Judging by what Big Reg was saying, Schaub will be our QB for 2014.
I'm actually a fan of the move too. It probably means we're looking at OT for the draft now, unless we want Bortles or someone to sit for a year behind Schaub.
I think we go QB in the mid rounds. Reggie was checking out Fales in San Diego recently, and he has ties to our coaching staff already. Could be the pick.

Not really sure what McKenzie is doing this offseason.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
It depends how you look at it. Best in context of the Raiders doesn't say much about the players walking.
Chicago overpaid Houston - his career high is 6 sacks and he's better as a run defender.
Veldheer was viewed as a right tackle so they didn't want to pay him (why they were going to pay Saffold I don't know...) and Penn actually had a better season pound for pound.
The players coming in aren't on huge deals and they bring experience that we need. This is a team that has to improve quickly next season so Reggie is trying to save his job by bringing in older heads that can do that. He doesn't have time for rookies to be learning because they'll get him the boot.
I think the plan ideally is get a better record in 2014, and then start using our full drafts to get younger talent for the long term. This isn't an easy franchise to fix so I'm glad they didn't go for flashy moves, just solid ones.

More likely to be teams trying to make it look like they'll pass on them, although with Bridgewater not impressing at his pro day it's possible.mikeygnfl wrote:I wonder if we will see some if the draft QBs drop? There's a few iffy parts for me there though. Reggie still gave a RT 30m, then paid more to replace Veldheer, with a guy who can't stay healthy, and is a better G than T when he is on the field.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
The Saffold thing was pretty bad, yeah. I guess they thought he was young and if he stayed healthy he could play LT, but I see us taking one in the draft now anyway. Either way it was good the deal got canned, but it made the franchise look bad. Then again, we probably can't look too much worse.
NYJ believes Howard was worth the deal he got if I recall so I'll bow to him on that. I guess we'll be running to that side a fair bit this year. He needs to earn that corn.

Howard is great. The biggest compliment I can give him is that I didn't question his ability once. D'Brickshaw Ferguson had times where he was dodgy but Howard was rock solid throughout. RT and LT doesn't matter anymore in today's NFL where you have players like Cameron Wake and Charles Johnson rushing from LDE. Therefore, $30m isn't outlandish at all.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
A 6th round pick for a QB with a ton of starting experience in the NFL, much of it a more than decent level.... what's not to like about that? Oakland won't win a Suoerbowl with him but that's hardly the yardstick by which this trade should be judged. This improves their roster immediately and that'll do them for now.
You should only blow a first round pick on a QB if you're convinced that he can be your guy. From what I'm reading, Reggie wouldn't be the only one that isn't convinced that any of this year's QBs can be their guy. There seems to be question marks on all of them. No Andrew Lucks or Peyton Mannings in this draft.
Oakland, as much as any other franchise, just need to steady the ship before they get too far ahead of themselves in thinking they can compete with the likes of Denver and even KC. Guys like Tuck and Schaub will give them great vet leadership.
This move made Oakland better.

Have just read that the Giants have signed 19 free agents in the last 2 weeks! 19!!!!!
I mean, I knew they had a lot of holes in their roster, but 19??? That must make the most active team in FA so far surely?

Giants have swapped places with the Jets. Signing anyone and everyone in hope that they can plug the many holes in huger roster. Somehow they've managed to get a decent secondary and a decimated front 7. OL is still awful too.

I dunno about the OL. Schwartz is pretty good, Beatty could rebound, Pugh played well. They'll add interior OL in the draft.
But yeah, that DL. At this point I do wonder whether JPPs 2011 was kinda a fluke and injuries have really limited him. Linval Joseph shouldn't have hit the open market. Kiwi should've been cut outright.
At least they didn't pay Tuck

Cleveland seem to have an odd strategy. Not turning up to pro days in a year when they have they're most critical draft in a while, would think they'd want every chance to evaluate players

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
So the Philadelphia Eagles have released Desean Jackson. The Raiders, Jets, 49ers and Seahawks have all been touted as possible landing spots. With concerns about possible gang involvement the Bay Area and New York maybe best avoided. Jackson to the Seahawks?
For the Eagles, I have seen Brandin Cooks as their type of player for the past few months and wouldn't be surprised, if they went WR in the 1st round, he'd be their pick.
If other news the Buffalo Bills are apparently in talks with the Texans over trading up for the no 1 draft pick. I can only think it will be for Johnny Manziel following his Pro Day yesterday. Just waiting for Jerry Jones to appear in south Texas.

I don't know? Just curious the rumours came after Johnny Manziel's Pro Day. Can't see they going after an OT or WR in Robinson or Warkins with Matthews and Evans availble. Could be for Khalil Mack out of Buffalo?GSC wrote:Why would the Bills trade up for a QB

Looks like the Niners need to get a CB in the draft. Chris Culliver's been arrested for felony hit-and-run and posession of brass knuckles (that he used to threaten a witness that tried to stop him driving away).

So.... DeSean Jackson is visiting the Redskins today. I have no doubt that he will continue this offseason's trend of players visiting Washington for a spot of sightseeing before leaving to sign for another city's NFL team.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the gangs issue without being sure of all the facts. The LAPD have said that he isn't in a gang which essentially leaves him as a guy who grew up in a tough neighbourhood and still has some shady associates. He won't be the only guy in the NFL that you can say that about. He's most likely one of the most high profile which is why it becomes news.
My worry about signing him would be the opportunity costs of doing so. What moves would we not be able to make down the line as a result of paying Jackson?

Considering the Skins don't have a round 1 pick this year I'd think it's a great chance to get a receiver considering they'll miss many of the best prospects in this years first round.
I think he'll go to us in Oakland though. He went to Cal, he contacted the Raiders when he was released to say he was interested, and Al Davis' ghost will haunt Reggie McKenzie until he signs him. He's an Al Davis kind of player.

If he'd just been released by the Bucs, or had sat behind a good starter last season, I'd probably agree. But someone already kicked the tyres and it wasn't pretty.

I agree. Had Josh Freeman have came into free agency from the Bucs then I think one of the teams may have gamble on him but to lose two startings jobs in one season is not good. I think the Vikings experience has put teams off him.Lowlandbrit wrote:If he'd just been released by the Bucs, or had sat behind a good starter last season, I'd probably agree.
