Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
Many people have been talking about the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez breaking the PPV record set by Mayweather and De La Hoya in 2007.
In this day and age, I think its an impossible task. This is a super fight with super fights on the undercard, its probably the best card we have had in boxing in a long long time. The problem is that this fight will be 'made available by other means' on the internet and a lot of potential buyers might choose to watch it for free.
In 2007, that option wasn't available, therefore I don't believe that record will ever be broken. The interest in this fight is massive no doubt, but I don't believe the PPV records will reflect the actual interest in the fight.

i think that once countrires/continents such as China (who are starting too now) and Africa start to embrace tech and boxing itself, the record will go.
one real elite class chinese boxer against a marquee western name would smash that record (after all thats where the boxer revolution was held... boom boom)

It's already the record live gate, it's a bit tough to talk about PPV before it happens. I can't see it doing 2.45m, but a lot seem to think it may break 2m.
2.1m standard definition buys would break record PPV takings, or 1.8m in HD. Not sure what proportion of buys are normally HD.

Imagine what the PPV buys would have been for Mayweather Vs Paquaio had they fought each in 2009/10.

According to Forbes, 60-65% of viewers purchase the HD, so 1.9m should do it.

Off the scale, the BBC is reporting that it was 2.7m for De La Hoya vs Mayweather, I thought it was 2.4m

It might break the revenue generated though.

I agree about streaming. Internet speeds are so fast now with fibre optic broadband that you can stream a link and it is near enough perfect quality. Add to the fact you can easily connect your laptop to tv and you can watch on a big screen as wel.

As it has already been mentioned in the thread can I take the opportunity to remind everyone of the sites policy when it comes to streaming. Have no particular desire to spend the next couple of days removing threads and cleaning up the place. Can anyone who is not familiar with the policy can you please read the below. Has been posted and bumped frequently so ignorance is not an excuse.

I think boxnation should mention 606v2 more often during their boxing shows.Rowley wrote:As it has already been mentioned in the thread can I take the opportunity to remind everyone of the sites policy when it comes to streaming. Re: Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
you can purchase boxnation on your phone for £9.99 a month mate with no joining fee. Not along that, but you can then stream it through your xbox or tv (if you have DLNA) and watch it that way.
Or do it another way obviously, whichever is easier!
Are HBO/Showtime streaming this on their websites? Wouldn't mind listening to Malignaggi commentate as opposed to our crock of Poopie

This has nothing to do with trading online streaming sites, the topic is about breaking the PPV record.

Re: Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
Showtime are usually very vigalent when it comes to the big fights. Streams get locked down fast.
I wouldn't sleep well on Saturday night if I thought about the few million people who have stayed up all night frantically pinging pm's and emails about as they look at a blank video accompanied by a side bar of numpties complaining interspersed with extreme racist and homophobic retoric.

Re: Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
The other issue around breaking the PPV record is the economy is still pretty much in the toilet globally so folk do not have so much cash available for luxuries as watching a fight certainly is. Think this will do good money but cannot see it breaking records

If you want to do some good John you could pay for Boxnation on behalf of a tight fisted yorkshireman, fairly sure if someone else pays I have no broke my stance on the station and so can still maintain my faintly ridiculous protest.John Bloody Wayne wrote:Y'know like you can buy a goat for an African family in someone else's name for christmas? Re: Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
Manny vs rios will smash the 2.4m the Chinese fighter on the undercard had like 300million viewers in the Olympics so the ppv buy rate will be 10s of millions although it is only £5 ppv

Re: Breaking the PPV record, an impossible task?
It can probably break the record of highest earning, although not most buys
Thr former is the more impressive, and wth more HD buys than stnadard buys they should eclipse te $140mil but not the 2.4 mil buys
