Coming soon. The Culture Cup
First topic message reminder :
No, the Culture Cup isn't a really poor Boy George tribute act, it is the next installment of the v2 voting competitions. We have had music, TV and film, and now comes a bit of a mixture with some books thrown in for good measure.
It will follow the usual format of a category being put up, the contestants PM'ing me their choices and then a poll being set up for the wider 606v2 community to vote for their favourites. It will hopefully contain 3 x TV, 3 x Music, 3 x Film, 3 x Books and maybe a bonus round.
Adam has already got second place tied up as he is a perennial runner up in real life and on 606v2, but the winners spot is up for grabs. The prizes are excellent. The winner becomes undisputedly the most cultured poster across the whole internet, they get my respect and most importantly, they get 3% of all the advertising revenue that Adam coins in from the site. That is 3% of a lot of money. Not to be sniffed at.
Places are limited, so if you're interested in showing off what a culture vulture you are, then please let me know on this thread. Unless you are Adam, Jeff, Union, Galted, The Womble, compelling and rich or Dolphin in which case, you crazy kids are already entered.
Good luck.
Edit:
Here are the first two questions. Starting off with a couple of easy ones to get things up and running.
1) Best book ever. Quite simple really, what is the best book you have ever read? For those of you too dim to read, just make one up. If you're desperate to win then go for something popular. Alternatively, be true to yourself and pick your own favourite.
2) Greatest song never to reach the top 5 in the UK charts in the year of their release. Quite an open field, but we will be narrowing things down the further on we go. Thought about having songs that had never made the top 10 but decided that was too difficult.
Please PM me a couple of choices for each question in case you don't get your first pick. I will PM you if you don't get your first choice. If you don't hear from me, assume you got it.
Please can you send answers by the end of play Friday. When the poll is up, you can vote for yourself because I don't know how to ban it happening. If you can live with the self-loathing, then knock yourself out.
Good luck.

Have to say, there are some unbelievably good choices for the song category. There are 4 or 5 absolutely great picks.
And Union has sent his in as well.

It's a great song Jeff but I don't think it will win the popular vote.Rowley wrote:Will take it as a given my choice is in the four or five Tina.

I never go populist Tina, but suspect my performance in the TV cup has already given that away.

I can't believe there is a better song than my pick. Books one was difficult as I haven't really read many books since school and I'm not sure Idiot Abroad 2 or Hoggy: Welcome to my world (Matthew Hoggard) count.

My favourite book was gone, had an agonising pick over two absolute classics. I also couldnt pick a favourite Jasper Fforde, whilst A Life Too Short: The Tragedy of Robert Enke by Ronald Reng would have been completely unknown to most people.

Might be worth picking - the fact the competition contains the word "culture" could cause most of the ignoramuses to vote for the title with which they're least familiar.Dolphin Ziggler wrote:My favourite book was gone, had an agonising pick over two absolute classics. Re: Coming soon. The Culture Cup
I've been asked to confirm that the correct plural form of "ignoramus" is "ignorami."
Sorry, but no. As with most singular nouns ending in -s, the plural of "ignoramus" is formed by adding -es. So when one ignoramus hooks up with another, you have a couple of ignoramuses.
True, "ignoramus" is a Latin loan word, but it's derived from a verb ("ignorare")--unlike, say, "stimulus," which comes from a noun and is one of the few Latin borrowings to retain the plural ending of -i.

Either ending is acceptable though I just say "hippos" to be safe, or "f*****g hippos" if they're chasing me.Union Cane wrote:So you would say hippopotamuses then would you?seanmichaels wrote:I've been asked to confirm that the correct plural form of "ignoramus" is "ignorami."

Re: Coming soon. The Culture Cup
Apparently if they are chasing you you are meant to run in zig zags as they have really poor peripheral vision and will lose you eventually. Although that could be rhinos so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

Re: Coming soon. The Culture Cup
They would lose you and then find you again of you ran in zigzags, you'd be better off running diagonally, preferably in the direction of away.

Think zig zags is the wrong choice of words. You need to run in a varied direction making lots of sharp and unexpected turns. Although in reflection think it is rhinos now.
However if you look like being attacked by a polar bear you should play dead as they like to kill their prey and so can lose interest if they believe you are already expired.

I may be wrong but I think hippopotamuses would be more likely to attack you in the water. You'd probably be best off swimming off in a diagonal direction.

1. Run toward a cliff and dodge out of the way of the Rhino.
2. The Rhino will probably run of the cliff and most likely die.

Hang on, there is a disclaimer...
This is not based on expierience or reliable zoologists.
However, this is what I would do if confronted with a charging Rhino.
Warning!: Do not go out and try to be chased by a Rhino...it is not a smart move.

Why do these threads always seem to descend to knob jokes? There's more innuendo in this forum than at a Kenneth Williams convention.
I'm pretty confident my book choice will pick up at least 2 votes if not 3!! Both my book choices were worthy of being in this competition. Hopefully someone has nominated my second choice.

I remember that thread, wasn't it just renaming films with 'Willy' in the title?

If you using the word "hippos" to avoid the hippopotamuses/hippopotami confusion, couldn't you use the word "ignos" re "ignormause/ignorami"
I think I may start peppering my posts with it when I invariably start losing a debate/argument
