Ryder Cup Captain 2014 - Congratulations Paul McGinley
First topic message reminder :
DC's come out and said he doesn't think he should be Ryder Cup captain in 2014. Olly has said he'll never do it again. How many more people need to make some sort of gesture before Monty rules himself out and leaves the way clear for McGinley?

So this is what Coco said -
"I think it will be a disappointing day for the European Tour if it doesn't go Paul McGinley's way"
Shouldnt it really have read -
"I think it will be a disappointing day for the European Tour, who I sporadically support but ultimately just used as a stepping stone to the PGA tour where I will largely play for the rest of my career due to wealth and fame requirements, if it doesn't go Paul McGinley's way.

Re: Ryder Cup Captain 2014 - Congratulations Paul McGinley
I think McIlroy is trying to get across 2 things:
(1) The respect him and all the players have for McGinley - lets face it, there are ZERO members of the players Committee with a chance of qualifying for the team. I think the "campaign" from the current players for McGinley represents them wanting to go public before others make the call, and why not.
(2) Montgomerie is hugely unpopular among the players

Why should McIlroy "support" the European Tour and what aspects of his schedule offend you?

I didnt say he should support it, but if he chooses not to and primarily plays his golf elsewhere then I dont believe he's in a great position to make public announcements about what actions they should or shouldnt take.

He didnt have to play too many pure European events to win that though did he Smithers ? Majors and co sanctioned events stacked up the euros for him.

So you can only express interest in and concern for the future of the European tour if you're a Poopie journeyman?

Im just suggesting that as someone who largely prefers to ply his trade elsewhere he possibly isn't best placed to tell them how they should do their jobs.
And yes a journeyman pro should have more say but they probably dont get a hard on by tweeting their views to thousands of kiss arses.

Sorry Franny..................The fact that maybe only one or possibly none of the potential members of the 2014 team have a vote whereas Felipe Aguilar, a journeyman pro from Chile has a vote is perhaps wrong..........

like the title change
for the record, i never said i thought monty should get the gig - i just think there's more than a very good chance he will.
i have a nasty feeling about everything 'scottish' related to 2014 - call me paranoid, but i think the whole independance question is going to get some helpful nudges from lots of different corners. hey - even the recent film 'brave' had an underlying pro-independance message.
the poll is a great indicator that monty has next to zero support on here. thought it would be useful to see if there were any monty fans just being quiet, but seems there aren't.

Straw poll by DirectGolf on twitter suggests we're not alone in being strongly pro PM.
Ironic that the general consensus on here is also, iirc, anti-independence?

Richard Bland tweeted his support for McGinley. Is he journeyman/unlikely to make the team enough for you?

I've had a brilliant idea.
Zinger took some plaudits for introducing pod system into the team. Europe could steal and perfect the concept - split the team into 2 groups of 6 and appoint a captain to each.
I'm sure that will work, can't see any problem with the concept whatsoever...

Is there anyone you dont follow on twitter ?
Bland should have more right to comment on the decision making of tour committees as he is at least fully committed to it, but just like McIlroy IMO he would be better served doing so in private.

Don't follow, just saw a retweet. That's the thing with social media, you can be exposed to stuff without necessarily seeking it out. Whether that's a good or bad thing is another matter.
I'd venture to suggest that McIlroy's already done more for the ET than Bland and a hundred like him will ever do combined. That's not to denigrate their efforts, simply a matter of economics. While he's still playing in enough events to keep a card he still has a say.

So if the USA are not very familiar with Mr McGinley, then Europe have the key weapon of surprise...

Watson a great guy from all accounts, but I have no reason to believe he can motivate or manage the egos that will become the US Ryder Cup team. Good luck to him, however.
I think for many (most?) of the top European players the Euro tour has been a stepping stone to the US tour for some time.

Phew...well done selectors. Good luck and best wishes to McGinley
I had nothing against Monty and if he had got it I'm sure he would have given it his best shot but the fact is he was one of the main protagonists for saying it should be a one time thing and he certainly said that after CM. I think he just got a wee bit carried away after Watson was announced and the whole cringeworthy 2014 Scottish thing.

The only phoney aspect of that news conference (thanks Ned) was the colour of George O'Gray's hair - while McGinley was doing his best not to look like a dog-with-two-pr1cks I was reading a 2008 interview:
"with his sandy hair" . . . not any more!
Interesting the other guys (Jimenez, Lawrie, Lyle, Montgomerie) who were considered; presumably Stenson dropped his support of Montgomerie?

van de velde anyone for paris 2018. imo monty would have done a great job as captain in 2014 but with the level of support publicly from the players, cs prevailed in the decision going to paul mcginley. he has always performed well in RC and has had the experiences of the seve tropy and vc in RC 2010 and 2012 which will help him no end

Re: Ryder Cup Captain 2014 - Congratulations Paul McGinley
From one of my earlier posts "Hopefully, the committee (or whoever decides it) will decide he's (Monty) had his shot and choose someone else anyway. At that point as long as he is graceful and unequivocally supportive of whoever does get it fair play to him. Whether he would do this or not is my concern."
Seems to have been answered positively
From BBC - "Paul McGinley tells Radio 5Live that he was quick to contact rival Colin Montgomerie after being named as Ryder Cup captain.
He says: "He was the first man I saw and he came up and congratulated me warmly and wished me the very best of luck. He was very gracious to me."
Fair play to Monty, my concerns seem to have ben unfounded and I shall have fresh cream with a small helping of humble pie.

Under all circumstances, every word Monty will say about the RC in the next 18 months will for sure be scrutinised thoroughly. If Monty shouldn't stir up the European RC preparations, he should really keep a low profile and pick his words wisely when asked.
What also worries me is the emphasis Paul MacGinley puts on McIlroy's "endorsement". I think Paul should have played that down a bit, as he basically says the big players choose the captain rather than the committee. Fact is that Bjorn came out already days ago stating that selecting a European captain would never be influenced by whomever the Americans choose. To me a clear indication that Monty was never considered and that they'd go along with McGinley regardless. McIroys conmments were therefore "free of charge" as I think he basically always knew McGinley would be selected - whereas McGinley seemed to give the rooster credit for the sunrise.

I like Mcginley he looks like a motivator......and a peoples man.
Never understood why they wanted to give it to Monty again!!
Would have preferred Couples to Watson.....
Very surprised Mcilroy has been so vocal against Monty....seems over the top for me!!
Do they not get on???.....Sure Monty is feeling a little hurt..
Anyway good choice......He's a wholehearted guy who will get twelve motivated players..wanting to play for him!!

There's no guarantee that Harrington will get it. He's of an age where he's going to be up against some Ryder Cup legends come 2018 (Poulter, Westwood, Donald, Garcia, Jiminez). I would say he's very much an outside bet given his dire record.
I don't mind Paddy as a golfer, and he seems a nice guy (even though his eyes are too close together), but in Ryder Cup he seems to be a bit part player with an air of malaisse about him. I can't see him being considered, nor arrogant enough to take it.
