Barrel's Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub & Restaurant, Luderitz
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has stayed in Africa this week as part of its build up to the Heineken Cup final, and attached itself to Barrels restaurant in Luderitz, Namibia, known for its beer, Eisbein and sing-a-longs.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Simon Danielli, Federico Aramburu and the possibly Auckland-bound Joe Schmidt.

WALES TRAINING SQUAD FOR BARBARIANS AND AUSTRALIA TOUR 2012
Wales caretaker head coach Rob Howley today named four uncapped players in a 38-man training squad which will prepare to face the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, 2 June, before embarking on a three-Test tour of Australia.
Howley will officially gather his troops for the first time on Monday, 21 May, with the exception of Ospreys players who will have the full weight of the Wales national squad behind them as they bid for RaboDirect Pro12 glory in the competition final the following Sunday.
Scarlets players’ player of the year, full-back, Liam Williams, his regional team-mate, prop Rhodri Jones, Ospreys centre Ashley Beck and Blues wing Harry Robinson (promoted from the Wales U20 squad) are the four uncapped players named, although all four have figured in previous national squads – as recently as the 2012 Grand Slam winning RBS 6 Nations campaign in the case of Williams and Robinson.
Back in contention – called up from outside of this season’s all conquering 6 Nations squad - are Ospreys backs Dan Biggar, fly half, and Andrew Bishop, centre, Scarlets flanker Josh Turnbull and Dragons wings Aled Brew and Will Harries, alongside Blues flanker Martyn Williams who is set to win his 100th cap against the Baa-Baas.
“The Ospreys will have our full backing in their bid for silverware in a fortnight’s time so we will not be asking them to join us until a week after everyone else,” said Howley.
“They are playing very well at the moment, a win in the final would be a great starting point for our own campaign this summer and the call ups for both Dan (Biggar) and Andrew (Bishop), in particular, reflect the good form the Ospreys are in.
“Elsewhere we have been pretty consistent with selection, it’s now down to these players to pick up where we left off in the 6 nations and prove to us that they should be on that plane to Australia.
“We hope to get the summer off to a winning start against the Baa-Baas and everyone who figures in that game will be playing for a place on the tour.”
Whilst Wales’ Ospreys contingent will not be in camp until Monday 28th May, Howley is confident he will have a full strength squad to choose from by the time he comes to select his side to face the Baa-Baas, with his overseas contingent available and fitness worries over certain players abating.
“Both Mike (Phillips) and James (Hook) will be with us from the start, Sam (Warburton) is still on track and we are optimistic that both Jonathan Davies and Scott Williams will have reached full fitness and be able to play their part in the tour,”added Howley
“We have a tough series ahead of us with five matches in four weeks and two games in two separate Hemispheres in the space of seven days, but we are fully focussed on the prize of that elusive Southern Hemisphere scalp.”
Clermont Auvergne fullback Lee Byrne is not selected as he is still likely to be involved in domestic competition in France right up to the date the tour party leaves (the Top 14 players Final, for which his club are still in contention, will be held on 9th June), however, he will remain on standby for the tour.
Unavailable due to injury are Blues centre Jamie Roberts and Ospreys hooker Huw Bennett.
Wales’ fourth capped meeting with the Barbarians (the Baa-Baas currently lead the series 2-1) will be sponsored by Under Armour under the tagline – ‘Wales v Barbarians, powered by Under Armour’ – it was announced today. Also confirmed this morning is the mid-week fixture on tour between Wales and the ACT Brumbies, who are leading the Australian Conference in the southern hemisphere provincial championship. Wales play three Tests against Australia in Brisbane on June 9, Melbourne on June 16 and Sydney on June 23 and will take on the Super 15 provincial team at Canberra Stadium on June 12 to complete their largest ever one-nation tour.

The ending is very condescing about isn't it wonderful that the sectarian nature of Ulster rugby isnt the main thing anymore . . . . .its only in the background now.

Re: Barrel's Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub & Restaurant, Luderitz
I'm stunned at some of these comments:
However, here’s the thing: it might not seem so judged by how the two extremist – or should that be fundamentalist – political parties dominate in the North, but there’s a middle-class there too that doesn’t hang out in Windsor or Casement but have taken the Ulster rugger team to their hearts. Even the Taigy well-to-dos, you know, the ones pretty okay with the status quo and who’re no shoo-ins to vote nationalist when the great pick-your-side numbers game is ultimately played.
......
Right now there’s a lot more to the Ulster rugby set-up than the traditional image of bowler-hatted suspicion. There’s Rory McIlroy on the sidelines for example. And nearly as many fenians on the side as there are South Africans.
None of which means the centuries of built-in prejudice have gone away.
At least, though, they aren’t absolutely to the forefront anymore. Instead there’s more than a hint of normalcy. And how refreshing is that.

Can excuses for journalists like him not be prosecuted under incitement to religious hatred act (2006) or should we just pity him in all his glorious ignorance and misinformation?

Interesting comments by Afoa on the youth developement in Ireland v NZ:

“You see these kids in the Academy, two years out of school, but they could slip into the All Blacks or play at whatever level and be able to handle themselves.
“They’re not just doing weights for the first time when they go to the Academy; they’ve been doing weights for five or six years through school. They’ve had all the training and they’ve done all the work so now they’re ready to play professional rugby.

Nice to see a southern journalist not use the phrase 'south african mercenaries' in an article about Ulster though. Now that IS refreshing.

I think what is worst Willy is that the article is aimed at the supporters, not the club or players.... clearly the journo is out to stir up division and tension not just between the Ulster and Leinster supporters but also within Ulster supporters and to undermine Ulsters cross community support and image.
Its a very sinister and nasty piece of propaganda.

You know for years, the more excitable and cynical Ulster fans have complained that the southern press has been 'biased against' or even 'bigoted towards' Ulster, and by and large it's a load of absolute shoite, bitter garbage spewed forth by eejits.
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/0514/1224316063790.html
Brian O'Connor, however, is a bigot. His comments about the Northern Ireland football team have the uncomfortable ring of truth to them but his comments about Ulster Rugby and Ulster Rugbys support base are sadly bigoted and out of date. That's what happens when you allow prejudice to get in the way of reality. We've been working hard to be a team for everyone in Ulster, the only sporting team that truly is above sectarianism in this part of the world, and we get rewarded by Irelands largest newspaper printing that. Well done Irish Times
We're not just the sum total of 'bowler-hatted suspicion' and 'taigy well to dos', we're one united fanbase across literal and metaphorical borders behind one united team. If there were less Brian O'Connors in Ireland, maybe our national team would have a chance of being even remotely similar instead of a ragtag collection of quarrelling tribes.

Notch I couldn't have and didn't put it any better myself. Why this parasite is allowed to feed of the blood of the Irish Times is beyond all reason. Perhaps said paper needs to rid themselves of those filled with one-eyed hatred.

Stag, Pete
It's just ironic is all. He gives us a condescending pat on the head for 'normalcy'; if the Irish national teams supporters and players were as united as Ulsters, we'd be in a much better place as a rugby nation.

It's just ironic is all. He gives us a condescending pat on the head for 'normalcy'; if the Irish national teams supporters and players were as united as Ulsters, we'd be in a much better place as a rugby nation.
Well said bud. Sure look at what we are all doing at the weekend. It totally contradicts every word of it all. In real Life.
The goy is an imbecile.
Don't feed it any more. Lets get on with how WE know it IS.
Believe.

But there are older fans (not as enlightened as you) who were tapping their hand on their breakfast table in agreement as they read it. As they munched on white pudding and soda bread with shamrock jam they were thinking "good on our Brian, for having the guts to tell it as it is"

There's nobody older than Rava and he wasn't tapping anything in agreement.

Ya stirrin, Welsh, Sheep-shaggin, Nationalist ya!
The soccerball fans (not all mind) will lap that article up.
Its food for pond-life, bottom-feeders. Id expect it from the SUN or the Sunday Wudild. The Irish Times? Cant believe it was let through by the Editor.
They must need the sales badly. I'm not talking about it anymore. Leave it Shadwell!

Afternoon all
Am back in the land of TV's and decent internet connections after a wonderful break away with the family. Have not seen any rugby, but note that both the AP and Rabo finals will be between the expected participants.
Leinster for the double?

Yes, yes, yes. I only wish I could make it to HQ to stir some more. We'll be having none of this cosy inter provincial compromise, ta very much (although I would be a lot more tasteful and subtle than Mr B O'Connor)

It's the elephant in the room man, the elephant in the room.
As long as people buy into this tribal, parochial, small minded tripe, and many do, big Georgie North and the English scrum is going to keep pushing us around the place.
Only when we're all ready to stand shoulder to shoulder for real .... fans, media and players..... will we add to our embarressing return of 2 GSs and break our RWC hoodoo....

Anyone else hear that Scarlets are releasing a blue European Cup kit for next year.
Head of Marketing, Hefin Alaff noted that "the rugby public is used to seeing success in blue in recent years. Leinster have been a pillar of this competition while the Cardiff Blues are the only Welsh team to have won a Euorpean Cup". It is hoped that the blue kit will influence the players and fans on a subliminal level . . . . .
