Olympics Last Day
Well, it's finally here. The day when the Games of the XXXth Olympiad, London 2012, draws to a close. We will finish 3rd in the medal table, what an achievement for a nation like ours. It's our finest performance in the modern era and dare I say ever, when you consider London 1908. These are the greatest Olympic Games ever, even topping the Games of Sydney, which takes some doing. We have a chance of hitting the 30 Golds now, with Anthony Joshua and Fred Evans and Mhairi Spence in the Modern Pentathlon.
We then have the Closing Ceremony to look forward to, and then the Olympics shall be over, and the athletes of the world shall depart to their homelands some with gold medals, but all with a tale to tell their grandchildren. And then, our Olympians shall return back to their hometowns, leaving behind memories that we all have shared in. Things will now eventually return to normal, just as they were before. But we will never forget this.
Thank you Olympians, for making me proud of my country. Thank you.

It's always an event of such enormity you never quite know what to do once it's over. Saying that I don't feel like it's been 4 years since Beijing and as we build up to Rio, it will come around just as quickly.

Re: Olympics Last Day
These have been a truly fantastic Olympic Games.
Just a word of warning from my own experience at Sydney 2000.
The final day will quickly peter out and final medal tallies counted then the Closing Ceremony will begin. That is when it really hits you (Londoners especially) and you'll feel so proud of what has been achieved and the way it has been run. There have been so many memorable moments.
Then as the Brazilians do their little piece and the flame is extinguished - you might feel very emotional about it all. Don't worry... just keep smiling.
Also, in the coming days and weeks you might hear a few cynics start to say things like "what has it done for me"... "the economy is still touch & go" and "well, that was money well spent" (sarcastically).
Just ignore them and keep your chin up. In the years to come, I'm sure most of you (hosts) will have the very best memories of these wonderful Games and you should all feel very proud you were all a part of it.

They are 3rd.
It's always done by Gold medals won; not overall medals won.

Re: Olympics Last Day
Seeing as there is a bit of confusion here, im going for my own system to rank the medals.................
10 points for gold,
7 for silver
4 for bronze
That gives GB 461 points
Russia have 513 points
Russia officially 3rd according to my system.
When Lord Coe hears this i think he will immediately order an Inquiry into Team GB's pathetic performance!

You are right it doesn't matter that much. If you are from GB, sure these have been an outstanding Olympics and fantastic performance from your athletes. But I am Irish quite frankly it has been not very memorable at all for us.

No confusion John. You can do what ever you want.. What ever makes you feel good.
I couldnt imagine wasting my time creating a table with immaterial rules that doesnt even have any bearing on my own country. You must be very bored wee one!
But if you think Gb was pathetic your on another planet!

Envious, not jealous. There is a difference. I am more envious of the USA team though. I say congratulations to the GB team. I have no resentment at all towards them.

I'll take it that my system is the most fair so................i mean according to the one Linebreaker put up, a team with 1 Gold and no other medals would outrank a team with no gold 10 silvers and 5 bronze.............
Im going all the way with this and get the IOC to adopt it as the propor way of ranking the Medals Table!!!!
Well done GB on a good 4th place though, no improvement on Beijing but theres always Rio.....

The Medals table has always been done in order of Gold Medals won. That way it rewards first-place finishes. GB have finished 3rd.

Re: Olympics Last Day
John Gregan the offical way of ranking originally was actually 4 for gold , 2 for silver and 1 for brinze- then they scraped the offical table because they couoldnt be bothered to promote national competition.
But if your gonna make these weightings up then anyone can also do that and we can just manipulate the data. better to just stick to the system the majorirty of the world uses- which is per gold. But all the same what does it matter unless you have an issue with GB offcourse, Russia rank us above them- maybe thats something you should think about!

I think you're overreacting mysti, he only asked a question.
It's not like the medals table actually means anything, you don't "win the Olympics". Unless you're a big country, the medals table means very little.

Mysti, you've been banned only recently for similar things that you're doing right now. So I suggest you just stick to discussing things rather than creating more animosity and problems, otherwise I'm sure the moderation team will only give you a longer ban this time.

You're just responding a little aggressively.
Somebody only asked as to why GB were third when Russia have more overall medals, which is a perfectly valid question to ask.
Another poster has already pointed out that you created a lot of animosity in the thread. If a post does wind you up, just don't rise to it.

Stop arguing about 3rd/4th place. The Russian Federation occupies two continents, to even be having this debate shows how well we've done.
There's more to the games than the medal table anyway.

You've still got a welterweight boxing one Fred Evans v a Kazak.
A couple of Americans have dropped out of the Marathon - Wilson Kiprotich still in the lead... a bunch of 7 or so not far behind. Cracking pace from 2:09:00 down to around 2:06:00 to 2:07:00 pace, trying to burn the others off.
