Culture Cup round 2: Best song never to reach UK top 5
The Culture Cup round 2.
First topic message reminder :
OK, after the roaring success of round one, here is the roundup.
Round 1 threw up a few surprises, not least seanmichaels claiming first place and Galted close behind in second. Not the section of the league that these two usually frequent. It was clearly incorrect because To Kill a Mockingbird is obviously superior to Lord of the Rings but there is nowt as queer as folk and the good people of 606v2 have spoken. They have also spoken enough to garner Niall Quinn's autobiography some votes and some points, despite the p*ss taking throughout.
Adam has made his usual solid start, taking third place which is one below where he will inevitably end up. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Union finished with a vote and some points. Remarkable.
Table after round 1;
seanmichaels (Lord of the Rings): 12
Galted (To Kill a Mockingbird): 10
Adam (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory): 8
Hero (Fantastic Mr Fox): 7
Dolphin Ziggler (Hitchikers Guide to the galaxy): 6
onlytreblewinners (Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde): 5
Azzy (Moby Dick): 5
compelling & rich (Storm of Swords): 4
The Boss (Niall Quinn's autobiography): 4
Jbeadlesbigrighthand (The Old Man and the Sea): 4
The Womble (A Kestral For A Knave): 3
Superflyweight (Trainspotting): 3
Julius (The Big Sleep): 2
Rowley (The Godfather): 2
Union (The Dogs of War): 2
TopHat (Rage): 2
ChequeredJersey (The Kindly Ones): 0
bhb (The Ragged Trousered Philantropists): 0
Question 3: What is the best film released since the turn of the century? Culture isn't limited to old sh*t so what is the best film released since the 1st January 2000. This should eliminate some people choosing old films that they haven't actually seen but come near the top of best film lists. It can be re-releases if you want, animated films, porn, whatever you think deserves a mention. Fo' shizzle.
Please PM me your answers and pick a couple of choices. As usual, if you don't get your first pick I will let you know.
Please see the poll for round 2. Please vote for your top 2 and remember, It is open for the whole forum to vote.
Thanks.

I just need TopHat's and JBeadle's picks for rd 3.
If you thought rd 2 had some good choices, rd 3 is really strong! There are about 6 or 7 that I would happily vote for so far.
For the first time ever, I would even consider Union's choice as truly excellent. Although his second nomination was shocking.

Should duck have an apostrophe?Rowley wrote:I don't mind at all Tina. I rarely pay attention to anything you say so it is, as always, water off a duck's back.
Re: The Culture Cup round 2.
I believe so, without it surely it would refer to multiple ducks. Am sure Union will clear it all up soon enough.

2 films I forgot to nominate, and possibly enjoyed more than my suggestion, were Man on Fire and Training Day. One of my favourite actors is Mr Denzil Washington.

Very true Sean, because Gervais has made some awful films and his work since has been very hit and miss it is all too easy to forget how great The Office was. The episodes with the training session and the quiz are just about perfect.

Re: The Culture Cup round 2.
Brent's comparison between his workplace and comic relief is always a highlight for me, Rowley.
"Jennifer calls herself the 'boss', but there should be no ego when you're pulling together to create something good. It's like comic relief. I'm out here, seeing the flies, the starvation, the devastation, whereas the so-called 'bosses' like Jennifer are up at head office, the TV studio. They're doing their bit, they're counting the money - good luck to 'em. But their hands are clean, whereas I'm here, in the office, with little starving kids."

As it so happens Julius, your nomination of the Big Sleep inspired me to re-read it. Now that's a great book. If the culture cup achieves nothing else, it may at least serve as a means of recommending great books/ films/ music.JuliusHMarx wrote:This sort of thing isn't uncommon in the brief history of 606v2 'cups'. One of my favourites is his star trek crufts comparison in the quiz Chris. Almost love about every minute of the trainign episode. When Gareth and Tim are trying to solve that puzzle.
Why has the farmer not got a wife
He's gay Gareth
Well he should not be allowed near animals then.

Gareth: My dad, for example, he's not as cosmopolitan or as educated as me and it can be embarrasing you know. He doesn't understand all the new trendy words - like he'll say "poofs" instead of "gays", "birds" instead of "women", "darkies" instead of "coloureds".

Not sure your film choice will score all that highly though. I know there are a few people on here that like it but the competition is ridiculously good for rd 3.
