Irish U20s Six Nations Squad
First topic message reminder :
John Andrew (Ballymena/Ulster)
Jake Caulfield (Malone/Ulster)
John Creighton (Malone /Ulster)
Steve Crosbie (Old Belvedere/Leinster)
Thomas Daly (Lansdowne/Leinster)
John Donnan (Ballynahinch/Ulster)
Peter Dooley (Lansdowne/Leinster)
Conor Joyce (Malone/Ulster)
Sean McCarthy (Shannon/Munster)
Luke McGrath (UCD/Leinster)
George McGuigan (Newcastle Falcons/Exile)
Ryan Murphy (Dolphin/Munster)
Stuart Olding (Belfast Harlequins /Ulster)
Alexander O'Meara (Hartpury/ Exiles)
David Panther (Corinthians/Connacht)
Rory Scannell (Dolphin/Munster)
Rory Scholes (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
Brian Scott (UCC/Munster)
Darren Sweetnam (UCC/Munster)
Christopher Taylor (Malone/Ulster)
Gavin Thornbury (UCD/Leinster)
Peadar Timmins (UCD/Leinster)
Josh Van Der Flier (UCD/Leinster)
First game is vs Wales - Fri 1st Feb 19:10 Wales U20 v Ireland U20 Parc Eirias. I think it's on RTE 2.
Bit disappointed - I was hoping Olding might leapfrog NOC during the Grown-Ups 6N. I know the Ravens had been playing with him at 10 and O'Connor at 12. He and Joyce have had senior caps - I think Rory Scholes played in a friendly back at the start of the season? Missing Farrell, who is still eligible, due to injury.
Chance for Luke McGarth to start his bid for Leinster scrumhalf-ship?

Luke McGrath is the big star of this team. I wish our 15, Olding, was at 10 with him. His best position is outhalf but I've been hearing that Ulster are looking to use him in the Pro12 games during the 6N so he may not be available- hence it makes sense to have a settled half-back combination.

That Welsh line out didn't look straight to me unless it was blown left.

We got a lineout in their 22. I wonder if it'll be straight this time?

Well, Ireland can keep doing what they're doing in the scrums, they're giving us points (if sam had kicked them all of course)
Ireland are missing the the Byrne brothers in the front row, and the replacements, especially at tighthead look poor.
What do you know about Jake Caulfield? Two Ulster tightheads in the 23 tonight, just hope somebody can put their hand. Macklin has been underwhelming and is now out for the season and Declan Fitzpatrick spends more time in the treatment room than the training paddock!
John Afoas contract ticking down is a timebomb for Ulster- we need somebody to put their hand up!

This hooker is bloody awful. It was the same story in the same fixture last year. Lots of mistakes that turned out to be costly.

Doing the seniors proud.
Welsh knock ons are quite frankly criminal. 19 points squandered.

The injuries in the backline are so annoying. Imagine having Olding at 10 with Farrell and Henshaw available in the centre, and Adam Byrne in the back three. The amount of damage they would do, even off limited ball.

I'm going to have to mute this. It's the worst commentary in world rugby. Rick O'Shea is a clueless idiot.

All I'm hearing from Charlo is McGrath...he's certainly this Irish squad's brightest star by the sounds...

Not enough to comment tbh, I'm putting my faith in Fitz discovering a cure to his injury problems.

Ruddock yapping to Phil Steele now. Unfortunately his interview is being drowned out by the local PA trying to get the crowd to sing Hymns and Arias...

Referee not calling holding on at the breakdown, for either teams, it's frustrating when there is good follow up like just then by the Welsh no11.

Not to mention coming in at the side at the ruck, should have been a kickable pen to Ireland, instead 3 point opportunity for Wales.

Sam misses another crucial penalty. I'm not sure if it's very windy there though. It looked likethe ball got carried wide there.
3-7 coming up to HT.

I'm watching this on iPlayer and apparently this is the red button commentary. So why are we putting up with this over the standard commentary.

Wales looked good for the first 15 minutes, but Ireland definitely deserve their lead after the shambolic last 25.

Tough one.
I think there have been more handling errors than missed kicks, but more missed kicks than knock ons.

Remember when Jonathan Humphreys was hooker for Wales?
He coined the term "butter fingers".

Shambolic ain't the word and the commentators think it ain't a bad half by both sides? Oh dear. How many balls did Wales drop? Utter useless. Talk about looking like a team that hasn't played together in their lives after going through all that during the summer.

Ruddock says our LH is usually a TH. that kinda explains our problems at the scrum. Surley we have another LH though?

Re: Irish U20s Six Nations Squad
Ye the Irish LH is a TH covering because of injuries.
Not sure what all the issues are, there are a number of players who are being massively outclassed at this level (Thomas 7 and Jones 15) but them aside both teams are trying to play a game in difficult conditions.
I like the look of Ellis 8 and Jenkins 6, Davies started well with an armchair ride but has lost his composure.
Very dissapointed in the welsh centre pairing, they are true quality but have offered very little.
Wales pack have a distinct physical advantage, but the Irish back row and half backs look classy.

In fairness our problems in the scrum seem to be on the TH side. And on Scott its hard to say where he will end up, in the last year, he has played in all three front row positions on a number of occasions.

Thomas is an goodplayer, he didn't have a good first half, but was excellent in the U20s WC last year.
And he just got an excellent turnover
