Still, pro rugby is a harsh world and if he's not had a chance then that's tough!
Also worth remember we've signed this Nick Mclennan chap, who is a bit of a midget but can apparently play stand off, centre or wing. Not got much of a pedigree so not expecting much from him.
Yeah forgot about McLennan, don't really know much about him to be honest. Hopefully he is better than the recent kiwi 10s we have signed!

So just to get this straight, Glasgow have two international 10s and Edinburgh have none, so they are going to sign a SH 10 for Glasgow?

If Glasgow don't want Jackson I'd certainly take him at Edinburgh, no question.

I absolutely wouldn't. He's a known quantity and would just be yet another barrier to young players getting meaningful game time.
Are you coming from a Scotland point of view in that you would rather Jackson than some other NSQ journeyman coming in? In which case I can sort of see the point, however in my opinion while that might be beneficial from a Scotland view it wouldn't be from an Edinburgh view - we know what Jackson offers already and is he the man to help bring through our young Scottish 10s? I certainly don't think so. Sounds like I'm being overly harsh on Jackson, but I don't feel he is the man Edinburgh need

I’d take Jackson, but he wouldn’t be my preferred pick to be honest.
I’d much rather have Heathcote or Miller ahead of him, but if those two weren’t available then I’d take him.
Don’t think he would come to us though. I think if he left Glasgow it would be for a team outwith Scotland.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
I think I probably rate Jackson more highly than most on here. His range of passing is better than anything demonstrated at top flight level by any other SQ fly half currently playing the game, if we're looking to play a more open and expansive style of rugby, which seems to be the case, then I personally think Jackson is the fly half most suited to that game plan.
From an Edinburgh perspective we have three fly halves: Leonard, Bezzy and Francis. Two of those can't play for Scotland, and of those two, one of them can't play. Whoever Edinburgh sign is MUST be someone who is qualified to play for Scotland. I'm completely fine having Bezzy in the squad, he looks a class player, but if you offered me the choice to switch Francis for Jackson, I'd grab that gladly.
I've never seen Lee Millar play but I have seen a bit of Heathcote. Promising player, but I'm not convinced he's a better player than Jackson.
Still, I'd be happy with a new SQ option, and as long as Jackson finds regular rugby somewhere decent, I'd be happy to take Heathcote.
What cannot happen is (a) we decide to keep Francis and extend his contract, or (b) we replace him with someone called Jappe vyn Straussberg, who played 10 seconds of rugby for the Boks in the days of P Divvy, aged 29 on a 5 year deal, who turns out to have "journeyman" branded to everything he does on a rugby pitch.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
Surely Edinburgh's 10s next season will be Bezzy, FES' secret nephew Leonard and either Jackson or Heathcote? I'm being serious. It would indeed have to be an SQ. And isn't that what we talked about the teams needing earlier in the year - (a) a competitor for the Scotland shirt, (b) a good quality NSQ whom the players can learn from and (c) a young SQ who will look to (b) and (c) for training and nurturing?
If Glasgow can have (a) Robinson (b) Weir and (c) Russell, then wouldn't that be just grand?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
Given that Edinburgh are developing a more forward orientated, territory based game and Glasgow are signing lightweight speedy backs can we not have Weir and Glasgow keep Jackson?
I'm sure born and bread weegie Weir would be delighted with that...
It's a serious point though - Jackson's style of play (and I'm not just talking about the flaky inconsistency) doesn't suit the new Edinburgh.

The poor lad would be terrified. He'd have to learn to eat with a knife and fork, and how to speak English. It wouldn't be fair.

All I have heard is that one of the international current 10s at Glasgow is off and is being replaced by a Scottish Qualified 10 from the SH. No idea who the new 10 is supposed to be, with Weir there I would imagine that its a youngster.
If Jackson goes where would he realistically go and be 1st choice?

Problem is you'd be able to count using one finger how many matches young Finn Russell would get to play, and Robinson could quite easily overtake Weir in the pecking order.
We'd need to be careful that Robinson and Bezzy aren't the two first choice 10s next season. Whilst centres like Horne, Dunbar, Scott and Vernon may benefit, we do need to make sure that Weir, Russell and Leonard continue to get game time.
Still, I agree in principle with the model - having one SQ international, one experienced NSQ pro to cover (preferrably one who could ultimately qualify to play for Scotland) and one lightweight scamp for GC and ASBO to salivate over.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
I wouldn't bet on it being Robbie Robinson. His playing future is in doubt at the moment with a pretty serious hip problem. No timescale on how long he is out injured for but he was saying he doubts as if he will be able to play any super rugby this season.
Seems to be a case of it clears up and he starts to train then it appears again preventing him from even doing any running at all.
Would love Robinson to sign for one of the scottish sides but not sure it will happen at the moment.

Robinson is SQ immediately so I wouldn't give a proverbial wee if he overtook the Meatball provided that he did so on merit. That is of course the obvious difference between Robbie and the Bezmeister.

Now THAT sounds like someone the SRU would sign. But seriously, Robinson looked pretty good scoring the winning try for the Chiefs in last year's Super Rugby final and surely, after the farce of Atiga the Cookie Monster who clearly came carrying an injury, any signing would have to pass pretty stringent medicals.Majestic83 wrote:I wouldn't bet on it being Robbie Robinson. Hmmm, you'd think, but I'm not so sure. Don't think the Edinburgh medical staff went beyond checking Nikki Walkers weight and blood pressure (the weight thing was introduced after Atiga-gate), and Glasgow really didn't do much better when signing poor Rory "they made me play rugby when I had a note from the doctor" Lamont.
It's not just signing crocked players we do well at either. When players get injured on our watch, we really go to town. I mean Mike Cusack barely missed the better part of a decade coming back from injury. Not sure letting him heal naturally and the course of Reiki was the right option.

If heathcote wants international rugby then he needs to come to Edinburgh. With Hart and Sam H-C "expected" to take on the future 9 jersey for Scotland and with matt Scott the incumbent 12 then heathcote would gain greatly from playing between these guys.
Glasgow and Finn Russell will benefit from cusiter and potentially Horne furra linee and Dunbar if furra linee picks up where he left off before his injury

Two things.
I'd be very disappointed if Rosco didn't come back to Embra. He's a class above our current openside options (sorry Roddy). Why won't SJ play him?
Secondly I'm not sure Heathcote is the answer, may be, and I'd like to see him, but another year on his contract at Bath.

Contracts can be gotten out of.
I've got an eye on the World Cup and I'm sorry but rhubarb nor meatball look like they'll be capable of orchestrating Scotland against the better teams. I know duncy is new to the role (on a consistent basis) but he's not exactly setting the heather alight.

Give meatball time - he is gettig better with each game adn look how few caps he has. I suspect he will end up a very capable player like Craig Chalmers - but not mercurial like Townsend.

On a related note, the 'missing' Treviso game with Glasgow has now been rescheduled for 4 April, which gives us Scarlets at home on 22 March, Ospreys at home on 28 March, Treviso at home on 4 April and then Munster away on 12 April. Not bad - it slots in quite nicely.
Three home games in a row should also give us a chance to build some momentum. No guarantees we would beat the Scarlets at the moment. We should beat the Os, hopefully.

Worse - they've both signed long-term contract renewals
If we're going for terrible scenarios:
Scott Johnson has decided that part of his DoR role at the SRU should include coaching Edinburgh. Solomans and Omar have been sacked with Johnson and Humphries taking charge with immediate effect.

Do you mean financially or practically?
Scotland internationalist, well respected player that is very marketable - I suspect him and Denton will be some of the highest earners at the club now.
Put it this way it is probably very likely to have 5 zeros in it.
