test is on Friday night... 7:30pm kick off, not on the weekend as I stated above.
Can't wait - a war of words has begun regarding the 'reception committee' for the young 116kg Tamou.
It sounds funny when other players say on his behalf: "you're welcome to have a crack at him... but the kid can hold his own."

Final Score:
Kangaroos 20 - 12 Kiwis
Good game. NZ scored first. It was much closer than the experts had predicted.

NSW have won the inaugural U20 State of Origin (Darren Lockyer Shield) beating Queensland 18-14.
Nail-biting final minutes with Qld pressing on the line with 3 repeat sets after the baby Blues kept coughing the ball up.

City beat Country 24-22 this afternoon after being up 24-0 before half time.
Carney had a blinder... Haynes not so good, threw an intercept pass which started the comeback.
Blake Ferguson and Tariq Sims also played well for Country and Mitchell Pearce and Steve Turner had good games for City.

Dragons defeated the Roosters 28-24. A very late comeback after the Chooks were leading 24-18 with not long to go.

Yesterday, the Melbourne Storm finished strongly to beat the NZ Warriors 32-14... a flattering score considering it was 14 all with not long to go.
