Sky Sports are showing a repeat of the final in 95 between Seles and Graf. It's amazing how quick the court is and also how much better quality the match is compared to some of the borefests these days. I guess women's tennis prospers on quick courts.

Djokovic - Nadal. How hard can you batter the ball at your opponent?

That third set was one of my favourite sets of tennis. Both at their absolute best. The Special Juan wrote:Djokovic - Nadal. How hard can you batter the ball at your opponent?

Their best match in my opinion. The zenith of baseline tennis before it went a bit too far at AO12.The Special Juan wrote:Djokovic - Nadal. How hard can you batter the ball at your opponent?

yeah I enjoyed that match much more than their Aussie match, it was stunning from start to finish. The match in oz didn't really get going til the 4th set

Re: US Open - Matches
it was the first time I have ever seen Rafa completely lost for spells, where he couldn't best Novak. His incredible will in the 3rd set for me is what changed his mentality against him, even though he lost the match and then in in Oz he made lots of strides as he got the djokovic monkey off his back. He said the 3rd set was when he figured out what to do.

I'm in the middle of watching the Sampras / Fed Wimby 2001 match. I've yet to watch a point that's much above 5 stroke's and I'm in the fourth setThe Special Juan wrote:Sky Sports are showing a repeat of the final in 95 between Seles and Graf. Re: US Open - Matches
Yes, it was quite straight forward really. Position himself further forward and be more aggressive. I don't think he quite had the confidence to do it consistently in AO12 but he certainly seems to have it sussed now!CAS wrote:He said the 3rd set was when he figured out what to do.

Re: US Open - Matches
For me either one could beat Andy if he employs the wrong tactics and is too passive. The big key to Andy beating Tomas or Stan is aggression/attacking levels. If he goes into attritional mode and tries working his opponents around he will lose as it is a tactic that allows big hitters to get their big shot in first and dictate the points to him. He must be aggressive, get right on top in the rallies and approach the net. Pressuring Berdych into making passing shots and winners will pay far more dividends than trying to run the legs off him.banbrotam wrote:I hope you are correct
Remember it is about match-ups. Either one could beat Murray
And I certainly think that Berdych could beat Novak, Roger and / or Rafa - remember, we still have to see how the latter is at the tail end of a hard court slam. Plus Berdych's hard hitting game could trouble Rafa anyway
Stan's is admittedly a bit more far fetched!!

Re: US Open - Matches
Don't get me wrong, Nadal v Djokovic can be superb tennis matches when they both play well but it reminds me of the WTA - just hit it as hard as you can at your opponent without much variety. To be fair to Novak, in recent times he's coming to the net to change it up but the bulk of it is a power baseline game.

I remember watching highlights of it on YouTube a few months ago. It shows how good Federer has been that he's beaten Sampras in "his" conditions and all of today's players in "their" conditions.banbrotam wrote:I'm in the middle of watching the Sampras / Fed Wimby 2001 match. Even more Robredo has been 'nobbled' even more then. Deprived of a rare spot on Arthur Ashe.

Holy, please don't start a war Obviously since you're insisting, the world wants Fed to win, English speaking people want Murray, Barcelona and Chile want Nadal, and no one wants Djoko to win apart from his mom, and some guy from Iran.
For ladies, well, let the most beautiful lady win.

Re: US Open - Matches
Has to be the Bryans in the doubles and Serena in the ladies.
Men's is harder to call. Djoko or Nadal, with Murray not far behind.
The great thing is, I could be wrong on all of those!

I think Rafael Nadal will win.
Roger Federer about to get under way against Tommy Robredo - should be staight forward for Roger. On Grandstand David Ferrer is in action agaist Janko Tipsarevic and it is going with serve at 3-3 in the first set.

Women's - Serena (doubles and singles)
Men's Doubles - Bryans surely
Men's Singles - Flip a 3-sided coin. Couldn't back against Nadal though.

Fed starts with a lovely 0:40. Come on Fed, Tommy will knock your lights off, get a move, NOW!
And loses serve, disaster.

Commentators on Eurosport are suggesting it might be the larger racket he's using? Are they talking nonsense? I can't tell? Maybe they were just trying to explain his appalling start?

Re: US Open - Matches
Robredo's becoming even more impressive than Haas. It's as though he's seen the light for the first time and doesn't ever want to be 'blind' again.
He's always been my favourite Spaniard after Juan Carlos and I was pretty impressed with his play against Andy at Wimby
Roger, needs to bring something like his B+ game - but there is a big doubt as to whether it is available at this stage of a slam and with a suspect back

For me the conditions were way too fast and although they are too slow now, I can understand why they were slowed down
I mean you had two of the world's most skilful Tennis players ever, barley able to muster a decent passing shot. It was almost like Isner/Mahut I loved the drama at the time, but skills wise I couldn't get into it now
Fair play to Roger as he's seen all the conditions and been the best on them all

It doesn't matter how but you feel Roger must get this match won with minimum of fuss, preferably in straight sets with no more than two an a half hours play. He must go into the match against Rafa as fresh as possible.

Fed/Robredo/Hewitt/Youzny/Haas. Isn't it appalling how the youngsters have just wilted against these players?Jahu wrote:fed rolling on his magic finally. Oh how I miss last decade
I mean how on earth is Robredo allowed to recover from his terrible injuries and take his place back in the Top 20 as easy as taking ice cream from a toddler
I continue to be underwhelmed by all the young ones, although at least Raonic has some semblance of consistency
Murray and Novak will be two of the youngest last 16 in the draw

Robredo will choke it now quickly, thought seeing him and Haas as 30+ club, both seem much more physical and powerful then Fed, which is winning this years matched on sheer talent.
Fed had deteriorated quickly this year, bodywise. Looks like a guy who just came from the beach bar, knackered.

Yeah I could never go back to watching "that" tennis. The rallies are over before they begin and it's not much fun from a viewers perspectiv. Don't get me wrong, some courts on the ATP tour need to be sped up but nothing too dramatic please!!banbrotam wrote:For me the conditions were way too fast and although they are too slow now, I can understand why they were slowed downThe Special Juan wrote:I remember watching highlights of it on YouTube a few months ago.
