Australian Open: Day Ten - 2014
First topic message reminder :
http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/schedule15.html
Day 9 somehow got lost , but Day 10 is ready to start.
Cibulkova would be an interesting winner, but she has a hard time closing matches (she is a class apart from the recent Djokovic antics).
Vika should have an easier time, but ARad is a tough cookie.
The Mens side has seen two "upsets" already, is there room for more?
Can Grigor (Baby Fed, to the French version) do the possible and upset Nadal the Iron Man?
Perhaps Federer (the elder) is the more capable between the two to cause an upset and beat Murray?
Fun day of Tennis awaits. Goodluck to all contestants today.

Good well 2 things.
Youve made your opinion clear JHM, lydian didnt agree with it
Lydian made his point, you didnt necessarily agree
So you guys dont agree with eachothers views... great... soo whats the problem? Who really gives a sh*t about hyperboles and strawmen and "excessive " language, its utterly ridiculous, soo just draw a line under it

Supporting a tennis player we've never met, for various tenuous reasons, is pretty ridiculous too, but we still do it

Doesnt mean you cant do it with perspective, which has clearly been lost here.

I am desensitised to oversensitive sensibilities if that makes sense? I am looking to see a serve and volley fest from Federberg and a rally spin fest from Nadtoni

Even now, 10 years on, with the rivalry long not what it used to be, nothing makes this forum go all warm and fuzzy like when these two guys meet.

Being a Roger fan, I will add - from our side of the barricade - to the jinxing that has been going on:
First, I am impressed how Rafa always ends up being the outsider. Roger has not beaten him in a slam since 2007, and we all know how the match will play out, yet somehow or other, even now, with Roger at 32 and #6 in the world, the talk is that he might quite possibly win it.
Second, even though I know all too well how this one will end, I will be waking up at 3am (or whatever time it will be in my neck of the woods) to watch and hope that the rerun of the movie I have seen too many times will have a different ending this time.

This could be really close this one. It's really on a knife edge which way it will go.
If you're really pushing me I'd say Rafa in 4, but it could just as easily be Rafa in 3. It's hard to call.

Missed the game today, but just saw the 20 minutes highlights. Very impressive win for Roger.
In my view, Roger to some extent "won" the head to head with Murray with the Wimbledon final victory which gave him an unassailable lead of 3-0 in slam finals.
I am a bit surprised to see Roger win today, as Murray looked to have the better of him last year and I expected Andy to win 70-80% of the matches from then on. It did go to 5 sets last year, but Murray was clearly the better player.
Roger is also 4-1 in all slam matches with Murray, and a notable win of past his best vs at his peak.

Re: Australian Open: Day Ten - 2014
Facts of the matter are thus. Rafa has blisters on his hand. Is it hampering him? I would say yes as I can never remember Rafa throwing in three double faults in one game in my life. Is it manageable? Yes it is as he can still win matches. To counter-balance things Roger's supporters will point to the age should things go against him so let's look at that. Is it hampering him? Not that I can see to come through in flying colours in a physical match lasting approaching three and a half hours but recovering from it may be an issue
So in short both have issues to affect them but at the end of the day the best player will win on the day - no excuses.

My point is he will not get a better chance to win another slam than now. He is, by all accounts, playing at a level consistently around a level of say two years ago, couple that with other factors such as Novak's exit, Rafa's blisters and having a potential final opponent he has an Indian sign over then that is why it is now or never if Roger has one more slam win in him.

Speak for yourself you guys are all worse than English football fans before a world cup, anyone expecting anything other than Rafa treating Federer like a fat lady at an all you can eat Vegas buffet destroying the shrimp cocktail bar then you are all delusional. Blisters shmisters. Unless Nadal gets a serious injury he is going to beat Federer in 3 or 4 sets. Next you guys are going to tell me England will beat Germany in a penalty shootout. Seriously, this is the most uninteresting and overrated non-rivalry in sports. At least since 09 on any outdoor court. Roger has won a couple of times indoors where Nadal is vulnerable. But despite Nadal's poor form the guy is just ruthless when he smells the finish line.

Put things into perspective HenmanBill. First up by all accounts Federer turned back the clock with this display so kind of negates your past his best claim and your claim it was a peak Murray is false. He came into this tournament with low expectations and one competitive match in four months so I fail to see how that equates as peak Murray. Roger deserved the win no doubt but think perspective eh.

Don't break my heart socal... One day, before I die, England will beat Germany in a penalty shoot out. I'm clinging onto that, and I won't let it go.

I finally finished watching the match last night. As a Murray fan I have no qualms him losing to Federer in that form. I thought Federer had his tactics spot on last night and rushed Murray at every opportunity. It was good to see Murray play aggressively and show incentive. It seems the new racquet is working for Federer. I bet he wished he had changed earlier. A very good match and masterclass in shot making from Federer.

I'll be rooting for you guys as the underdog, but after watching the Man U v. Sunderland shootout in the league cup where every English player missed their penalty shot I am not optimistic.

I was in disbelief. Even the Scots showed us up in that shootout. Deary me.
Danny, I wait in hope too, but I'm already 26 so I'm not convinced it's going to happen in my lifetime.

^ it was amazing. Possibly the lowest quality penalty shoutout ever.
This article feels relatively peaceful. Perhaps it can become the Switzerland of the forum, a neutral place where agnostics like me can avoid the war going on elsewhere.

Steven Fletcher is a Scot through parentage. However he was actually born in England. Maybe that explains his pathetic effort.

Ok JHM. I'm travelling at moment so can't post much. I haven't left either....never said I was going to per se, just a break...but I'll wait til after AO.JuliusHMarx wrote:All I first said was "If it's a massive impediment Rafa will lose. If he wins it clearly isn't a massive impediment." I honestly don't see anything wrong with that argument.
H-N comes back with " How so very predictable"
Seems like every word I utter also gets dissected to the nth degree and still no-one knows what she meant. I was happy to leave it at that, but the debate went on with a few other posters, so I went with it. I don't think he could've beaten Dimi with a massive, withdrawal-type impediment/'crater'. I think the use of those words is excessive and needless hyperbole - the same way the media hype everything up. That's just my view. I think he beat Dimi despite being hampered somewhat on his serve by a blister - that's all. The same way Fed beat Murray with Murray somewhat hampered by the legacy of his back trouble - not because Murray had a massive impediment.
Lydian, I've already specifically said that my views on 'some' Rafa fans are not directed at you. There are 'some' Fed fans who are equally ridiculous as those 'some' Rafa fans, if not more so.

Cheers Lydian.
I will publicly say that you are one of the posters I would most regret leaving, and I value your contributions to the forum highly.
We do disagree, but where we do I hope that you feel, as I do, that we don't cross any lines. If you feel I have done so, then please be assured that it certainly wasn't my intention.

I suppose it depends how you look at it, Murray is at his peak in a wider sense of these current years, and Federer is past his peak if you look at this performances over the last year, and winning about 1 slam per 2 years in recent years. Although in terms of current form or fitness Federer is nearer his peak. Murray was looking pretty tired in the match. So depends how you look at it as I say.

Hehe. Seriously speaking though, this is just about exactly how I see it. If I am to guess, I say Rafa in four, but will not be surprised at all if it ends up being straight sets, possibly easy straight sets, to Rafa. I cannot see anything else having much of a chance of happening. As I said though, that will not stop me from hoping for a Roger winHenman Bill wrote:This could be really close this one.
