Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
First topic message reminder :
Former Wasps & QPR boss appointed MD
Davies seems to have a good CV with experience in rugby. Also has experience in "building" stadiums.
It'll be interesting to hear Wasps/QPR fans view of him.

Great stuff. They really are sticking by Cairnsy which is not like the SRU at all. He’s only 27 so got plenty playing time left – let’s hope he can get back to full fitness as his style of play epitomises everything that is good about Edinburgh Rugby (or at least has been in the past!)

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
This news is a pleasant surprise. It also gives the new coach the chance to make the final decision, which is certainly the best way forward for all concerned.
Fingers crossed the rehab over the summer goes well. We should have at least another 5 strong years from Ben Cairns yet. He's the best centre in the squad at picking angles, and I think he'd make a good partner for Matt Scott.
Good press release as well. Finally a hint of leadership from the Edinburgh management. Now, where's that world class coach.....?

If Scotland have been given the ospreys forwards coach I'm significantly lowering my expectations from an Edinburgh point of view...

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
I know, it doesn't really set the bar particularly high. The working assumption has to be that Scott Johnson recommended him, and that Scott Johnson it to be head coach through to the next World Cup.
I don't so much hate the appointment, more the process, which once again has been amateur at best.
As always with the SRU, zero transparency prevails. It's as if they don't really care what fans think in Scotland, and don't feel that we deserve any sort of explanation as to what is going on. I can only assume we've been turned down by half a dozen or so top candidates, and therefore SJ is the best we can hope for, but we'll never know.
I thought the way England did it with Lancaster was much much better. Approach 10 or so candidates, draw up a shortlist of those interested and then announce your man.

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
Was the only announcement of this a small press release on the SRU website? They are hardly shouting this news from the rafters. It almost certainly means that SJ will be the coach for the next couple of years - another closed door process with zero information being given to the fans.

A name to throw into the hat as a potential head coach is an ex Edinburgh player from a good few years ago who is doing very well as forwards coach at the Stormers in the super rugby.....Matt Proudfoot!!
Really good things being said about him as a coach and could be the next step up for him!

Good scouting!! You've already put in more effort than the SRU I suspect.
I remember Proudfoot - never quite lived up to the hype as a player.

Get Proudfoot in as head coach and bring in a couple of home grown coaches as assistants, kenny murray from ayr and simon cross from accies possibly!

Here's hoping there'll be some mightily peed off Edinburgh players on Friday night - would ve great to see Ford, Laidlaw, Scott and visser take their frustration out on the Dragons!

Looks like Dickinson will be at Edinburgh next season.
"they are set to bid farewell to two more of their current firs team squad with Scotland prop Alasdair Dickinson expected to confirm he is moving north of the border to joining Edinburgh in the summer."

I really pity the coach who will be in charge of Edinburgh next season.
Thay have a really lightweight pack and are basically weakening it with a very average player who is worse than Jacobsen in every facet of the game.

I've said it here already but I'll be quite happy with Dickinson - we've got to be realistic about the calibre of player we can attract and he definitely won't weaken our loose head options

I'm pleased with the signing of Dickinson. Underrated player, and I think he'll move ahead of Yapp next season.

Don't say that on the Edinburgh forum (or do and back me up). I'm getting pelters for saying he'd be a decent signing.

It's because they don't know what they are talking about on there. They remember Dickinson stupidly being played at tighthead for Scotland and crumbling, when he never should have been in that position.
We're not talking about him playing international rugby here, we're talking about a solid and committed club player, and an excellent prop in the loose. If Edinburgh can recapture that fast offloading game, then having props like Nel, Cross and Dickinson is just the ticket.

Was gonna say, Edinburgh fans are generally a bunch of idiots – particularly on Facebook – so I don’t go near that forum!
We are all obviously the exception on V2!
I generally give fairly negative comments on the Facebook page after terrible defeats (we’ve had plenty of those this year) and you get idiots on there sprouting off a load of nonsense about them trying hard and needing people to get behind them – bugger off!

I hate that sort of comment. Just because you are able to criticise a performance doesn't make you any less of a supporter.
Still, Edinburgh could use an army of knuckle draggers who cannot distinguish a good performance from a bad one. In fact it's exactly what we need!!

Strong looking side named for the Dragons game. Good to see Richie McIver given a chance from the bench, they must think a lot of him if he's ready to step in after just a couple of weeks' professional training. Mind you, maybe there isn't anyone else, look at the size of that injury list!

Disappointing that Denton and Rennie are still injured, I think they need the summer off to fully recover. Denton might not want that though having missed last year’s summer tour with Scotland. We can cope without them this summer and it would be good to have them fighting fit for next season.

XV of unavailable players:
Allan, Walker, Niven
Turnbull, vdWesthuizen
Basilaia, Denton, Rennie
Leck, Hidalgo-Clyne
Roddy Grant , Cairns
Farndale, A.N.Other, Jones
nearly a whole xv out injured (or busy elsewhere), fortunately not many first choice players though

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
Interesting that he's not given some of the departing players a token send off - Rees, Visser etc.
To be fair the only one that would really merit inclusion would be Rees, as the rest have barely played!
Ridiculous that Mike Penn (who?) didn't play a single game for the club outside pre-season - didn't even make it onto the bench!

I'm hoping Fusaro will be close to full fitness so with him and Barclay, Scotland will be well covered at 7. Same with Beattie and Wilson at 8, so yeah, Rennie and Denton should probably take the time off and come back ready to start next season like they mean it!

Don't know what they've done to van der Westhuizen. I'm sure he played nearly all the Cheetahs games last season in both the Super 15 and Currie Cup. He's spent most of his time here on the physio bench.

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
Might have been nice to give them a send off but it looks like they've gone full strength to finish the season with a win, maybe they think that would be best for confidence for nest season?
I think I remember when Penn signed he had failed to get into the Worcester side for years and had been out on loan at a lower league club - seemed a completely daft signing at the time and still does!

Worryingly Sean Kennedy is likely to tour with Scotland, and if Laidlaw gets a callup to the Lions he might even be on the bench!
Great experience for him but shows our frailty at scrum half currently…

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
It's a good and strong side for the last game of the season, where hopefully we can do a hatchet job on Lydiate's ankle and get Kelly Brown into the Lions reckoning.....(only kidding)...
It's been a great run of games for young Hamish Watson. He'll have picked up a fair bit and can hopefully have a good pre-season for next year and offer better back-up for Rennie and Grant. It's a position where experience is everything.
Pleased also that Harry Leonard has finished the season on top. We need to get him and Matt Scott playing together as much as possible. That's a potential international midfield comination right there.
As a season ticket holder I'm allowed to take a guest in for free, so the missus has a very special treat lined up on Friday.....although she's not allowed into the reserved seat section so she can stand by herself.....

That's quite an injury list that! Yikes
Perhaps vdW could have done with some time off between SuperXV/Currie Cup duties and moving over - hopefully a summer off will revive him

To be fair not many countries could lose two players of the calibre of Cusiter and Blair in such a short time and not be found slightly wanting. We still have Laidlaw and Pyrgos, but personally I think Kennedy is going to turn out to be the pick of the bunch.

Yeah i think VDW has just played too many games without any time off. Going from super rugby to Currie Cup and then rabo12 is just too much. Confident with a good off season and full pre season we will see the good player he actually is.
I like that people have had similar experiences to me on the Edinburgh rugby forum, they are clueless on there and I wonder if any of them have ever played a game of rugby themselves.

Agreed, I have high hopes for VDW next season, similarly Basilia, who I hope can settle down and offer us a good physical option at 6 next season.

We should start a support group for those who have managed to break free from the clutches of the embra forum. Ill get the ball rolling.
Hi, Im dave, and im an edinburgh supporter. Ive been clean from the edinburgh forum for about 6 months now. I was on a self destructive cycle of happy clappy-ness for years before that. I hated what I was doing, but I couldnt bring myself to quit. My escape route was when I deleted my browsing history for something unrelated, chrome stopped logging me in automatically, and I forgot my password. Suddenly it was as if a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I felt real once again and didnt see everything through black and red spectacles.
Sometimes I feel a strong temptation to log back in, but thankfully ive avoided any relapses. So far.
Thank you for listening.

Ha! That sort of thing really doesn't bother me at all!
Dragons Team to face Edinburgh
Dan Evans, Tom Prydie, Ross Wardle, Lewis Robling, Tonderai Chavhanga, Steffan Jones, Jonathan Evans; Aaron Coundley, Hugh Gustafson, Nathan Buck, Andrew Coombs (c), Rob Sidoli, Dan Lydiate, Nic Cudd, Toby Faletau.
Hmmm, Coombs, Lydiate and Faletau - I suspect Edinburgh may struggle if I'm being honest.

Re: Out with the old, in with the new at Edinburgh
Well, for those of us who enjoyed spending a Friday evening watching Edinburgh get bullied by Connacht at home, and the pleasure of watching highlights of Treviso walk all over us, we can certainly see the vast improvements brought about by this world class coaching team of Hodge and Scott.
Glittering CVs.
If they are appointed as the new coaching team on a long term basis, I will write to the SRU and ask for my season ticket to be refunded. There is absolutely zero justification for appointing these guys. None. There MUST be better options out there!

There's something seriously wrong on the HR side at Murrayfield - contracts for coaching staff and playing personnel are a serious dogs feicing breakfast - too long when shorter required, no performance clauses, not long enough, deputies appointed before heads, etc.

But FES - how will you entertain the missus once a year if you don't have your free ticket from season ticket membership??

Granted that's a serious problem. She'll miss the horse meat burgers and overpriced lager more than anything else I suspect.

Probably best to avoid giving your wife a Chunk mask though – you’ll get a massive contradiction of feelings there!
