Olympics, Day 7
Getting this up early as I'm off soon.
A great day for us yesterday as we won three golds, taking our score to 5. We now sit 5th in the medal table and with any luck could sit in 3rd by the day is out.
The main event starts today as well, with the athletics kicking off at 10 with Jess Ennis.
AND COME ON ALAN CAMPBELL!

Re: Olympics, Day 7
I reckon we've got 4 great chances for golds tomorrow, but I won't say that's all the chances we've got because as today proved, you never know.
I see Queen Vic in the Keirin, Men's team pursuit look great and Dame Becky in the 800 and of course Granger and Watkins hopefully to dominate in the double skulls.
Outside chances I see the Men's Pair rowing (Kiwis are crazy good) but we're probably second best, Alan Campbell in the single skulls and perhaps even our guy in the Archery (Larry Godfrey) who has a punchers chance of a medal tomorrow now he's in the last 16.
Can't see many more but who knows what might happen in the Judo?
Good luck one and all.
(I apologise for the repost from the previous thread, but it's more relevant here.)

Re: Olympics, Day 7
Today sees the last two races in the Finn and Star class. Britain are up for possible golds in both.
Percy and Simpson are leading the star class Ainslie is second in the Finn.
Both are multiple gold medalists.
They have the day off tomorrow then a medal race on Sunday where the top teen from the series race for double points.
Two races today, looks like more perfect conditions here in Weybiza...!

Re: Olympics, Day 7
Below is a Newspaper Report which will make some uncomfortable reading for Team GB who won cycling gold. Hindes repeated his assertion last night on the BBC with a clearly uncomfortable Chris Hoy sitting beside him that he delibrately crashed as they had not started well on their qualifying run....................whether this happens all the time, im not sure, but it looks like the Gold Medal is very much tainted by Hindes assertion.
Dont think this story will go away.................
SIR Chris Hoy was privately angry after claiming his fifth career gold medal when his teammate Philip Hindes admitted crashing deliberately in the qualification round of the men's team sprint.
Hoy's elation was tempered by the incident. British Cycling's knight prides himself on his adherence to the spirit of fair play, and he was subdued in his post-race press conference. It was not the manner in which he wanted to win an Olympic title.
Hoy, Hindes and Jason Kenny won the three-man, three-lap team sprint in a world record 42.600sec, beating France in a repeat of the final four years ago in Beijing.
Hindes picked himself up off the track after a poor start in qualifying, and the 19-year-old German-born rider, who joined British Cycling's academy in October 2010, said his crash was a deliberate ploy.
He said: 'We were saying if we have a bad start we need to crash to get a restart. I just crashed, I did it on purpose to get a restart, just to have the fastest ride. I did it. So it was all planned."

The big names performing so far. Jess Ennis produced a record time for a Heptathlete in the hurdles race to score big on her first event.
Dai Greene won his heat in the 400 metres hurdles looking comfortable and relaxed.
The name athletes look relaxed and at ease. That has to bode well for the athletics tournament although, of course, there is a long way to go.
The stadium looks magnificent. Packed to the rafters and a terrific atmosphere. A great start to the main event of the Games.

Grainier/Watkins Gold
Would have been astonished if they hadn't won , but after Kath Grainger has had
three Olympic Silvers she will be relieved as much as elated to make it official...
One I really wanted to see win this time

Aussies aren't doing too badly at the rowing - several medals but no gold yet , they still have a couple of chances ...
So far GB , NZ and Germany are bossing the show.

I agree, they then wear the Irish kit. When they have chosen to represent GBR then they wear GBR colours and should be refeered to as members of team GBR and not Northern Irish.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
Maybe, but what should Ireland be called, in sports where Northern ireland have a team- Ireland are called ROI. In teams where they are united they are called Ireland- in this case its a split.
However calling a northern irish man british is technically incorrect- because they are not british- they are UK citizens not british! so In this case inverdale is probally correct,

Thomond if ireland played as one in everything- who would NI citizens play for that want to be Nortern irish and Uk citizens first! there wouldnt be a country for them. Would they all pick ireland in the olympics- even though they are funded by british and ni tax payers and our lottery!?
Shouldnt Irish united teams be called ROI and nortern ireland as well.
Its all a mess mate.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
And another Gold for NZ...
Quite funny here because the Aussie commentators on TV are incredibly biased (yes , much more so than most Australians. Truly ). They know a bit about rowing , but their delusional efforts in some of these races have to be heard to be believed...they were still suggesting in the last 200 that the Aussies were a chance to catch Grainger and Watkins
In fairness they do praise the winners eventually ( even the British and Kiwis !)

I would imagine they receive more funding from the Irish authorities, GUI give a hell of a lot of funding to the Ulster branch of the GUI, has done a lot to churn out golfers like we have up north. But yes it's a complicated issue.

Nope not olympic events- Olympic athletes are put on the stamp and funded by the Uk tax payers and lottery funding.(they receiev a decent living wage to concentrate oin sport.)
Golfers arnt really funded - its mainly private sector, and they are clearly funded in life by UK anyway- which is considerably alot more than the odd train ticket to a national amatuer event

Re: Olympics, Day 7
I dont see how its difficult. The Northern Irish athletes that chose to represent GBR wear the GBR team uniform the same as the English, Welsh, Scottisch etc so deserved to be called members of team GBR and not refeered to as Northern Irish.
If the atheletes from Northern Ireland chose to represent Ireland then they wear the Irish team uniform and are refeered to as Irish.
I cant see how that is so difficult?

The proper name of the UK is actually the United Kingdom and Great Britain and Ireland, GB and Ireland itself is a shortened form...GB a further shortening.
I assume the channel islands are also under "team GB" even though they arent part of the UK

Because the team is technically called Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so it's avoiding criticism by calling them Northern Irish which is correct.

Are you seriously claiming that guys who are members of the Irish Union are more funded by British authorities (leaving private sector aside) that can't be true. GUI has done a lot of work up there with funding from the Irish government and Parliament. It would be close to equal.
Guys liek Barnes who live up North are paid by the Irish Authorities, it's relatively simple if you comeppte for Ireland you get a grant from ou boys, you get a grant from GB if you compete for them.
