The Zone Virtual Sports Bar, Hamilton.
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Zone Sports Bar, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in Sky City Hamilton, where the Crusaders take on the Chiefs in the Super XV semi final.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Bradley Wiggins, Ernie Els, Irene van Dyk, Sonny Bill Williams and his newly capped All Black team mate Sam Cane.
Previous pub. https://www.606v2.com/t32740-the-dew-drop-inn-virtual-rugby-pub-bridgend

Thinking back to RWC 2011 (being the MTV generation means that as far back as I can remember at all. Even thats a struggle ) it was more about the sport itself and not the hosts as much. This is more about the host country than the Olympics themselves. It's more a celebration of Britain, of Britains history, than something symbolising the ethos of the Games themselves. Is it normally like this with Olympic opening ceremonies? I honestly can't remember. These things rarely stick in my mind.
And this one, to be fair to Danny Boyle, will. Especially the bit with Noel Mannion
You don't remember Beijing Notch or Sydney?
Yeah. it's all about the hosts as a rule, maybe it's just skewed because of the terms of reference are more "broad" yet "familiar" this time around?

That is essential. Got to say, it's really improved as it's gone on. The first section with the sheep et al. was a bit hit and miss. Villains of childrens literature- awesome. Classic British Rock Music- awesome.

I missed that but there were two cases of sheep rustling in Co. Antrim this week. Over 300 stolen from two farms in the Antrim Hills.
Any significance?

I love all the irreverent look at it's own culture through history - papering over the cracks film & music. We'll have all the sport soon.
Sydney 2000 broke the traditional OC mould celebrating 'the people' - Athens was a bit of a blur for me, Beijing was all about their 'ancient culture'. This one is even more informal & looser than Syd - warts and all, highs & lows. Perfect way to set the scene before the serious stuff starts.

Yeah, there were a few gaps in that history lesson eh? The rumours about a puppet of a giant hoodie in a mask bursting into the stadium and making off with the big screen were unfounded right enough
I like the parade bit, all the teams. Class.
