Olympics Day 14
First topic message reminder :
I'm going to a wedding tomorrow. Talking about weddings, a 25th is normally silver. But not in these Olympics. We are now on 25 Golds, safe in 3rd place, and make no doubt it, this has been our most successful Games ever, period. And truth be told, these are also the best Games ever, even topping Sydney. They are nearly over, but we can still add to our gold total - both 470s go in their medal race, Lisa Dobriskey in the 1500m, Shanaze Reade in the BMX, Sarah Stevenson in Taekwondo and I'm sure much more surprises on the way!

I think that if someone asks for their medal to be credited to ireland, the right thing to do would be to honour his wishes would it not? Its only sport at the end of the day.dummy_half wrote:LeinsterFan4life wrote:I know dummy thats why i said it would never happen. I think it would be impossble to credit a medal to a country that didn't exist at the time of the competition, regardless of the political situation. If the IOC were to do that for Ireland, they'd open such a can of worms regarding the former Soviet and Yugoslav states that it just can't happen. It may be disappointing for the individuals involved, but it's the only reasonable way to proceed.

Once we've won the hockey, it'll be 2 Silver and 2 Bronze today for GB.

Not if they won it competing for someone else

Always going to happen, one of the most sure fire bets in Athletics these days. Which is why I put 50 quid on it
As for that US 4X100m Run....WOW Just WOW!! That was probably the 4 best bits of running in these Olympics and that includes Bolt!

Haha...I said the other day, I even offered money for someone to take him out but no contract killers were around on the board on the day!!...
He is bloody awful, if any presenter is a one trick pony it's him. He knows a little bit about Rugby but has seemingly traded off that and managed to get his face on every other Sports show/tournament etc...
The man is clueless and stumbles his way through every sentence. Im struggling to decide who is worse him or Adrian Chiles...

Re: Olympics Day 14
Him and Colin Jackson together makes me want to cry. Should have got Claire Balding down there! Considering she had no background in swimming, her presenting has probably been the best so far.

Big Chance?! Not sure....that was painful to watch. If their is a way to run the wrong race that was it,,,not quite sure what she was doing their to be honest. Be interesting to see what her thoughts are on that.
Re: Olympics Day 14
I really hated Clare Balding at first but her quality as a presenter have grown on me and i would much rather her than Inverdale.

In fairness, given Dobriskey's times leading up to the Olympics, i thought that she had a big chance of a medal.

Re: Olympics Day 14
Eire - I know what you mean but as I have said a few times, especially with regards to swimming, competing on the European circuit and competing at the Olympics are an entirely different thing.
If you look at alot of our middle to long distance runners very few are capable tactically in a race. Most are very naive and either won't take the lead and set out a tactic they want running...or they don't seemingly have the nouse to switch up the tactics during the race....
As soon as the group were boxing Lisa should have been moving out wide, even if it meant covering that little extra distance it would have meant she would have been up on the curtail of the group with 500 left...as it was she was left floundering really.
That is why i give Mo so much credit because he has moved to America and does training camps out in Africa where he is able to run against the best, train with the best & ultimately be able to complete both from a physical & mental stand point.

Possibly one of the most astute points i have read during the Olympics.

Re: Olympics Day 14
ah ok fair enough...you never know with this board!!
It was a very frustrating 1500m to watch, very dour & the winner certainly left a sour taste in the mouth.
I have been covering quite alot of the games as I do sports journalism, so it is good that I know my stuff (although that is rare even in my surroundings sadly)...plus I used to run 1500m so have an interest in it.
It's funny because if you look at alot of our sports it is the same story....plenty of effort, heart, determination & even athleticism....but tactically and technically very many are poor...
That is a problem, IMO, which needs to be sorted at the bottom of the ladder in schools & youth sports clubs. Without the changes at that grass roots level it will remain to be the case for many years to come..
It is at a young age kids are like a sponge and will soak up the information/coaching methods taught...once they reach that junior age i.e. 16 upwards it becomes much more difficult to implement changes.

Dobriskey disappoints again! So talented, it's such a shame.
I don't know what planet she's on, but way too happy in that interview. She's a lovely girl but not a competitive athlete.

I don't think Dobriskey's chances were ever that high, having watched the heats. She should at least have run a better tactical race though.
Overall today was very disappointing. No golds despite a whole host of chances - Sailing x2, BMX x2, Taekwondo x2 - and none of the outsiders knicking a medal in the Athletics.

I think he's only a posterboy for the Olympics because of his looks. A bit like Ennis being a postergirl because of her looks, but at least Ennis showed ability.

I think it's a combination of doing so well at the Beijing Olympics at 14, and then becoming a teenage girl heartthrob that have made him so hyped. He's very easily marketable.

A 14 year old Olympian is quite impressive though, was world number 1 at 16.
Think all of the photoshoots might have caused a distraction since.

Re: Olympics Day 14
Freek & Duty..he certainly has been a little hyped but I wouldn't give him to much criticism.
He is actually probably 2-3 years away from being anywhere near peak for diving. For his age he has done incredibly well in almost all major competitions...bar the Olympics actually.
What you have to remember is that he actually only recently increased the execution of some of his dives. In fact it was only 18 months ago he could even begin practicing the more difficult 'execution' dives....
I do think being a poster boy has hindered him in the build up to these games...and you have to admit..if you were his age and you had everyone saying your an Olympic medallist in waiting etc you would probably be a little overwhelmed with the pressue..
The funniest thing is that the media have hyped him for a Gold even though the young Chinese lads have had every competition wrapped up in the last 2 years!!

For the semis, he'll have to make the top 12 to make the Final which will require a massive improvement. I think he'll make the final but he won't medal. And fellow Brit Waterfield hasn't made the semis.

Yeh I hope that the nerves are all out of the way now and he just gets out and blocks everything out and gets on with it tomorrow.
He has had scores of 565 & 547 in 2012 so if it all comes to together he certainly has the potential to medal.

Can't say I know anything about boxing, was just going on the rankings. I know it doesn't work that way all the time, but I assumed as the world number 2, having beaten the world number 1 he'd be favourite for the final...guess not.

Haha, the ranking's can be deceptive in Amateur boxing. Only judge on your performances on ranking tournaments over a two year period. There hasnt been a ranking tournament this year so they are all based on 2011 performances.
As of now, all but two World number ones have been eliminated, I think.

Sapiyev will start as fav, but with the crowd behind him, Evans most definately has a chance .
Campbell v Nevin could go either way, although I'd fancy Campbell to shade it.Joshua will beat Cammarelle to win at least one Gold.
If GB manage 2 of the 3, I'd be happy.
Thorpe, gay as a badger.Enough already.
