Coming soon. The Culture Cup
First topic message reminder :
No, the Culture Cup isn't a really poor Boy George tribute act, it is the next installment of the v2 voting competitions. We have had music, TV and film, and now comes a bit of a mixture with some books thrown in for good measure.
It will follow the usual format of a category being put up, the contestants PM'ing me their choices and then a poll being set up for the wider 606v2 community to vote for their favourites. It will hopefully contain 3 x TV, 3 x Music, 3 x Film, 3 x Books and maybe a bonus round.
Adam has already got second place tied up as he is a perennial runner up in real life and on 606v2, but the winners spot is up for grabs. The prizes are excellent. The winner becomes undisputedly the most cultured poster across the whole internet, they get my respect and most importantly, they get 3% of all the advertising revenue that Adam coins in from the site. That is 3% of a lot of money. Not to be sniffed at.
Places are limited, so if you're interested in showing off what a culture vulture you are, then please let me know on this thread. Unless you are Adam, Jeff, Union, Galted, The Womble, compelling and rich or Dolphin in which case, you crazy kids are already entered.
Good luck.
Edit:
Here are the first two questions. Starting off with a couple of easy ones to get things up and running.
1) Best book ever. Quite simple really, what is the best book you have ever read? For those of you too dim to read, just make one up. If you're desperate to win then go for something popular. Alternatively, be true to yourself and pick your own favourite.
2) Greatest song never to reach the top 5 in the UK charts in the year of their release. Quite an open field, but we will be narrowing things down the further on we go. Thought about having songs that had never made the top 10 but decided that was too difficult.
Please PM me a couple of choices for each question in case you don't get your first pick. I will PM you if you don't get your first choice. If you don't hear from me, assume you got it.
Please can you send answers by the end of play Friday. When the poll is up, you can vote for yourself because I don't know how to ban it happening. If you can live with the self-loathing, then knock yourself out.
Good luck.

Not all great books are made into films. There are also more categories of books than fiction. Personally if I want to learn about the second world war would rather do it through an Ian Kershaw book than by watching a Hollywood film.
and the Dice Man is cr@pola!

We have 15 entrants now, including Hero who has been added in absentia. I will give it a hour or so and if no-one else declares any interest I will leave it with the fine participants, and Galted, that we already have.

Laugh all you want, I watched a subtitled film (devoid of nipples) last night and I keep a copy of The Odyssey on my desk. Plus I've taken to drinking camomile tea (no milk). I'm expecting to have it wrapped up long before the final round.Mind the windows Tino. wrote:I'm touched.Azzy Mahmood wrote:Just because it's you, I'm in.Mind the windows Tino. wrote:Stop flirting and answer my question above. I have Sun Tzu's Art of War resting on top of my work PC right now. My calendar has pictures of archaeological finds. And I have two boxes of Earl Grey sat right next to me, and my assistant makes the tea

Not sure the scene in trainspotting where they translate the broad Scottish accent really counts.Galted wrote:Laugh all you want, I watched a subtitled film (devoid of nipples) last night

Talking of culture, I read the book of Trainspotting. It is written in a Scottish accent. Great book but took me about a week longer to read it because of the language.Rowley wrote:Not sure the scene in trainspotting where they translate the broad Scottish accent really counts.Galted wrote:Laugh all you want, I watched a subtitled film (devoid of nipples) last night
I was going to ask my old man to read it to me but I can't understand his accent either.

Re: Coming soon. The Culture Cup
I did similar with the book of Carlito's Way Tina. It is based on two books and the first is written in broad Puerto Rican slang, took me a bleeding age to get through. At the risk of sounding like LJ ever has a point, should have just watched the film.

Art of War is actually pretty useful. Allow me to give you some insight into how to win the Culture Cup, with the help of my old friend Sun Tzu:
Sun Tzu wrote:Thus it is said that one who knows the enemy and knows himself will not be endangered in a hundred engagements. One who does not know the enemy but knows himself will sometimes be victorious, sometimes meet with defeat. One who knows neither the enemy nor himself will invariably be defeated in every engagement.

Welsh wrote a follow up to Trainspotting called Porno. It is a brilliant book but way longer than Trainspotting and also written in Scottish. That took even longer. Correct, "mammals" is derived from "mammaries" which is just a fancy-arsed name for "bristols". Having mammaries is pretty much what distinguishes mammals from other types of animals.Rowley wrote:They are birds rather than mammals. Am no expert but thought that would mean they would be nipple free.
