Scotland can mount a serious challenge for the No1 spot and the 2015 RWC
As a Scotland fan I'm happy that we had the best tour record of the NH teams, this is a huge achievement for such a new team and coaching set up.
But lets be honest we should have beaten Australia by a couple of tries.
As an Scotland fan we should be aiming higher than 8th, we could mount a serious challenge for the No1 spot and the 2015 RWC IMO. Aus, SA, England, Wales, France, Argentina, Ireland and NZ are there for the taking.
As an Scotland fan I want to see my team do all the performing on the pitch and not just talking a good game off which seems to satisfy some countries fans.
Every game, in every way, we're getting better and better.

God I wish I could agree haha.
I think we should be aiming for 6th again though, that'd be nice tbh.
Our under-20s are looking hot on the tries so it's not all grim, but I can't see us conquering the rugby world. I can however see us competing for the 6N title next year if we get the consistency going!

The fact that people don't mind us joking around is that they don't see it us a threat.
If this were an ENG post I think all the welsh posters would strike in protest of the sites apparent bias
I'd love us to get back to our peak in the late 80s/early 90s when we were uber competitive and played exciting rugby which everyone around the world respected.

Not true, I have seen a number of posters reckoning their teams can get to 1, hence why not Scotland.fa0019 wrote:The fact that people don't mind us joking around is that they don't see it us a threat.

Anything is possible, even if a little unrealistic! Nothing wrong with aiming high - i'd settle for us aiming to win each game at a time

Well we have the smallest playing numbers of the 6N & 4N.. in fact the USA have more people regularly playing rugby than ourselves.
Although not an definitive pattern but generally speaking, the more people, the more kids we get playing playing the better our chances in the future.
In the next 5 years I can see us sneaking a 6N, getting into a RWC QF and competing for the SF... and most importantly, turning Murrayfield into a fortress like it was 20 years ago. That would be beyond most of our wildest dreams if it came true.
We don't need to make unrealistic goals... but ones which are not beyond our reach if we believe in ourselves.

Hmm it appears people aren't taking this as seriously as the "England can mount a serious challenge for the No1 spot and the 2015 RWC" thread, all sensible comments so far.

I think the next 5 years will mark a special scotland side. I don't expect to win the world cup or be ranked above 4th but I still think we'll be very competitive.

I think the crop coming through now will be similar to the Irish generation of O'Driscoll, O'Connell etc. but let's be honest whilst Matt Scott, Tom Brown, Stuart Hogg etc. are good players do they have the power of the All Blacks? I believe fully that by 2015 Scotland will have won the grand slam but the World cup will be a step too far I think and will remain so until we have four pro teams and a larger player base hopefully this will come with the demise of Rangers.

+ 1.
Whatever you do, do NOT draw with England. They will try and claim it as win.

They'll claim it as being better than a narrow loss. Which it is.

I have watched Scotland rugby for long time and this is the best group of young players we have ever had in that time - compared to other countries as well as compared to scots teams of the past. They won't lose the narrow games next year. They will be more experienced and older and better. but - they have to win games. In another year we will know - a couple of wins in the Autumn and more in the six nations with a place in the top eight in the rankings is not impossible

Re: Scotland can mount a serious challenge for the No1 spot and the 2015 RWC
I do love this thread, but alas any sensible Scotsman knows that we're never going to be number 1 in the world in our lifetime!
However, I do think we should be aiming high and a 6N title within 5 years and grand slam within 10 years is a must. 10 years will span the entire career or Denton, Scott, Hogg, Brown, Jones, Gray, Gilchrist, Weir, Fusaro etc so why the hell not.
First things first though - baby steps. We simply must win 3 games this 6N. I'd maybe accept 2 and being very competitive in the others, but we must beat Italy and at least Ireland or Wales (preferably Wales! )

Agree that winning the 6Ns within 10 years is vital to a resurgence of Scottish rugby. I definitely wouldn't accept 2 wins though this time around, it'd just be the same old if that were the case. I think 3+ is acceptable by this point especially if our Autumn tests are successful (we have a good chance to win 2 out of 3 if the boys put their mind to it).
Time to convert promise into delivery!
