Olympics Last Day
First topic message reminder :
Well, it's finally here. The day when the Games of the XXXth Olympiad, London 2012, draws to a close. We will finish 3rd in the medal table, what an achievement for a nation like ours. It's our finest performance in the modern era and dare I say ever, when you consider London 1908. These are the greatest Olympic Games ever, even topping the Games of Sydney, which takes some doing. We have a chance of hitting the 30 Golds now, with Anthony Joshua and Fred Evans and Mhairi Spence in the Modern Pentathlon.
We then have the Closing Ceremony to look forward to, and then the Olympics shall be over, and the athletes of the world shall depart to their homelands some with gold medals, but all with a tale to tell their grandchildren. And then, our Olympians shall return back to their hometowns, leaving behind memories that we all have shared in. Things will now eventually return to normal, just as they were before. But we will never forget this.
Thank you Olympians, for making me proud of my country. Thank you.

We don't have a 7s side so we won't be competing in it more than likely
I think you are naive if you think Rory McIlroy or Graham McDowell will want to step on to the podium and listen to the Soldier's Song.
Could see McDowell doing it, Rory maybe not. McDowell has competed for Ireland and I think Rory has, they should both have to in my view as GUI members. However, will support them if the decide to go for GB.

We have had this debate before- and i am sure its gonna raise its heads 10's if not hundreds of times over the next 4 years. So i dont wanna get involved in it at present- But whoever the NI lads pick I am not bothered in the slightest. And no golf fan will be either..

Do you know the final score Oakey? Agree, I would be disappointed not to see them turn out for Ireland but it's their choice and I will cheer them on. Still Irish at heart like

Well Mcilroy looking to grab his second major in the PGA. things are going very well fo him there.Golf in the olympics could just end up being more hassle than its worth if i am gonna be honest!
I do think Ireland should get involved in 7's though.. It is becoming a decent sport and many countries are getting involved

It was either keep Connacht alive or support 7s. Connacht was voted which probably makes more sense, we are suited to play it but won't be at Rio anyway. Maybe 2020 in Tokyo (I think they get it).
Basketball is not live, but won't ruin the result.

These 2 weeks have flown by, I don't want it to end! Hopefully London will get the Games again in 30 or 40 years time and inspire another generation.

That is very true, the competition will increase for it in the developing World. Rio in 2016. Delhi, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Istanbul are all possibles for the 2020 Olympics.

Re: Olympics Last Day
When you think we had major gold hopes like Cav, Pendleton, Idowou, Greene, Brabants and others for various reasons falling short it really shows the depth the Olympic team has now. Medals in 17 different sports, more golds than Beijing and Athens combined. There still plenty of other daft sports we could invest in, lots of medals in shooting, archery, diving, wrestling, weightlighting we havent really contested.

Re: Olympics Last Day
It's either Tokyo, Istanbul or Madrid for 2020.
2024 is someway off and some countries are throwing their names into the ring. Perhaps I'm being snobbish, but places like Nairobi, Baku etc. I don't see as Olympic cities, at least at the moment.

I thought he meant 08 and 48. 2012 probably had the strongest ever group of cities bidding for it. (New York, Moscow, London, Paris, Madrid)

And we were apparently given the Games via a voting mistake. It was a good mistake though!

Re: Olympics Last Day
Ifs and buts.
No garantee even if that vote went the other way anyway.
London got through anyway. The vote would have only put paris and madrid level. So paris still could have got though. Even if madrid didget through in the vote off. they would still have had to beat london. Its speculation of the highest order

Istanbul are favourites for 2020, with Madrid and Tokyo contenders. But with the Games having been in Spain as recently as '92 and in Asia in '08 it would appear Istanbul would be favourite.

I kind of want Istanbul to get the Olympics, not because of what that may bring to the Olympics, but because Euro 2020 might come to Scotland.

Given Madrid only narrowly missed out last time I wouldnt bet against them getting it again despite it not being long since Bracelona.
Instanbul would make sense in a lot of ways, bridging Asia and Europe, but Id seriously question their ability to provide a secure games and the amount of money that will dissapear into dubious peoples pockets is frightening...which is the main reason I assume they will win the vote.

They're not held in the same year though.
On 8 May 2012, IOC President Jacques Rogge stated Turkey would have to withdraw its bid to host Euro 2020, should Istanbul be awarded the 2020 Olympics. IOC rules state that an Olympic host nation may not host another major sporting event in the country in the same year as the Olympics.

If I had a vote, I'd go for Tokyo.
With the Spanish economy the way it is, I don't think I'd want to be giving the games to Spain and with it going to Brazil and a new country in 2016, I think I'd want a safe bet.
