Pick your favourite two...
Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
I really wanted to call this round 'coffin botherers' but I refrained so as not to offend the sensibilities of the wider forum.
Last round was a romp for transgender anthem Lola, followed by Rod Stewarts ode to a slightly morally corrupt woman sleeping with a schoolboy.
Back on more solid ground with this round, so please select your TWO favourite tracks from the poll. Maybe leave a reason why you voted for what you did, or even better, insult the selection of some of the rubbish tracks here.
The next round will be a bit of a narrower field, and I want your album openers. I.e. songs that are first on the album upon which they were originally released. I am taking a stand and refusing to accept compilation/best of albums because they will be all good songs.
Get them into me by Monday morning if you can and we'll get this hopping along.
Leaderboard is on the last round thread if you are so inclined to view it.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
Went for 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash, even though it came up in the covers round, it is genuinely an excellent song in its own right, not just as a cover.
And then I went for 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra, as it another one that I've liked.
Not a huge fan of John Lennon, didn't realise he'd get so many votes.
Was wondering whether a band with a dead member would count, so for example Nirvana?

Quick note about one of Hendrixes entries!
All along the watch tower was infact written by Bob Dylan. Allthough Hendrix took it to a different level. He didn't write the song and Dylan who did is alive and kicking!

Johnny Cash didn't write Hurt either, but Trent Reznor who wrote the song is.

Don't know how to play this game but it has to be Freddie 'who wants to live forever'.

Queen is another that I'm not sure would count.
What about the Beatles?

I'd be more concerned about the hidden message in the other Hendrix song choice. Why should we put a hex on the nation of Chile?

No, I made the distinction to avoid a very wide field to select from. I would have accepted bands where they were all dead, but none were nominated.

we were told specifically that we couldnt have lead singers of bands unless the majority of the band were dead.
Otherwise, Queen would have got a good showing!

I get the feeling that the chap that nominated that meant "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" but I had to take his nomination at face value.

No idea what Union's choice is. Went for Harrison and Sinatra. Does someone really think Woman is Lennon's best solo track?

If that's the case, then All Along the Watchtower shouldn't count. That was a Jimmy Hendrix Experience song, and one of the people involved in the recording (Dave Mason) is still alive....sodhat wrote:Crimey wrote:Went for 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash, even though it came up in the covers round, it is genuinely an excellent song in its own right, not just as a cover.

I went for Otis Redding and Elvis. It is not my favourite Presley song but it is still a great tune.
I think Sinatra will probably win this round. I like the song and would have voted for it, but when I was (much) younger we used to go to this club in the North-West and every Friday and Saturday night they would end the evening playing My Way.
All the mongs, thugs and ugly females would all congregate in the middle of the dance floor, put their arms round each other and sing it. Makes me shudder to remember it.

Gone for Macho Man and Stevie Hyper D.
Cash, Lennon, Marley etc are just too predictable to get excited about anymore. Especially 'Hurt'. Could have bet my house on it being on the list here, if I had one. It's been done to death and it still keeps popping up and getting votes.

I voted for my song and would have voted for my second choice if that was up there - Heard It Through The Grapevine. Quite surprised at how few songs on the list I liked.
Didn't vote for All Along The Watchtower I'm not a Hendrix fan and it was much better by Dylan, as most things are.
Top 5 Dylan Covers:
The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
Janis Joplin - Blowin in the Wind
Guns N Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door
Johnny & June Cash - It Aint Me Babe
Rage Against the Machine - Maggies Farm

Went for Instant Karma and Watchtower.
Instant Karma is Lennon's best imo, it is a brilliant song. It's a shame My Way is up there, it is no where near Frank Sinatra's best song, That's Life, Come Fly With Me, Theme from New York New York and Bad Bad Leroy Brown are so much better.
As for All Along The Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix made that song his own (as Louis Walsh would say). I don't care that Dylan wrote it, I associate it more with Hendrix.

Reading that back; yeah, it was pretty downbeat. I stand by it though. How about a round of 'Bands/Songs You Like But Nobody Else Knows'? Get people youtubing and discovering new stuff? Mix it up a bit.
Not a slight on sodhat's running of the game by the way, doing a sterling job, Sir. Just the nature of it (the game) I guess.

Voodoo Child is the one with the wah-wah guitar intro. The one Hogan used as his entrance in the WCW days. Chile is more bluesy, and long.
