For that to happen though, one of the current duo needs to get out...and pretty soon...

Never thought I'd find myself wanting an England batsman to get out! Shocked

Some credit to Australia too...Bailey has shuffled his bowing pack pretty well , and the ground fielding has been generally excellent. Warner for one has been brilliant.
Getting "extra" overs in from Voges and Marsh has given Bailey some flexibility for the later overs. Still all to play for...

Swann injured and Finn dropped? Ho hum. Now when are England going to step on the accelerator? 300 is definitely on here.

Good innovation from Root clap

I would settle for a solid five overs here , get up to 200 or so then go nuts in the last ten...

This can't be right, ive woken up to see us doing very well and in an extremally healthy position to get a very good score up! This is superb batting from England!

Really buzzing for Ian Bell, a lot of critics on his back, but this should hopefully shut a few of them up. Shame Trott couldn't get his 50 up Sad

Also what a lovely cheeky shot from Joe Root!!!

Post by Mike Selig Sat 08 Jun 2013, 1:21 pm

Think the "double the score after 30" is probably outdated nowadays - probably more after 32-33 or even 35 if wickets in hand. 100 off the last 10 is par for the course remember. From 141/1 off 30 England should get to 300.

The one issue with this gameplan for England is when they come across a really flat pitch, where the par score is 300+. It's not a gameplan which will often get more than 280-300.

For today, I imagine that Tredwell and Bopara's bowling will prove useful, but a bit concerned about Bresnan and maybe Anderson.

Australia have done ok, but Starc struggling has not helped. Agree with alfie re Bailey's captaincy.

I think on a pitch like this KP is required to get England off to a quicker score.

Bell gone now. Need Morgan to continue his form the other day.

Argh!

Bell bowled just short of his 100 by Faulkner. England 189-3. Unlucky!

Morgan coming out to the crease...lets hope this is when the fireworks start.

this is all looking too familiar.. messing up pp's , losing key players, falling well short of the sort of score the opposition will get too.

we were start to figure this format out under flower but Giles is sending us backwards.

And Root goes for just 12. England 190-4.

Once again the powerplay signals the death knell of the England innings. Why are we so inept with our tactics?

Bopara the new man - lets hope he can do better.

Sticking with my prediction that we won't get much more than 250.

The old Curse of the Power Play is still on...Joe Root gone now .

300 far from assured. There is plenty of time left , believe it or not ; but three wickets going down recently leaves some work to do. Stand up now , Ravi Smile

2 new players still finding their feet at the crease means this powerplay will do nothing for our score - not in the way a PP should anyway.

This is a pathetic innings, showing a flawed gameplan.

You cannot rely on Morgan & Buttler to get you out of jail on every occasion, and that's exactly what England are doing by allowing the top 3 to bat at such a pedestrian rate. Yes, they increase their run rate as their innings progresses, but if they get out within the first 35 overs, then their run rates are typically only around 70, which is nowhere near good enough, and puts too much pressure on the lower order.

This is a perfect batting wicket, with a rapid outfield. There is no reason why 6.5 per over couldn't have been achieved from the outset. These are such outdated tactics.

In conclusion... GILES OUT!!!

Not the tactics , dyrewolfe : just that a couple of soft wickets have gone down quickly. They weren't going crazy to make up for slow scoring or anything , Bell just missed one and Root was playing as he does and picked out a fieldsman...it could have happened at any time , power play or not.
Losing Trott just before the pp was seen by most as a good thing , so one could say the tactics got them to exactly the right situation for the last fifteen.

Poor execution rather than poor planning. Still got ten overs to make hay.

As it stands, we're still not scoring quickly enough in the first 30.

Plus why send in Root (who is still new in the England setup) ahead of Morgan and Buttler?

We could have taken some initiative and shuffled the batting lineup to blast some quick runs.

Also it didn't help losing 2 well set batsmen just before the powerplay.

I think its a combination of poor tactics and execution.

In a word...no. Sad

Lost key wickets at key times and ended up with 2 new batsman in for the powerplay. Looking like we'll make 250 tops...think the Aussies will beat that comfortably.

Oh dear...and it goes from bad to worse.

Morgan bowled for 8. England 212-5.

...and as I type Buttler is bowled for a paltry 1. England 213-6.

5 wickets gone for 45 runs and no acceleration in the scoring.

Again I ask, why are we so crap at powerplays?

Warne saying Morgan got out because he was left too much to do...well maybe. But Morgan plays those shots all the time...

Indeed things have gone awry for England in these last few overs...but we do not know what would have happened had England tried to press the accelerator earlier , do we ?
We need to take into account the limitations of the batsmen , and the efforts of the opponents.

Deep trouble now as Butler fails Sad

Might be glad we have Bresnan to bat today...

Think KP needs to open in place of Bell (when he's fit). This plan can't continue, it's far too one-dimensional.

Unlucky from Buttler. Inside edge on pad onto stumps. Unfortunate. Dug ourselves a hole now though.

Our whole system is flawed.

We get the big stand with bell and trott- as soon as they open up to try and score quicker during a PP they get out!! Only one of these batsmen is needed per partnership!!

Then the others dont have any overs to bat , so they slash to get the runs trying to play for the team to increase the SR yet the chances are they get out- We cant allways get the 47 off 16 that Butler did last game to save the openers blushes!

Where is KP WHEN WE NEED HIM!!
