Anyone know much about him?
Played mostly as a back row at School level and then gone straight to the 7s squad from school where he has mixed between playing in the forwards and backs.
This season he seems to have made the permanent switch to centre at 15s level playing there a couple times for the u20s.
Certainly sounds like a promising player but not really seen him play apart from on the 7s circuit.

I started playing rugby with chris when I was about 6, great player just held back by injuries and coaches wanting to play him in the back row !
Great open field runner who is quick, strong and can step. Solid tackler as well the only thing he will struggle with is probably his passing, good offloader but since he has played in the back row for years he does not have a great passing game.
We have always said he will make it to the top if his knees hold up and the coaches stop moving him from playing 7 one week to wing the next.
Ironically out of the 3 in that year at the edinburgh academy I would say the best player has not been signed up yet (alex glashan playing in the 7s) but It will be interesting to see how dean and farndale get on.

Cunning plan from Solomons. Infiltrate Glasgow with Edinburgh players, then come the 1872 replay, Cross will collapse every scrum and Lee Jones will throw a few intercepts. Operation Trojan Horse is on

Operation Trojan Horse has been operating successfully for some years now; De Luca has long belonged to Glasgow.GLove39 wrote:Cunning plan from Solomons. So who is covering Nel at tighthead for Edinburgh?
Don't Glasgow already have Welsh and Low?

Kalman is out injured as well. It would have left them quite exposed in a full on run in to the end of the season, one more injury and it could have been play offs over! They have a lot of games still to play.

Is this the SRU throwing all the eggs in the Glasgow basket, given Edinburgh have nothing to play for??
Why not take Scott and Du Preez as well (can't think of anyone else who'd get into the Glasgow team.....)??

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
At the end of the day, for whatever reason, Solomans has not been playing Cross anyway and has now confirmed that he is moving on at the end of the season. It probably suits him to get a few of the youngsters onto the bench and give them a bit of game time in preparation for next year. McQuillan is being brought up to the match day squad.
It is doing Glasgow a big favour though but is good for Scottish rugby to, Cross won't go on the summer tour under cooked and we will all benefit if Glasgow do well in the playoffs.
I agree though that all the recent moves/loans seem to have benefitted Glasgow.

The news about Big Mike kind of ruins the evenning for me. This is quite concerning too as they aren't giving more details, hope it isn't the shoulder again...
Cross crossing over is baffling, it'not like Edinburgh have strenght in depth at tightead. I find it quite criminal too that Dr Geoff wont get a proper send off as he is apparently off to London Irish at the end of the season

Agree. Should have played on Friday night as his last game. He's been a great servant to Edinburgh rugby.

They have said it is an 'illness' unrelated to his shoulder injury and is going to keep him out for the rest of the season. I know that does not exactly clear things up but I think if it had been the shoulder again then it would have been the end of his career, so I guess we should be thankful for that. He just needs to go away, get better, get a pre season in and hopefully be ready to play next season. He certainly has had a tough time.

Maybe they wanted to give him one more proper chance at winning an 1872 cup game.

Agree about the comments above about Cusack, really hope him all the best. He missed the game three weeks ago with illness so assuming its the same one and he is out for the season, it sounds serious.
Hopefully its something that time heals.

Looks like the kiwi tighthead is coming next month instead of next season, which will help.
Wonder if the saffer prop has arrived yet? He's the more promising one.

Had no idea about Propgate. I think that it goes without saying that if we're losing Big Mike for the rest of the season, I am absolutely delighted that we're getting the scrum doctor for a while. I certainly rate him and I don't understand why Grandpappy doesn't. Hopefully that means Welsh will get back to doing what he does best on the loosehead side to give Ryan Grant a break.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
This does suggest the SRU are throwing all their eggs in the Glasgow basket. You could say this is fair enough as Glasgow are the only team to stand a chance of winning something, but being brutally honest it looks like Glasgow are set for another away SF away to either Munster or Leinster, and this dramatically decreases their chance of winning.
On the other hand I see it as imperative that Edinburgh finish in the top 6 to guarantee European rugby for both teams. Now we are faced with Nel and a couple of young EDP tightheads who have had little to no gametime for Edinburgh.
If Nel gets injured do we get Cross back?
Glasgow have Grant, Shrek and Jerry at loosehead and Low and Welsh on the tighthead.
Edinburgh have Dickinson and Blaauw loosehead and Nel and Euan Mcquillan (who? ) on the tighthead now until the big New Zealander tighthead arrives next month and gets up to speed - something that probably won't happen until the end of the season.
Strange, strange decision.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
Agree with you RDW, but the conspiracy theorist in me wonders about the coach's motives. Cross, Laidlaw, Rennie, Jones and possibly Ford all moving suggests one of two things (or possibly both).
First, you have a new coach who believes that the current squad needs revolution not evolution. Either because he wants to change the existing culture at the club, so gets rid of the "old guard", or because he lacks the man management skills to get them to buy into his vision.
Second, he has had a look at the squad and decided to get rid of the players who simply aren't good enough. The fact that the five above are all Scottish internationals worries me slightly if that is the case.
If I was an MFL fan I would be preparing for a couple of lean seasons.
As a Scotland fan I'm more concerned about how one of our clubs can have become so uncompetitive that a fairly serious clearout is needed before things can start improving. Oh wait, the McNumpties at Murrayfield oversaw everything. Ah now I see it.

Saw it reported this morning that Angela Welsh beat Carlin Isles over 50m - a slight surprise, until I read that our favourite prop had a 40m head start and even then it was a photo finish!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread II
I really don't know pip, and I wish Edinburgh or the SRU would just be honest with the fans about why these guys are leaving. If they said something like:
"Although these players have been great servants for Edinburgh rugby, we have made the decision to not offer new contract so that a new generation of players can get more gametime to the benefit of Scottish rugby"
then I think the fans would be a lot more understanding.
To lose Laidlaw, Cross, Ford. Rennie and De Luca (last three not confirmed yet) in one go is a massive chunk of experienced, popular players at Edinburgh.

Once again communications at SRU HQ is appalling Have to say that I don't really understand the Cross move at all - I would have thought that he would be a key part of Edinbokke trying to capture 6th place, which is doable

The thing that annoys me is that they release very matter of fact news articles, and at no point acknowledge what the fans think about it.
I know I am often critical of the typical Edinburgh Facebook fan, but there were a lot of angry and disappointed people voicing their concerns over this and Edinburgh will probably pay no attention to it.

I'm afraid that it is symptomatic of the direction in which rugby is moving the world over - less regard for the fan, more regard for the TV companies and corporate sponsors - its the ugly side of professionalism, and it's only going to get worse imo

If Edinburgh are turning into the Scottish Sarries, then it's provided an even stronger case for a 3rd pro team. No point investing in youngsters and schools rugby if there's sweet fa to play in at the top.

I also saw that - a true but hilarious story, because the Glasgow squad all wanted to know how quick he really was.AsLongAsBut100ofUs wrote:Saw it reported this morning that Angela Welsh beat Carlin Isles over 50m - a slight surprise, until I read that our favourite prop had a 40m head start and even then it was a photo finish!
Was very close but Angela just won. And as Alex Dunbar said, they won't hear the end of it now from Welsh for the rest of the season.

I don't really know what to say about this.
Cross leaving is a disapointment, he's a great player and deserved a proper send off.
However, when taking into account the game time he has been getting under Solomans can we really be surprised?
I like to see Edinburgh do well but my passion for the team is lessening as of late.

Have faith Radge, my passion for the team has definitely increased this season now that we actually have a decent coach, players that actually look like they care, and new players like Du Preez and Ollie Atkins look to be really decent players. The style of rugby isn't the old Edinburgh way, but if it means we win once in a while I don't really care!
Even with all the players leaving, assuming that Ford stays (which is rumoured) then our starting XV is something like:
1 Dickinson
2 Ford
3 Nel
4 Gilchrist
5 Atkins
6 Du Preez
7 Grant
8 Denton
9 Hart
10 Tonks (asusming he sticks at 10)
11 Visser
12 Scott
13 De Luca / Fife
14 Fife / Farndale
15 Cuthbert
Which is a team to get excited about I think, especially after a full pre-season with Solomons and Omar. Also worth stating that 13 of that team are SQ, so not quite 'Edinbokke' yet!
Once this season is done and dusted and we have confirmation on who is leaving and who we are brining in, I am really going to have high expectations for Edinburgh coming into next season. Being Scottish though, we know we are probably likely to be disappointed!

If we lose Rennie and its becuase he isn't big enough I'll be very unhappy.
I'm not wanting Edinburgh to play a type of Warrenball where we ignore talented players and select purely on physicallity and ignore talent, skill and flair.
Rennie is one of the main players Edinburgh cannot do without IMO.
